Please suggest anime, and where to buy it on DVD

So, my anime collection on my Plex server could use some love. I have a few more popular things--Attack on Titan, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing (and Ultimate), Inuyasha, Keijo, One Punch Man, Parasyte, Avatar, Legend of Korra.

I'd like to pull all of that stuff and put it in its own Anime category, rather than lumping it in the TV Shows tab. But if I'm going to do that, I'd like to expand the collection dramatically.

To that end, I would welcome suggestions on what to get, and where I might buy it. I have no interest in downloading stuff--I've never put a downloaded video on my sever, and I'm not gonna start now. At the risk of sounding pervy and gross, I'm especially interested in tentacle stuff like La Blue Girl, but I'm by no means limiting my interest to that.

I fucking adored Cyberpunk 2077 but it's a Netflix thing so I literally doubt there will be a physical release.

Redline is literally the best looking anime movie ever made and the plot is violent even more insane F-Zero.

Amazon product

Here, it's 10 bucks.

If '90s era tentacle hentai is something you like, you got to get Urotsukidoji.

As for other anime, hang on I have a list. But I'm on my phone right now, it'll take me a second

How do you feel about gore?

--Patrick
I don't mind it so much. I have Parasyte, which is pretty gory. And Attack on Titan and the Hellsings..and Akira had some as well (though I didn't list it in my anime, because I was only looking in the tv shows section). I guess I should list the movies I have as well:
  • Akira
  • Castle in the Sky
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Howl's Moving Castle
  • Kiki's Delivery Service
  • My Neighbor Totoro
  • Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
  • Origin: Spirits of the Past
  • Princess Mononoke
  • Spirited Away
  • Vampire Hunter D (and Bloodlust)

I'll have more to say when I'm not at work.
Yeah, this is what I was running into when I was trying to find some of the old stuff I'd rented from Blockbuster and Hollywood Video back in the day

Went digging in some boxes and found my old stash of '90s hentai VHS. I seem to have lost the box for Urotsukidoji 1 but it's that black space in the middle. The three-part volume on the right is Urotsukidoji 4: Inferno Road

Also found something considerably older...

I don't know that I know enough to say. Looking at my 'already owned' list (which has no real hentai to speak of) shows what kinds of things I've liked in the past.
I mean, anime comes in every genre like anything else. Really more a question of what kinds of shows and movies you like to consume.

yup..stopped at the big W to get garlic bread for my spaghetti tonight, and had to pass through the electronics section, so I looked at all of their movies. Got the complete series of Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex and The Ancient Magus Bride. They had others as well..a whole half-aisle devoted to them, but some of them were the well known stuff I already have, some of them were stuff I'd heard of, but weren't recommended (Evangelion) and a lot of them weren't complete sets, so I passed them up.

Evangelion is one of those things that everyone has seen, but no one really talks about other than to meme on Gainax for being bad at endings.

There is likely more I could add or even i have forgotten(WHAT A SHOCK!) but I have been working for almost a month straight so my mind, she is not so good, at the moment.
also other than the obvious reasons you might expect, my "TO WATCH" pile is a bit crazy at the moment due to untimely promotion to department head last year at work.

I already did. ;)

yeah and I almost fell off a ladder when the alert came in.....

and selling super over priced "ULTIMATE EDITIONS" to suckers like me.

I havent taken a new collection picture since before covid but here is one from 2019 to put in perspective my insanity in collecting physical anime.

Oh my.

Well, be sure to let us know which ones you end up liking!
The "watch count" isn't accurate, because I had to rebuild my Plex server and refresh all the metadata when I upgraded the drives.
So far I've watched:
---- TV Shows ----
  • Attack on Titan: Got bored about halfway through
  • All of Avatar: I liked it through the run, though there were slowish bits.
  • All of FullMetal Alchemist: Which I liked a lot
  • Ghost in the Shell (TV show, not the movie), I liked.
  • The Hellsings, all the way through, and while there were slow bits, I enjoyed them overall.
  • Legend of Korra, only a few episodes and I couldn't get into it at the time.
  • Inuyasha, grew bored after it started feeling very Dragonball Z-ish in it's repetitiveness.
  • One-Punch Man: Was totally awesome. I've watched the whole series 3 times now.
  • Parasyte: Interesting take on the whole body horror genre, and I liked it.
  • Shinobi Seduction: Nonsensical and ridiculous. Porn is ubiquitous and free, so I'd prefer my anime to have a little more story to it. If I just wanted to watch a bunch of random fucking for barely any reason, I could pick from any number of xHamsters, PornHubs, etc.

---- Movies ----
  • A couple of the Bible Blacks, though I wish there was more story. These feel like American porn--barely any story there at all to string together the fucking scenes.
  • Akira I watched like 20 years ago. It's a classic
  • Other classics I've watched and liked: Totoro, Howl's, Mononoki, Kiki's.
  • Vampire Hunter D, both movies. Similar to the Hellsing shows: Some slower bits, but more manageable because these were movies and not tv shows with fluffer episodes. Overall, enjoyed enough to watch the sequel.
So, for all my complaining about Bible Black, Shinobi, etc, I'm not against porn-ish anime. But I really miss things like La Blue Girl, where there was more actual story surrounding the tentacle porn.

As I said in the Anime thread, Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha) series all have the same problem - Status Quo is God, and the only plot advancement is "this power is now obsolete, I need to master a new fighting move." Same thing went for Ranma 1/2 too.

If you want porn with a story, try Urotsukidoji.

If you want some of the best (non-porn) Anime out there, try Black Lagoon. Also recommended, Cowboy Bebop. If you get around to it, I'd also be curious to know what you think of Code Geass, which is not "the best anime out there" but is one of my favorites, warts and all.

And apropos of nothing, I found "Redo of Healer" to be a little too squicky to really enjoy.

I have both Black Lagoon and Cowboy Bebop on the server waiting to be watched. Urotsukidoji wasn't as easy to come by via legitimate sources.

Ahhh yeah, I guess it would be. I mean, I have them... on VHS, as you know >_< .... let me check a few of the mustier corners of the web...

It's been suggested earlier, but Konosuba is a hilarious take on the Isekai genre.
While I agree, I would recommend watching an actual isekai or two, to really feel the lampooning of the common crutches they use.
And really, Tin doesn't sound like he has the time to spend on mediocre anime >_< I mean, Overlord is a REALLY good isekai but it's not really what Konosuba is making fun of - more along the lines of Sword Art Online or Log Horizon.

I...uhhh...own the entire thing on disc if someone wants me to say uhhh share it....
you want it @GasBandit @Tinwhistler ?
Well, I already found a "de-censored" version of the first movie, do you have Demon Womb, Return of the Overfiend, and Inferno Road?

I have them all on VHS but would the digitization of a 30 year old VHS even be worth it? The only thing that they seem to have going for them is they predate the censorship, which is not a thing I knew about until I tried to torrent it.
