Comic Book News

Not really news, but this is an interesting aside i came across while looking for some stuff:

Age of Apocalypse (Event)
Though it may appear the other way around, this event was actually inspired by the script for One Man's Worth. While the comic event launched in February of 1995, with the episode not airing until September of that year, the lead time required for the cartoon's development and animation, as well as the ongoing collaboration of creative teams prior to the episodes' inception indicates the "universally-altering effects of a time traveler killing off Professor X" was an idea that had its roots on the X-Men: The Animated Series before being adapted to comics.

Eisner Awards starting soon. I'm going to be asleep before it gets too far along, but I'm really hoping Hawkeye gets a win. That was my #1 comic for 2017.

Well THAT wasn't happening! Monstress devoured every category it was nominated for, except for one where it split the vote with Tom King's Batman. Monstress is excellent and deserves the heaps of praise and now accolades.

Really DC? REALLY?

Black Label comics. Frank Miller gets top listing. "Radically reimagined characters... Uncensored. No Limits."

With the kind of comics this is, it makes sense for Frank Miller to get top listing. Well, maybe that's not fair. Greg Rucka is doing an out of continuity Wonder Woman book and I doubt that'll be like whatever Frank Miller is doing.

What's really confusing to me is that Geoff Johns's Three Jokers story is part of Black Label. I guess they realized there was no way to make sense of that bombshell from Rebirth in continuity, so it's just going to be a neat side idea here. Which I probably won't read? With the way they're planning these minis, it seems like they might as well have just jumped to make them OGNs like they're doing for the young adult DC Ink and DC Zoom imprints.

Okay I WILL give that the benefit of the doubt...but what is with all the SUPER DARKNESS lately?! Its like they're all "Oh people hate Grimdark do they? Well let's give them AAAAAAAAAAAAAALL the Grimdark!"

There's no telling if it'll be successful or not. I think it's more about having a prestige line. You could do a super gorey grimdark book of cursing and drugs and misery, but that's not the intent. There's just no restrictions because each book is its own continuity.

So what we get out of it will depend entirely on the sensibilities of the creative team. I wouldn't assume each book is a grimdark hellscape until we see so.

There was talk about rebranding some books under the Black Label with future printing. Batman White Knight for sure will be Black Label when the trade comes out, and I believe there was talks of older books like All-star Superman and Kingdom Come getting the badge.

I heard that, too. I'm surprised with a book like Kingdom Come since it's from longer ago than the others, but it's a good way to distinguish the variety of the imprint.

Also I need to find out when Batman White Knight is being collected because it sounds fantastic.

You're a day late on this, my fellow Mothercanucker.

(Maybe we have too many of the same threads. We could merge them and do like Comics News & Miscellany or something.)

https://www.halforums.com/threads/random-comic-book-crap.32284/page-8#post-1406744
I think we had that before, but yes, we have

Comic News
Comic Random
Comic Bitching
Comic Recent Reading

The problem is that each of those threads is so large now that I'm not sure we could effectively merge them without confusion. But Comic Bitching could be done in the Random thread if it has to do with industry stuff or the Reading thread if it has to do with stuff you're reading. Likewise, Random feels different enough from News, much like in the Video Games subforum. Then again, people use Comic News to post about what they're currently reading, too :p. It's kind of a mess.

Uncanny X-Men returning as weekly series co-written by Ed Brisson, Kelly Thompson, and Matthew Rosenberg.

This will be the only Kelly Thompson book I trade wait on because I just can't afford that, but I know she and Rosenberg are writers I like, so I'll certainly read once the trades begin.
