EA Needs to F*** off and die

YOU MAKE NO SENSE.
You called Dead Space a PC shooter, it's not. It's a PC Action Third Person Shooter that benefits from a controller way better than a mouse/keyboard. It's also a fantastic port with no issues that runs better than it does on a console.

Actually, I called it a shooter on PC (which it is), then I called it a third person shooter (which it is). Sorry, I didn't use it's full genre title Action third person horror shooter that benefits from gamepad and who's creators decided that having the mouse emulate the stick of a gamepad was the right choice.

In my very personal subjective opinion, any game that was originally designed for a console just plain plays better with a controller. The design of the game is built from the ground up with that type of control scheme in mind. I personally don't think that console porters need to be concerned with shoehorning in a control scheme that doesn't fit with the original design of their game. The fact that some companies do is a concession that they make for gamers who aren't prepared to treat their PCs as a beefier console(which I do).

My apologies then, I guess I shouldn't comment on something I fanboy over, I tend to get a bit over zealous.

I don't own any game consoles, nor do I own a single controller. The last non-keyboard/mouse/trackball input device I owned was a joystick - of the "MS Flight Simulator" type.
I have used so-called "controllers" maybe 5 times in my life, and my hands are too big to be comfortable, adn my muscle memory is all wrong. It's uncomfortable to me, counterintuitive, and unpleasant. I cramp up after 10 minutes of play. If and when I do have to play something on a console, it better be with some sort of novelty controller so I at least have a chance. Either way, if it's at all possible, I'll play K&M. I don't see how someone else deciding for me what sort of control scheme I'm supposed to think is "superior" or "better" or "the only one worth using" is in any way good for me.
Either give me GOOD K&M support, or allow the midding community to add it in ('cause SCREW YOU WE'VE GOT MODS), or don't try to bring it to the pc. Console fans, like Apple fans, may like the ease of use and security and such of having one enforced control scheme. I do not. Any game where reviews say they "absolutely" need to be played with a controller either won't get played, or speak volumes to the reviewer's bias and prejudice.

Sounds like a personal problem. :p

Like I said, if a game is built from the ground up for a controller, then it's not for you. I, for one, have reached a point where my PC is an all in one entertainment system. It is my TV, my DVD player, my video game console, my computer, and my radio. Personally, that's what I've always wanted out of my PC.

For the record, there's nothing inherently superior about either a controller or a keyboard and mouse, it's all a matter of personal preference.

If you insist on living in this pre-cross platform world, you're going to be left behind, plain and simple. The truth of the matter is that traditional PC gaming and console gaming are beginning to merge on a level that you traditionalists are not comfortable with, which is your own hangup.

The truth is the matter is far simpler.

The accuracy of the mouse is far superior to what can be done with thumbsticks... and it's extremely frustrating to have to use kludgy thumbsticks on games when I could be using a mouse.

All I can say is, have fun not playing the bulk of games that will be coming out in the future. The people who are insistent on a mouse and keyboard are dwindling and developers are going to feel less and less of a push to cater to them as time wears on.

So yes, Jay is correct if you deem using controllers as the "death of PC gaming".

It's not just shitty ports with bad controls, it's not just worse graphics (and really they're starting to do higher quality textures for PC versions, so there's that), it's that game designs have to be dumbed down to console specs so that 8 year out of date hardware doesn't gag. So today we're still playing games on Unreal Engine 3, with all the lovely texture pop-in and other headaches that come with that, because the game also has to run on a box with a half-gig of ram and a 10 megabyte graphics card. And we wonder why everything got crammed into a hallway.

Really, how hard is it to put proper mouse support into a game and map the keys to the button equivalents? It's just shocking how badly this is done in some games (and how flawless it can be done in good ones).

I hate controllers/gamepads for everything except flying and driving which is where I feel they excel.

Also, you're never going to see mouse and keyboard disappear unless real time strategies and the like also disappear. Ever try being competitive at any real time strategy with a controller?

As I said multiple times, what I'm talking about has nothing to do with PC games developed for the PC. I'm talking about cross platform games.

IE, 90% of the video game industry. 99% if you don't count indie titles.
He's the one who mentioned RTS games, not me.[DOUBLEPOST=1376953766,1376953592][/DOUBLEPOST]I guess time will tell if I'm right, or if there will be some sort of keyboard and mouse revolution, but I'm pretty sure you're going to find that I'm right in the future.

Much as I'd like to champion them, It's quite apparent the RTS genre is barely gasping. There has maybe been one good one every third year or so on average, and not even all that many bad ones to raise the total, compared with FPS/RPG/MMO/ETC games.

Think about that for a sec - there's more MMO games than RTS games. I can name all the good RTS games from the last 5 years on one hand and have fingers left over. Hint - Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War Dark Crusade expansion were both in 2006, Supreme Commander barely makes the cut in 2007... after that... what... Company of Heroes 2, which came out this year? I haven't been able to play it yet, dunno if it is actually good.

So, I'm assuming that you hated Starcraft 2 then?

If so, the competitive RTS community would like to have a word with you.

Well, I wasn't particularly impressed by it (and even less enthused by the prospect of being to basically pay 180 bucks for the whole game, released over the next howevermany years). But I will say it wasn't awful... not Command and Conquer 4 awful anyway.

Still, that brings the total to 3.

I know, it sucks. RTS games are one of my absolute favorite genres, but it's about as dead as the Adventure Game genre at this point.

RTSs turned into MOBAs, which are by a gigantic margin, the most popular games on Earth.

I fuckin' hate MOBAs.

I think RTS is stagnating because no one is quite sure where to innovate the genre. You can make it prettier without much of a problem, but once you start to alter the game mechanics you start getting something that isn't an RTS anymore. Is DoW2 an RTS, despite it's lack of focus on base design and resource collection? Is Starcraft 2 a GOOD RTS, despite it's focus on micromanagement as the only path to victory?

Basically, what has happened is RTS is shifting into MOBA as a genre, leaving the old mechanics and the focus on strategy behind in favor of fast action and instance gratification. Sadly, I don't give a flying fuck about DOTA2 or LoL so the genre is basically dead to me right now.[DOUBLEPOST=1376954459,1376954417][/DOUBLEPOST]

Adventure games are making a comeback though... they just aren't the AAA titles they used to be.

Yyyyyyeah, I dunno about that analogy. The control scheme is similar, but really that's where the similarity ends. That, and the only reason they're so popular is because they're free to play. I don't think they'd have caught on so much otherwise, and I think if they actually cost money their playerbase would dry up (see Demigod, which IMO was a better MOBA than LOL gameplaywise).

I'm still sad that Demigod never got it's due.

What I meant was that MOBAs were born from their RTS parent (literally in the case of DOTA) and took a huge portion of the playerbase with them.

DoW2 was more of a tactics game than a strategy game.
Heck, I thought even CoH was a bit too micromanagey even, though it wasn't as bad as DoW2. Still, when did soldiers have to radio back to base to decide when to use grenades?[DOUBLEPOST=1376954880,1376954743][/DOUBLEPOST]

I still say that RTSes, and MOBAs too, for that matter, would be made so much more interesting and strategic if your APM were capped. IE, you get to issue no more than one command per 3 seconds.

That'd show all those Mountain-Dew-mainlining sugar fiend preteen korean coke-fiends what strategy really is.
