[PC Game] Hearthstone (Practically Beta)

I've unlocked most of the beginner decks so far. I'm trying to decide which one to focus on now. I'm torn between paladin, Hunter, and shaman. Paladin seems easiest so far, so I may focus on that first.

So, who wants to pay $10 so one of their hero portraits can look different?

Coming soon: Magni Bronzebeard

It's a purely cosmetic option for the Warrior class. New portrait, new animation for the hero power, new emotes. Plus a card back you can use with any deck.
Blizzard has a long history of overpricing stuff like this. $9.99 for a portrait is too damn much. That's a whole new hero with new abilities and gameplay in Heroes of the Storm.

I also don't like that it comes animated. Let it be static, like all others, and animate once you've earned the gold portrait for that class, just like all the others.

See, Axe Flinger doesn't suck. All you need for an OTK is an 8 card combo, and for Emperor Thaurissan to stay alive for two turns when you have those cards in hand!

Blizzard announced a new play mode, but relative few details about it.

Tavern Brawl

So far it sounds like mutations from Left 4 Dead 2. So far the bullet list seems to be:
  • New set of rules each week, with a couple days off in between.
  • Must have a level 20 hero to unlock
  • You can Brawl with strangers or with friends
  • Arrives mid-June
  • Free admission, at least to begin with.
  • Your first win each week will get you a card pack, at least to begin with.
So, this could eventually cost money. They haven't been very forthcoming on what the rules will be, but some possibilities are:
- Preset decks
- Crafting decks based on specific rules
- Buffs for certain minion types

I'm kinda puzzled as to why they need to have a break in between weeks, especially a "couple of days". Is this just an attempt to get people to play more on weekdays?

Also announced, you'll be able to assign card backs to specific decks.

Hahaha, this is hilarious:

Also, Tavern Brawl is out, if anyone hasn't realized that yet. It's Ragnaros vs Nefarian, and it's pretty cool, but not well balanced. Everyone seems to agree that Nefarian is OP by a significant amount. It's possible to win as Rag, but it's hard.

Looks like this week's Banana Brawl isn't going to be one that I enjoy. Comments are pretty much saying that this benefits aggressive decks, especially Mage, Hunter, and Zoo.

Nice to see the format encouraging the underplayed classes...

I mean it kinda does and kinda doesn't. If you play a lot of minions you can end up getting milled which of course will burn your Dr. Boom or Savage Roar (why you have me RNGsus?) so I could see the benefit of playing something more controlling and just filling their hand with bananas that they can't really do anything with.

echoing ooze MVP though. two 4/5s for 4 mana feels good.

Right now filling a mage's hand with bananas is very dangerous. They're most likely to be holding on to Sorcerer's Apprentice and Flamewaker, which leads to a hand dump and machine-gun like spray of fireballs.

The first time I heard of the new tavern brawl, I immediately thought mage with those same cards. Also an emperor thaurissan and antonidas

So I tried the brawl tonight.
I chose Shaman (because Windfury is fun with cheap boosters).
I faced 4 Paladins in a row before I got my win.
Then I played Mage to finish out my 19/20 quest and drew another Paladin.
That's 5 different Paladins in a row as my only opponents. What is it with today and Paladins?

This week's Brawl: Spiders Everywhere!

Choose a class and you'll get a deck full of Webspinners, along with some random class spells.

Bwahahaha! This should be hilarious.

It was still "not ready" when I last checked.
Looking forward to it when I get home. Lately I've been getting more packs from brawls than anything else (I think this is their goal, actually).

I was right, this is fantastic. My first game was a win when I used King Crush + Coin + Reincarnate = 16 damage burst. That, combined with what I had on board, took my opponent from 24 down to zero in a single turn.

My second game was a disaster, I got 2 Angry Chickens, 1 Captains Parrot, 1 Young Dragonhawk, 1 Webspinner, 1 Timber Wolf, and I couldn't even play my Gahz'rilla when I got him, because my opponent had already played a Maexxna.

Third game was much more interesting. My opponent Mind Controlled my 24/8 Gahz'rilla, but I managed to kill it with my 8/5 Scavenging Hyena. Then I used a Tundra Rhino and a series of heavy hitters to beat him down.

This Brawl is hilarious fun. eSports! I don't know that I'm going to play any other game mode this week.

Tip for the Webspinner Brawl: mulligan for spells. It's going to be a rare game where you don't have enough Webspinners in your hand, don't bother keeping a hand full of them. Try for a useful spell. Even if it's Flamestrike or something else late game.

Getting really tired of opponents who only play Priest (trying for that mass silence).
Another tip: If played right, Scavenging Hyena is almost a guaranteed win, especially if you get the charging rhino to go with it.

This was fun.

Both of us got pretty much nothing but webspinners and played nothing but webspinners and faced each other every turn.
As I suspected, he started trading webspinners on the next turn in order to fill his hand, but I thought it was worth screenshotting.
I did win the game, but only because I was smart enough never to go shadowform in order to preserve my ability to heal myself.

Winning the battle also gave me 40 gold for the Priest victory, which meant I was finally able to unlock the last level of Naxxramas.

This week's brawl is pretty crazy. The Great Summoner Competition: every time you cast a spell, it summons a creature of the same mana cost.

I have a feeling my aggro Paladin deck isn't going to work for very long, I'm sure much better tuned decks will arrive shortly. I have no idea what will eventually shake out, but I think Druid may end up being very powerful.

When I heard about the spells, I immediately thought of Druid. I've played all spell druids before, they're fun.
