He was 70 years old and battling multiple myeloma. If you're not familiar with his name, you probably know his work, like The California Raisins and The Noid:

I never realized that his studio became Laika, or the terrible way they kicked him out.

Nooooooo!

Rats.

The Great Cognito was probably THE thing that first got me interested in animation festivals and the like. It's rather dated now, the same way that certain Warner Bros cartoons would be considered "dated."
I'm positive I still have my VHS copy of Martin the Cobbler (from 1977!) here on one of my media shelves. Hard to believe the same person would be responsible for both. Well ok, not that hard.

CLAYMATION CHRISTMAS.

That is a yearly staple in my family’s holiday traditions. My brother and I have been quoting it since we were kids. We had it taped on a VHS and had every second memorized, including the commercials that got taped. This man has played a HUGE part of my childhood. I love claymation work because of him.

I still have the VHS of that one, too. The one without commercials.
“Hey, everyone! Let’s wassail!”
