Movie News & Miscellany

Really? Huh. Curious to what stereotypes they'll embody and whether or not they'll fall into the "it's women so DRAMA instead of light hearted comedy" and, if not, how much backlash there'll be over stereotyping of women and whatnot, considering the men in the original were walking stereotypes as well.

I'm really hoping none of that happens and they just make it a good comedy that doesn't rely on that kind of stupid shit.

... but I fear you're on the mark.

They were? Aside from the token black guy, I don't see that. They weren't particularly deep characters, but I don't think they were stereotypes, either.

Really... Egon wasn't a less obnoxious Sheldon Cooper? Ray wasn't the naive, ivory tower collegiate professor forced into blue collar work? Venkman wasn't a complete huckster, getting through life on lies? Winston wasn't the only sane man in a group of maniacs?

They were all pretty heavily stereotyped, almost to the point that they are codifiers for their tropes.

Okay, that's kind of ironic, because Ray out and tells Venkman, "You've never been outside the University. I've worked in the private sector. They expect results."

Of course, it's also kind of ironic that Egon tells Janice "Print is dead" in the first movie, and in the second he owns / operates an occult bookstore.

Exactly: Ray did private sector work and the experience was so out of his comfort zone that he immediately retreated back to the safety of college because FUCK THAT NOISE. Venkman never left academics just because it was easy and he could get all the tail he wanted.

I know we're talking fictional characters, but I can tell you from personal experience, the private sector is sooooooooo much easier than academia. Anyone who says "those who can't, teach" hasn't been a professor before. In the private sector, I do my allocated job as a scientist. In academia, I do everyone's job from CEO to janitor, all while teaching on the side. The only people in a university not under pressure for results are tenured big wigs with nothing to lose. The last grant I had expected quarterly presentations and at least monthly written reports. The money could easily be withdrawn without progress.

You need to remember that Ghostbusters was written from a blue collar, anti-establishment, ultimate free market perspective. To Joe The Plumber, college professors live cushy lives with easy jobs because they don't have to work long, hard hours everyday doing stuff that a lot of people look down on. They can just hand their classes to TAs and then spend the rest of their time pretending to do research in the magically world of College, far away from the real concerns of the everyman.

Really, Ghostbusters reads like an Tea Party comedy.

- The villains are the government that are trying to hold a small business to any standard... despite the fact that it was Egon who built the containment grid without any safety features or any plans for what would happen if it got shut down accidentally or purposefully. To quote Epic Rap Battles "Walter Peck was right, that's some shady shit."

- This doesn't extend to the police, fire fighters, ambulance workers, etc... they immediately side with the Ghostbusters over the government, despite the fact that is was their fault the world almost ended.

- The Ghostbusters seem to operate under the assumption that any damage they do is irrelevant to their ability to do their job. Unlicensed nuclear powered particle accelerators are perfectly fine things to tote around, even with the possibility of total protonic reversal leveling a building or worse.

I don't remember ever feeling that Peck was wrong, just that he wasn't listening to the whole story.

(and that either way, he was a douche)

Yeah. He did have some valid points, but shutting down a containment grid operating on principles you don't know or understand, containing proven malignant entities in large numbers? Completely stupid. Venkman egging him on was equally unnecessary, too, and made it into a personal matter instead of a reasonable one.

Valid points: Egon admitted the power grid was barely sufficient for operations. What if there was an outage? The proton packs were nuclear accelerators - some of those sparks were almost certainly high-energy particles, just being scattered all over the five boroughs. What about shielding, cooling, and recharging? Not to mention the whole "crossing the streams can cause the universe as we know it to explode instantly" thing. The traps, loaded with ghosts, were shown to produce steaming clouds of noxious vapors - was the containment system filled with explosive gases? How was it vented?

You also have to remember, at the time, the EPA was one bureacracy that the audience would have at least heard of and had a negative association with - a lot of late 70's and early 80's performance cars were castrated by new emissions standards (ie the Iron Duke Camaro, which was incredibly gutless with only 84 bhp).

Oh look, trolling for the sake of trolling.
Being called a bitch has nothing to do with being female, but with the verb "to bitch". That is, to complain about matters excessively, as a bitch, that is, a female dog, is wont to do. Being called a baby is not ageist, it is a shortened form of "crybaby", here shortened to allow the humorous assertion of your being a "bigger baby" than an elephant calf. A crybaby being an insult referring to someone who cries loudly and more than necessary over a small and/or only perceived hardship, as babies are wont to do.

Seriously, even you know full well this is neither ageism nor misogyny. Don't go undercutting your own, sometimes valid, points once more by going to exaggerated lengths to play the victim or turn an insult against someone else. It's hardly any better than "nuh-huh, I am rubber you are glue".

fucking hell, Ghostbusters is one of my favorite movies ever and "It's true sir, this man has no dick" is probably the funniest line in the movie
Then why bother even bringing it up if you thought it was funny?

Oh right. Because it's you. Because you can't have a normal conversation without being faux offended by something for the sake of shits and giggles.

ugggguuuuuuuuuuuu I almost never joke about myself since it just... anyways.

People were talking about the EPA Peck guy, joking about defending him, then I jump in making him more of a martyr for getting attacked by Venkman's cruel joke

I guess y'all say it's crying wolf, or whatever to that, and maybe it is, but I'm just trying to say I was more slightly joking about applying 2015 standards to a 30 year old movie more than actually getting offended by a 30 year old movie.

none of the above really makes sense, but I'm gonna post it anyways

If it had come from anyone else, it probably would've been funny.

Since it's your usual M.O. to post this sort of shit 99% of the time, you'll forgive me if I just assumed it was business as usual.

Well, what Nick said, but kinder :p. It's hard to differentiate between satire and real indignation; you fall afoul of Poe's Law on one side easily when you're often seen as the other side.

Of all the Jurassic Park 4 script treatments that seemed likely, the old Raptor SWAT Team from years back was the one I thought least likely.

This is gonna be dumb, but I can't wait to see this movie.
