A while back I was auditioning for a role as a money specialist for the credit union system and part of that required me to submit a video about myself showing some personality and a little bit of my background. I was shortlisted but eventually lost to this guy
Anyways, during our late night Halchat, someone asked what I did and I replied it was really boring and didn't want to talk about it. In lieu of telling you live, I present to you, my introductory audition video.

A couple of pictures from last week. It's finally summer here in my neck of the woods, and we decided to give archery a go. What with having the bows and all... I'm paying for it this week, with joint and muscle pains. Hopefully those will pass soon so we can have another go...
Testing out some new arrows... It's a bit of a hassle, trying to find the right balance of length and weight so the arrow flies straight without wobbling. Also learned that modern arrows and traditional bows don't mix; the sturdy wood just rips off the fletchings.
Dad testing a bow of his own making...
...and mom trying a lighter bow, also one of dad's make. He's gone nut with handicrafts ever since he retired.
Still need to work on my stance... but getting there.

Awesome North_Ranger! Glad you were up to some archering! Hope you feel good enough to get that next round in soon. Your Dad made some nice bows! A friend makes English longbows, he is threatening to get my kids set up with properly sized bows. We've a tradition we call redneck holidays where on occasions like Easter my daughters will end up out in my parents' yard in their pretty Easter dresses with bows and guns in their hands. Dad's barn is starting to show the wear, seems a bit perforated. Yeah, we need new arrows too.

North_Ranger, Good to see that you kept the beard. Because man, I must have gotten some crappy Chemo-Meds. All of my hair fell out... all of it. everywhere

Thanks. And unless there's some stringest weapons laws in your neck of the woods, getting into archery shouldn't be that hard. Or that expensive, either. Getting an Olympic level composite bow or a bow fit for hunting... I know nothing about those things, I just shoot at a target. Which last time was a Gladiator poster someone had slapped on. I gave Russell Crowe a broken clavicle, an arrow through his cheekbone, a punctured lunge, internal bleeding from the liver and took out his left arm. But I digress...
Basically all you need to get started are:
- A bow
- Arrows
- Targets
- A place to shoot
Quivers, finger- and arm guards... those are toppings on the cake, really. Go as you like. We did some shopping around, and for $200, $250 tops you should get all you need if you just want a decent trad bow, a dozen or so arrows and targets. Try sporting goods or hunting stores, they oughta at least get you going in the right direction. Then all you just need to find is a quiet, open place to start shooting. We tried looking into actual archery ranges, but the places here... well, they're mostly for composite bow users, and trad bows aren't really that welcome.
Besides all this, all you gotta do is figure out how strong a bow you want. Mine's pretty light, with a tensile strength of about 40-45 pounds. The basic approach is that you get a bow that when drawn feels like juuuust a little bit a challenge; that way when you keep practising and build up strength, it will feel right and natural when you nock an arrow.

And do get your kids involved, this is hella lot of fun. I had mine made by a friend of a friend who's a real archery enthusiast, whether that means Stone Age, trad or longbow. Man's even hunted with his own gear.That's all new growth, actually... I started getting my hair back somewhere in February and March, and just let it grow back. Though to be honest, I know what you mean by "all of it". I was smooth as a seal after the first six months of chemo. The new treatment I'm currently undergoing isn't so rough on the hair. I do shed some, but I still got a decent short hair and, as you can see, a bushy red beard.
