The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

I have found a great babysitter! My kids love her. And today, because I have a dependable babysitter and no other pressing appointments or monetary commitments, I FINALLY GET TO GO SEE THE AVENGERS!! *does the Snoopy Happy Dance*

I am pretty relieved. I was a lot more annoyed about the alien thing than I ever thought I would be or should be. But come one.. WTF!?

Had a great father's day today. Church, lunch with friends just back from a vacation trip (same couple we're going to Walt Disney World with this fall) and then a round of golf at a local course. My daughter and wife got me a 1tb seagate portable drive to back up the 20k+ pictures that are currently on my hard drive. Currently eating some leftover chicken fried rice from PF Chang's to end the day.

I got a starbucks card for father's day. If you knew how much fade likes coffee, you'd understand how this is an Epic Win.

Who said anything about being a snob about it? I've just found a lot better coffee from several other roasters. I couldn't care less about all the "shade grown, fair trade, organic, blah blah blah" coffee bullshit. I drink coffee that I think tastes good. I don't think that Starbucks tastes good. I am sorry that fade has to settle for what I consider to be bad tasting coffee.

Edit: But I'm right there with you about there being plenty of worse places.

I like Starbucks. I particularly enjoy their Verona roast (which the stores seem to prepare a lot more rarely these days). They do have some bad roasts. I avoid the Christmas blend like the plague, and I don't care for most of their dark roasts. But their mediums are pretty good, and I like the way they brew it in the mornings (with slightly pressurized water). I know a lot of people don't like the result of this brew because it's heavy like coffee from a french press. But to each their own.

That's my point. That's snobbish, just in reverse. If a dude likes Starbucks, let him like Starbucks.

Like, I like coffee, and I don't give a crap where it comes from. Except for Second Cup coffee, which I find gross. But I have a few friends who enjoy it, and I don't look at them and say "Man, I feel sorry for your enjoyment of Second Cup."

Saying you like something doesn't have to mean you think your opinion is the only correct one on the matter.

When it comes to the actual point of fair trade? No, it certainly isn't. When it comes to people lording their self-entitled sense of self-worth over me because I don't always ensure that my coffee is fair trade? Yes... yet it is.

Sorry, I realize I'm probably taking it too seriously, and normally that kind of joking around is something I relish and have defended on several occassions about the forum. It's reminiscent, for example, of our ongoing debate about beans in chili.
But in this particular instance, fade was talking about a gift he received for fathers' Day, and with genuine excitement, and it seemed like you kind of just swooped in and shat on it. And that just bothered me a bit.

Sigh... you are all correct of course. I'm sorry if I ruined your enjoyment of your father's day gift. I am a horrible person for opining that there could be a better coffee than your brand. Please carry on in your collective knowledge that I am a horrible person for posting on the internet.

Another date tonight with OKC Girl. Getting cheap domestic pints and burgers late at night after I'm finished work and she's finished pub trivia.

For those keeping track, that means she'll probably have a two drink headstart on me. :)

Woohoo! I get a raise this year, of about 16%, and the all-staff meeting that we have this week isn't "we suck, you're all fired," it's "look how awesome we are, these are the awards we've received this year."

And now that I'm no longer dreading the rest of this week, I can clarify that a) I have no problem with people liking Starbucks. At the end of the day, coffee is just an efficient method of caffeine transfer for me. Unless it's the weekend, then I care about the taste, and even then, I do like Starbucks' french roast, I just prefer a good Kona blend. b) No, I don't begrudge people who actually care about fair-trade coffee being important. I agree that it's a worthy cause. c) No, I didn't perceive that anyone here, on Halforums was being judgmental toward my coffee drinking choice or my self-worth because I don't always do my best to insure that my coffee is fair-trade; I was commenting about the actual physical people that I frequently run into on the streets of the greater Seattle-Tacoma metroplex, i.e. Coffee-Hipster-Mecca-Jr. (Second only, regionally, to Portland). d) By all means, if you like Starbucks, get on out there and enjoy your Starbucks. After all, while I can't quantify exactly what effect Starbucks has had on my life, I'm sure it would be poorer if Starbucks didn't exist; being that I regularly have to commute through their HQ's city an' all. And let's face it, there are plenty of places in this country where Starbucks is the best coffee available.

My point was never meant to be, oh man fade, your life must really suck if you're stuck having Starbucks as your "good" coffee; it was meant to be a) a joke and b) well... a bit of a snide joke.
