Video Game News and Miscellany

You could maybe chuck the Tau in with the Order faction. It might be a stretch though to justify the Imperium working with not one, but two races of Xenos scum.

Ah, who am I kidding anyway. If I were to play this game it'd be all Orks all the time for me. They don't need no stinking reason to fight! WAAAGH!!!

If the official website is correct, the Warhammer 40k MMO Dark Millennium Online will feature two factions, Order vs Destruction.

...How do you do that with fucking 40k? Nobody gets along! I'm guessing they'll have multiple Imperium bits somehow working with Eldar against Chaos who have tricked the Orks into working with them.

Lame. I have a feeling the development time on that one will be long enough to chuck it in the bin with Conan and the like. I stand by my anticipation of The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2 as the only forthcoming MMOs that are going to bother doing something different from Blizzard.
It worked in Dawn of War: Winter Assault. Basically, you have the factions nominally work together, but constantly trying to fuck each other over at the same time.

That was for a single brief campaign; it's quite a stretch to me to see them working together for the length of an MMO's varied missions.

I don't see why it has to be two. Even DAOC had three. Everyone's terrified of breaking from WoW anymore.

Having split factions in WoW is bad enough. Split factions are pointless. It completely alienates an entire half or more of a servers population from being able to group/raid/quest with. You can still easily have PVP without split factions. It's stupid concept and I wish people had learned about how well factions worked with the Everquest system.

I disagree, DaoC lived off its Realm system. There was alot of realm pride before they allowed cross servers to happen. However I would say you do not need factions in a pvp mmo.

You really call DaoC alive or a huge success?

Everquest was a huge success. Ultima Online was a huge success. Everything after those two until WoW had marginal and decent success. WoW would be 10x a better game (in my opinion) without the factions.

City of Heroes got along just fine with it's Hero and Villain division, and it's even better now that they've included ways to switch sides. Hell, it worked just fine before they decided to combine the two games into a single package! But then again, PvP has always been something that was just "there" and not a huge focus.

One of my highlights of my online gaming were nights where the DaoC had a huge player base and the Realm vs Realm combat.

Don't even blame DaoC's current pop on the faction system. It was primarily a PvP game, Everquest, WoW, and UO while have PVP elements were primariuly PvE games iirc that had pvp elements inthem.
Mordred and Andred, were non factioned(in Essence) PvP realms in DaoC and they shut one down pretty quickly and Mordered always had a releatively small population compared to Factioned realms.
Factions only really deter in PvE where factions don't play more then for RP sake as opposed to gameplay sake.

I'm fairly certain I've never bought anything off PSN with my current credit card number, luckily. Annoyed that I can't really do much with the system at the moment.

I can't wait to spend 100 bucks on a controller.
The Razer Hydra is going to be $140.... Oh, you were talking about the Nintendo rumors. Speaking of which, I still don't think the controllers with 6" displays are going to happen, but I would love to see such a system launch with the next LoZ: Four Swords Adventures as a showcase title. Even single player I enjoyed that game, and I'd love to get a chance to play multi-player someday. Sadly, that doesn't seem likely, but I'll enjoy dreaming.

Between my mouse pad, keyboard, headset and mouse, I spent over $450. I will say that there's no way Nintendo would ever move out of their main consumer's "comfortable" price zone, so I don't forsee anything in that insane price range for controllers.

Who'da thought they would release a 250 dollar handheld? Nintendo will probably Sony it eventually. Think they're in such a place that they could release anything and anyone will buy it for whatever price they want to sell it for. Then the cycle will begin anew.

Video games recognized as an art form by the NEA

I'm curious, would a game designer funded by a grant be considered indie? Up until pretty much all non-commercial games have gotten cred as indie titles. We don't call other grant funded artists indie, though, right?

New Team Fortress 2 Comic: Meet the Director
It's part of The Replay Update, Valve has added an in-game replay editor to TF2. They're also adding hats (duh!), achievements and there's a film making contest with 20 categories to win in.

I'm fairly certain they'll be debuting Meet the Medic after this is all said and done. They've already admitted to working on it before and it's pretty due.

GOG.com is teasing a new publisher that they'll be announcing during E3, one that will have 25 games to add to GOG's library. They list five major publishers that they don't have deals with yet: Microsoft, Lucas Arts, Electronic Arts, Square Enix and Take2.

Personally I'm hoping it's LucasArts. I want a copy of Grim Fandango that's easy to get running on Windows 7.

It's going to be Lucas Arts or Square Enix. People love Deus Ex and it'd be quite a cu to get it out there before Deus Ex 3 comes out.

Needed more slow-motion ass-shots....

Her fight style does look phenomenal to play with though.

Preview from Shacknews

Consider her something of a special guest star; providing a new experience for about 10% of the game.
Catwoman isn't just a re-skinned version of the playable Batman. She moves with a lighter and somewhat speedier touch, but doesn't pack quite as heavy a punch. Her whip swing allows her to get around somewhat like Batman's grappling gun, but the range is much shorter. She also has a "thief mode" not unlike Batman's detective mode except that it only highlights things she'd be interested in stealing, which makes Catwoman a little more challenging to play in situations. She does, though, have an equalizer in the ability to use her claws to climb the walls and crawl on the ceiling.

The new GOG publisher is EA? wut...

If I could get to GOG.com I'd try and figure out if any specific games were announced, but the site isn't responding.

EDIT: 25 games are going to be added, the first three/four are: Wing Commander: Privateer, Dungeon Keeper and Ultima Underworld 1+2.

EDIT2: After that comes: Crusader: No remorse, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Magic Carpet.

SMAC had better include Alien Crossfire. I'm buying it if it does, I've never played the expansion.

EDIT3: No System Shock. That really sucks.

Alien Crossfire is not included. *Bleh* I still have my SMAC disc, I won't be buying from GOG. It doesn't even come with a soundtrack, wallpapers or the novelization. Just the game and the manual.

EA, you suck!

That's actually pretty weak... they could have bundled all the stuff and done it properly... morons

I've still got my Alpha Centauri and Alien Crossfire discs and it looks like I'll be keeping them :)

I can see one way to redeem themselves, and that's by putting a new price option for GOG, a $3 expansion pack. Release SMAX, have it bundled with SMAC for $9.99 and let people who've already bought SMAC upgrade for $3.

If it's $6.99 for the expansion, screw them.

I'm amused that Final Fantasy XIV is still not out on the PS3, and the Amazon pre-order doesn't have a date yet. I wonder if Square is gonna have to abandon that part of the plan at this rate.
