Movie News & Miscellany

I'm just waiting for someone to finally do a U.S. release of Takashi Miike's adaptation of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It was released in Japan back in 2012 and all reports I've read have said that it's a really good film. Not just good in comparison to the usual quality of video game-based movies, but a legitimately good film.

Honestly, my saying that was outdated at this point. We have animated movies coming out based on Persona 3, Sly Cooper, a couple others--they're animated movies, but they're still adaptations from video games, and they don't have to struggle with their source material the way almost every live-action adaptation has done.

In related news, the Warcraft movie has finished filming. The people behind it sound like they want to make this an artistic war film. That's pretty high ambition, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes kind of just did that between apes and humans, so who's to say a serious war drama can't be done between humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, orcs, trolls, cow-people, zombies, blood elves, aliens, werewolves, goblins, and pandas?

I'm a little happier now that Lucy took #1 at the box office over this. I may actually see Lucy, in fact. Reviews have been pretty good for it.

Who'da thunk Brett Ratner directing a Hercules movie could go wrong?

It sounds really fucking bad. Also, that link is like 99% spoilers.
From your link:
Because while this is a film ostensibly about Hercules, it lacks the mythology, the monsters, the gods, the amazing feats — any of the details that make Hercules unique and interesting.

This sounds so much like my pet peeve about Troy.
Not only did it (for me) lack the big scope and really did not feel like a 10 year siege, why leave out the greek gods? WHY! Hell, even the 1980's Clash of Titans was better than Troy (once again, my own humble opinion,

Honestly I just feel bad for The Rock. He did an AMA on reddit this week and seemed really excited about the movie, and apparently had to work stupid hard to be even more ripped for the part.

I can't get over the "humans only use 10% of their brain, what if we used all of it!?" bit. It's such a horrible inaccuracy and writer crutch.
Especially since research seems to suggest that the better you get at something, the less of your brain you use.[DOUBLEPOST=1406397260,1406397113][/DOUBLEPOST]

If nothing else, the movie can be a 1hr40min commercial promoting Dwayne Johnson's availability for some other, better movie.

Consider it his promotion, then, for when he does a DC Comics film. He's been heavily teasing that he'll be in one, with it being pretty obvious that he'll be Shazam.

I've posted my thoughts on Hercules and Lucy over in the "Last Movie You Saw" thread. Check there for more full thoughts on them, but here's the basic summation on them:

Hercules: Not bad, just sort of meh, but really not the Hercules film they were selling in the trailers.

Lucy: A piece of shit that is pretentious and rooted in bad science.

Two things here.

Holy shit Frank Miller you're like 58, what the fuck is going on?

Holy shit Rodriguez shut the fuck up for a second and let Miller answer the questions obviously directed at him.

Two movies will be getting one-week theatrical re-releases. Ghostbusters will be returning to theaters for one week starting on August 29th, while Forrest Gump will go to IMAX for one week starting on September 5th.

not the biggest fan of Frank Miller but geez, he looks terrible compared to the last picture i saw. I'm sorry but he looks like the little guy from "The Island of Doctor Moreau".

Psst, guys.

Look at the posted date of that article.

Also, if you actually read the article, it's written like something out of MAD. That's not a compliment.

When Disney was originally thinking of doing a Gargoyles movie a few years back, they were like "No, it's not going to be about the TV show. Not even going to be like it. Leave us alone." I guess their tune changed when something like Guardians of the Galaxy is a smash hit.
