Watched the All in the Family, Jeffersons live event. It was pretty good. But Woody Harrelson trying to do a Bronx accent was laughable. But Jamie Foxx delivered as George Jefferson.
 
Good Omens

Enjoyed it a lot. It's a very well done adaptation of the book. Tenant and Sheen are absolutely made for their roles.
 
Okay, has anyone else been watching Jeopardy? My wife and I watch Jeopardy every night. It's our routine. But for the last two months that routine has been SERIOUS because of James Holzhauer. If we missed it on the East coast broadcast, then 3 hours later we've been tuning in to the west coast broadcast. Cannot miss it.

I don't know if you genuinely don't know or if you're making fun of me for spelling his name wrong.

James Holzhauer is the guy who now has the 16 highest single day winnings on Jeopardy, 2nd most all time winnings and 2nd most games played. In 33 games, he amassed $2.4 million. It took Ken Jennings 74 games to hit $2.5million. James has quite possibly forever changed how Jeopardy is played with his strategy of starting at the bottom of the board and betting big on daily doubles. Even though almost every game was a runaway game for him, it was still extremely entertaining to watch.

And last night he got beat, just $50k shy of Jennings' all time winnings record (Holzhauer averaged over $70k a night in winnings, so that's insanely close), because finally another contestant caught on to his strategy and beat him to it.

The most compelling tv of the year so far.

I have some bad news about yesterday.
I'm well aware. Actually wrote about that, but somehow it didn't post? Like 2 paragraphs of text are gone.

We watched it as it aired, and we were in shock. Once Emma's wager was revealed we knew it was over for James. I'm still bummed out he didn't break Jennings' record.

Swamp Thing

The DC Universe shows are getting better. Titans had a rough start, but Doom Patrol was awesome from the first episode and Swamp Thing seems to be the same. It’s definitely horror, which I’m usually not into, but I love Swamp Thing! I love that they did the costume as a practical effect, because it looks amazing (from what we’ve seen of it so far). Madame Xanadu and Blue Devil will also be on the show. I’d like Matt Ryan’s Constantine to find his way over to the swamp, too. I know it’s a long shot, but DC Universe would be a much better home for Constantine than CW.

Because he was winning way more per day? For awhile his daily average was higher than the previous single day record.
Statistically, at 33 games he was neck and neck with Jennings. A few stats give Holzhauer a light edge, a few give Jennings a slight edge:

But James had more than double the money Ken had at that point.

He didn't make it halfway to his number of wins, yet he set 16 new all time highest daily winnings records and nearly matched Jennings total winnings. Plus, even if he didn't make it halfway to number of wins, 33 games is still the most we've seen since Jennings and is good for second place. Asking why people were enthralled by him is like asking why people like watching Sidney Crosby when he hasn't beat Wayne Gretzky's records.

Rewatched Firefly.

This show has *not* aged well. While some episodes are still great, Mal's regular shots at Inara for being a Companion are a lot less comfortable to listen to than I remember them being & the final episode with the bounty hunter basically threatening Kaylee into behaving by threatening to rape her, then threatening Simon into helping him by...threatening to rape Kaylee. The whole thing is just...:puke:

I get that, but two things: suggesting that it is not exciting because he didn't break the record implies that it is not exciting to see any competition until after the fact. Is it more exciting to see Usain Bolt broke his own time record, or is it more exciting to watch him do it? I know my answer.

What's more, Holzhauer is number 1. The is more than one record to set with Jeopardy and Holzhauer is number one in highest daily winnings He's also 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15, and 16.

To suggest THAT isn't exciting is foolish. He AVERAGED nearly as much as the previous record.

Exciting to watch. Inarguably.

Emma, who finally toppled him, has been great so far too. She is playing a game somewhere in between Jennings and Holzhauer- starting at the bottom but finishing a category instead of hunting daily doubles, and betting more conservatively than James.

My comment was actually intended as a bit of explanation (and pastiche) for why people always seem to care more about #1 than #2, and also to give Dave a bit of crap for what essentially amounted to stereotypically saying, “What? He did not beat Jennings’ record? BOOOORIIIING!”

Apparently an accounting error somewhere meant the $40 million in subsidies from North Carolina became more like $14 million. Ouch.

I'm glad I didn't get the chance to sign up yet, because I love Swamp Thing and that's what wouldn't brought me in. I would've watched Doom Patrol, but that would've been "okay, I have this."

I've also been hearing some rumors that Warner is looking at creating their own streaming service. Wouldn't surprise me if they were to shut down DC Universe and just move the content over to a broader Warner streaming thing.
 
From various articles (still mostly rumors at this point), it seems the major problem was “creative differences”, which had already caused the series to be cut from 13 to 10 episodes. Apparently they were able to rework the last episode to give it a proper ending, so there’s that?

I really hope this doesn’t doom DC Universe. I think the shows are much better than CWs (I like the CW shows, but they’re definitely formulaic and “safe”, whereas Doom Patrol was able to turn it up to 11). Plus the subscription has already paid for itself this year compared to what I’d have spent in Comixology. I doubt a WB streaming service would have the comics.

This happened in Detroit too; city offered film incentives, production companies came in and started filming there, essentially starting a new industry. Administration changed, production companies moved out and the industry collapsed.

I wouldn't be surprised if Georgia is next.

I've been watching Hilda on Netflix. It's super charming, and I'm looking forward to finishing the season. I love the characters, and the world is fascinating.

Help me out artists of Halforums, is there a term for the type of color palette used? I'm absolutely adoring how it's primarily muted shades of orange, red, and brown, with a specific shade of grey-blue tossed in. Take this shot from the libary, for instance:


It reminds me of something I've seen before, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Medieval wood prints? WAIT? Is that it? From my memory of art history, these colors are historically the cheap and easier to produce pigments. Well, maybe not the blue, I'm not sure how hard that muted shade of blue is to get, but no bright colors, lots of shades of iron oxides, no purple to speak of. Huh, I wonder if that's the intention.

There are exceptions to that color palette. Ghosts have a vivid green glow, there's a librarian who has purple hair, and a brighter yellow gets used during night scenes for the light coming out of windows, but bright colors are used very sparingly. I love it so much.

I know about the tax thing, but my point is, why should I, as a customer, trust the service is worth getting? The 26 million dollar difference is a lot of money, but auto-dumping upon being told that screams "this service was supposed to be an easy quick cash grab, not a sustained business venture." Netflix didn't begin where it is; it built its way there. They're spending way beyond what they could be seeing in subscriber numbers. If they don't want to see if they can get more subscriber numbers, make more money, that doesn't seem like they're in this for the long haul.

Actually, this is exactly like WB with the movies. They didn't want to establish the groundwork for a cinematic universe; they just wanted to jump to Avengers-level success right off the bat.

What it reminds me of most is the Southwestern United States.
Sandstone, siltstone, feldspar, and chert, the layers of the Grand Canyon, mud and sand, but with the occasional bit of turquoise and/or malachite thrown in.

I'd just go with muted earth tones, but there might be something more specific that I can't think of.
