Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, a fan mod for Freespace 2 10 years in the making with the blessing EA/Chris Roberts is set to release in a week.
It features 55 missions, 11,000 lines of dialog from 70 cinematics with 60 voice "actors".
I cannot tell you how excited I am to just learn of and be so close to the release of this. Wing Commander ruled.
Oh yeah, it's completely free.

So yeah, this is a fan-made game that's been ten years in the making. I'd honestly not even heard about it until today. But it's coming out this week, on the 22nd.
To say I'm stoked would be an understatement. I used to love the old Wing Commander games.

Oh man I can't wait to get this. I remember the one that had Mark Hamill and Biff!
I don't want to bag on this game too much because it was obviously a fucking herculean effort of a small group of people who obviously have a ridiculous amount of passion for the Wing Commander series but the cinematics come off very amateurish. The voice work is Resident Evil bad and the character models are 15 years old trashy.
Now, on the other hand the flying is honestly pretty God damn good. It captures the feel of the old Wing Commander games quite nicely. I was expecting it to be more Freespacey with Wing Commander trappings and while it does feel undeniably like Freespace they've done a fantastic job. I've only done one mission but I will definitely be returning to trash me some cats.
If you have any fondness for Wing Commander, give it a shot but make sure you have a flight stick. I can't imagine this shit without one.
It's not the lowest priced set (though definitely not the highest), but I use it for everything from Microsoft Flight to IL-2 Sturmovik (the best WW2 flight sim by a thousand miles).
