It's a free, website-based word game. One word per day. You have 6 chances to guess a 5-letter word. If a letter is grey in a guess, then it's not part of the word at all. If it's yellow, then it's in the word, but not in that spot. If it's green, it's part of the word and in the correct spot.

Just a tip guys - it looks like it pastes successfully here, but it won't. You have to paste it and then take a screenshot of your attempt to paste, then delete everything and paste the (cropped) screenshot.

If you're on windows 10, Shift-Winkey-S will open a handy screen capture utility to do this for you.

1642490262712.png

I open a notepad after the first two lines if it isn't obvious what it is by then.

And I lay out the possibilities

R O _ _ _
_ R O _ _
R _ O _ _
etc

and I see what words I can build with the letters I haven't used yet. Rowdy jumped right out at me from the first line, and that meant that neither R nor O could be in the first position.

so the grid became

_ R O _ Y
_ _ O R Y
_ R _ O Y

Because R could only be in the second and fifth position, and O could only be in the 4th and 5th. With S, I, E, C, T, A, L, W, and D out of the picture, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if U fit somewhere in there, but nothing I came up with was possible without one of the greyed out letters. The X threw me off because, as its scrabble score indicates, it is very uncommonly used.
But after screwing around in notepad for 5 minutes at that point, it became clear the best shot was PROXY. And it was.

What kinda mind meld are @GasBandit and @figmentPez in with those first two guesses??
As explained in the short video I linked above, those two words comprise the 10 most common letters in English. (For dictionary words, which is more useful in word games than the most commonly used letters in print. Though it's not adjusted specifically for 5 letter words, so I don't know if more optimization is possible.)

#34

Huh, Bert's train made me go check - I didn't realize Wordle WILL use words that repeat the same letter (like "latte" or "rigor"). I had thought it was one use each per word. That complicates things and I've been lucky so far it hasn't happened to me.

Mine was the usual. The combination of letters that were included and excluded pointed me HARD to "Robot" but my brain was all "Surely you wouldn't get a word that reuses TWO letters *immediately* after discussing how reused letters are possible! There's gotta be something else!" so I flailed and scrounged for a while, then thought "well maybe I can think of some other word that uses R, O, T, and B to check for B and 3 other common letters" but eventually I gave up and shot my shot and turns out...

Yes, I'm ahead time zone wise. That's... That's what the spoiler tag is for? My 217 was like three posts earlier. And I usually don't know what number any one is, as you can see from the very screen shot I put in spoilers, the end screen on my phone does not list the number.

I've been using "siren" and "octal" a lot lately, which hasn't honestly been as handy as I thought it would be. My go-to starter word used to be "super," and I might start going back to that as my default.

With this one, I was trying to eliminate as many possibilities without reusing too many words. Or at least eliminate as many vowels as possible. As you can see, it really didn't help. I wound up relying on WordHippo, scanning through "5 letter words containing "ach" (in any combination) and eventually fell upon "whack."

The thing about SALET is that if you don't get greens and yellows, it means you have to make your second word out of R I O C N to get the other 5 of the top 10.

I had to use a scrabble word finder to figure out if there's any word that uses that. Apparently ORCIN is a valid word in scrabble, but I'm not sure I want to spend the turn finding out if it's on the Wordle word list.

Terrible word; also because I tend to forget words like that can be used in English since they are considered adjectives. In my mind it's only the past tense of the verb, which wouldn't be a valid word for Scrabble/boggle/wordle in Dutch.

As far as Wordle gods go... There are rare cases where a 2-line solution is due to skill, but in the vast majority of cases, one or two line guesses are more luck than skill - or pure luck.

There’s a site that has wordle already and you can do several words not just one a day. And you can raise or lower the number of letters. I never mentioned it because half of the popularity of wordle was it was only one word a day and everyone shares that word. It’s a shared experience that made it popular.

Yeah, there's a lot of ways Wordle's set up made it unique. I LIKED that it was only one a day because it made the while thing communal. There are tons of imitators popping up, but I doubt I'll be interested.

#172

Bubble181

Bubble181

Yeah, it wasn't exactly a new concept - Lingo has existed for literal decades.
It's the "one a day, share/compete" nature of it that made it interesting. No doubt I can download a dozen knockoffs - some perhaps with better UI and all that than the original - and do a thousand a day, but why would I?

For some reason, my mind went straight to shar- but would not move past shark, sharp and shart (all of which were impossible). I went through the whole alphabet and didn't see another word, went on to things like scarf, spark, scare, scary, smart (all of which can't be made). Guess you didn't watch much James Bond as a kid?
No. They were too violent and had too little clothing on the women.
Did I mention my mother (as well as her 4 sisters) used to be a nun?
Well, postulants, at least.

I used to use the share button, then take a snip of what it pastes, then replace it. In the preview it does show up correctly, or at least used to.

It's the type of word where the self-imposed "'have to use already guessed letters" will really bite you in the ass. Using, say, HOTEL would've told you which of those it could be in one line.

I've been using the snip tool to take a grab of the pasted blocks. If you try to post the reply as formatted it doesn't work, but take a screen grab of it and then delete it and paste the screen grab and post that.

The Hyrule currency was named after the Indian currency, which has its word roots going back into ancient times.

Which really raises the question, is it technically an english word?

I got hooked on Redactle recently. It takes a Wikipedia article and redacts virtually all the words, and you have to guess words until you discover what the title of the article is. For example, two days ago it was Southeast Asia. Yesterday it was differential geometry, which took me a long time to get.

I got today's in exactly 60. I spent about 50-ish floundering around, but then hit some words that quickly made it apparent.

By my 20th guess, it seemed pretty obvious that it was government related, and I teased out "human rights" pretty quickly, but for some reason didn't think to search "protests" until nearly 30 guesses later. Once I got that, it all started falling into place.

Generally, I try to look through the text to see if any phrases stand out. Usually, that's a fail, because how many phrases can you make with connecting words and participles? But in this case, "over-and-under" jumped out at me, and I could only think of one word associated with the phrase. And it was used 4 times in the text. So I went for it. Being Texan hath its privileges.
