So, I'm sure a few of you are more or less artistic, but I've been looking for a new hobby to pick up in 2013 and I think I want to pick up painting.
Any resources or books I should pick up? Any advice?

Look and see if their are any painting studios in your area that have classes. It's kind of amazing what you can pump out in those classes. My 6 year old looked like the best artist ever.

Also, if you're just starting out, prolly want to go with acrylic paints. Cheaper than oil, they work more or less the same, except they dry out much quicker (which is both good and bad). Plus, you don't have to deal with paint thinner for clean-up.

Seconded. Oils are more complicated and take much longer to dry, so start with some beginner level paints. I recommend Liquitex. Also, get some gesso to prime the canvas for your acrylics.
Depending on what you want to do, Sharpie makes a line of water-based poster paint markers, which could be useful if you're more into graphic or graffiti style art.
Hit book stores and youtube first. Then if you want/need lessons spend the money. If you like it, it will be worth the cash.

If you wanna start on the cheap, many art stores will have starter sets with small tubes of RYBWB acrylic paint, a couple brushes and 2-3 small canvasses that you can fuck around with.

Heck, I've seen starter kits - paints, brushes, book, and canvas for $20 at Costco a few times.
