What game(s) have you bought the most times?

I think most of us have bought games multiple time, either to have them on different systems, get remastered versions, or just because we lost an old copy. What games do you own the most copies of, or have otherwise paid for over and over?

I think my top game is probably Final Fantasy 2/4. I originally played it at my friend's house (and missed big chunks of the plot when he played it without me), then later rented the game to play it myself, and eventually bought a used copy when I realized I liked it more than FF6. I would go on to buy the GBA version and the DS remake, and I'm a little tempted by the Pixel Perfect remaster (especially since learning there's a randomizer made for it.)

Psychonauts may be second on my list. I originally played it via GameTap (anyone else remember GameTap? It was like a much shittier version of Gamepass. No recent games on it. Everything was encrypted, including your saved games, so no mods or stuff like transferring games from Baldur's Gate 1 to 2. But it was a fair amount of value if you got the half-price subscription of $60 a year. It was also the only way to get a digital download of Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, legally, for a number of years.) Then I went on to buy Psychonauts on GOG, then as part of a Humble Bundle so I could have the Steam version, then I gifted at least one copy of the game.

Honorable mentions go to:
  • Planescape: Torment (4-CD version when it came out, GOG version of the original, Steam copy of the Enhanced Edition, and Prime Gaming*)
  • Curse of Monkey Island (CD and GOG, but also Prime Gaming*)
  • Grim Fandango (original on CD, remaster on Steam and GOG*, plus the soundtrack)
*Copy not directly paid for, either part of a subscription, claimed via GOG-connect, or part of a bundle.)

I own at least 3 copies of Stardew Valley. (PC, Switch, mobile)

Persona 3 FES on the PS3, Persona 3 Portable on both Vita and PC, Persona 3 Reload on PC

Persona 4 on Playstation, Golden on both Vita and PC

I'm thinking the Batman: Arkham games. Bought Asylum and City on PS3. Then bought them again on PC (during a wicked sale). I stupidly pre-ordered Arkham Knight on PC, refunded it during that debacle, bought it again on sale after hearing it was fixed. Then bought the whole series again on a good sale on the Playstation online store.

I don't think I dipped often with adventure games, for as much as I played them. Most of the copies I owned were pirated, until I bought CD-Rom collections much later on, then again on GoG.

I double-dipped on Civilization IV and Ghost Master, after owing CD-Rom editions first.

So yeah, some double dips of physical copies to GoG, but I don't think I triple dipped like the Arkham games.

On a related note, I find I'm double dipping a bit with digital purchases on my PS5. There are games I could easily play on PC, but I'm finding I'm more comfortable gaming on the couch via the PS5. They're games I already on on Steam, too.

In my defense, I'm never paying full price. It's always on a good discount. Like the indie game Downwell. Or the Dead Rising games. Or the aforementioned Arkham games. There's other games on my Playstation wishlist that I already own in Steam, like Hades, Stardew Valley, or Plague Tale Innocence.

And I feel guilty for double dipping when I could easily just play them on Steam. But again, there's something to be said for the comfort of couch gaming over a computer chair.

HoMM 3 is definitely up there, having owned discs, CDs, Steam and Gog.
Diablo 2 got re-bought so I could multi-player with my brother, and again when the CDs wore out, and again digitally.
KOTOR2 I own on CDs, on Gog, on Steam, and a version legally owned© with the restoration mod.
Pretty sure it has to be between those three.

I really don't buy games multiple times because I lose interest in replaying them after a bit. If it's just the same linear game and there's no branching plot or multiple endings, then it's hard for it to hold my attention for multiple play-throughs. The only exceptions to this have been Diablo 2, which I still have my original CD copy for, and last time I played it, I installed from those then patched it to not need the CD to run, AND the original Knights of the Old Republic. Speaking of which...

KOTOR - bought it when it first came out and I still have my original xbox version plus a working xbox to play it on, but then I went and bought it on Steam, too, just for the ease of playing it again. My xbox is still in a box since the move and I don't foresee myself pulling it out again for a while, if ever. Jade Empire and SoulCalibur 2 will have to sit and wait for a future time when I get antsy enough to do that and go through the trouble of setting it all up again.

If we're counting board games then, to my shame, Monopoly. My family had a copy when I was growing up which I think is at my parent's house still. When I started my board game hobby, I bought it because even though it is universally agreed to be bad, it is one of the few games that most people know and can be a gateway game. Then we got Futurama Monopoly because my spouse just had to have it. I don't think we've ever even opened it other than to look at the pieces.

Hmm, now that I think about it, I think my maximum may be two. I bought the PC version of Fallout 3 once on physical media when it first came out, but later on after I got New Vegas and wanted to play Tale of Two Wastelands, I bought Fallout 3 again on Steam.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake, PS4 and PS5
(It's save to say I have bought different Final Fantasy games on different plattforms multiple times.)

Steins;Gate (OG and Elite) Steam, PS4 and Switch
(I also bought other visual novels multiple times on different plattforms, always during a sale).

I split it with my Dad once, then moved out and bought my own copy for n64. Then bought the GameCube bundle with it. Then grabbed it for Wii. And finally bought it for 3ds. If they released an HD remaster for switch I'd buy it again.

So total 4.5 times plus I rented it for like 6 weeks before my dad and I bought it.

I've probably payed for it 5.5 times over but only owned 4.5 copies.

If i had to guess, it's probably Heroes of Might and Magic III.

HD version on Steam, once on GoG, and as part of the Ubisoft bundle where they had all the game up to V.

Also, if we're counting all buying i also bought a ripped CD from the local market back in the day for like 5$. Man, i forgot they use to actually have stalls for pirated CD's... i actually saved money to get all 5 Final Fantasy 8 ones (saw the cinematic trailer on the CD that came with one of teh local gaming mags). Fun times...
