Sorry, Eriol! I was digging down from my place and broke (fell) through to a lava pit. I mined some coal I found there thinking that the light was coming from the lava. then I started exploring and found torches everywhere. When I FINALLY found my way out it was your place. So I'll have to go back & patch that hole. Sorry, man.
No worries man. Frankly I'm surprised that the cave system there did NOT intersect with anybody until now, given how massive it is. A few coal is no worries. I THINK I've explored the entire cave system, so I'm glad you were able to make your way out.

As for the torches... I lit that place with the goal of "no monsters" when they come. I hope I've succeeded, but we'll find out eventually!

Is there any way to check a server log and see who has been on the server and try to figure out if someone not on the forums has been logging on? I personally in the last week or so have seen many names I dont know.

Maybe can narrow it down. I would hate to think such asshattery is comming from a forumite.
There's a log, but I can't download it while the server is still writing to it. Noax can probably look at it though.[/QUOTE]

Gas and I just looked into it and decided to ban the names we didn't recognise that had been on-line since the incidents occurred. Only two players, as it turns out: Raidrinn and drarec. If either of those is someone you know and can vouch for, speak up. If either of those is you, you should probably speak up as well :p

Keep in mind you might not get unbanned right away though. We're still figuring out our options on how deal with this.

Beta is out and early returns are that it's buggy as fuck.
Updated. After a backup, of course.

I figured it was Raidrinn. He was doing some exploring about the time these things were happening. I didn't want to say anything as he is mike's friend and I didn't want to cast aspersions.

By the way, we'll soon be seeing a guy under the name of Mudbunny. I'll vouch for him.

Like the giant angel Chikii, Gas!
Thanks. The cartograph doesn't really do it justice.

I notice somebody's built what looks to be an edo-period japanese palace down southeast of najamesk1's place... that looks like it might be snazzy.

Huh. According to the minecraft official forums, the new leaf decay code is basically any leaf block more than 4 spaces from a wood block decays, end of story.

Soooo... bye bye hedges and topiary/leaf sculptures :/

After looking at the most recent map, I have an idea for my next big project, but I want to make sure it's cool with other people here, especially Far.

I want to make a decently sized lake near mine and Far's place, then have a big river going from it all the way out west to the bay above Gasbandia.

I don't have a problem with it, just remember rivers are a pain to construct, a bucket at a time.

Also: watch out for lava.

Wow, I'm reading in the Penny Arcade forums, and some of these bugs are absurd:

1) You can no longer move items in the hot bar, or the lowest row of inventory while using chests.

2) Opening a chest while holding a tool moves the tool into your inventory.

3) The old bug that repaired your tools if you dropped them no longer works. Instead, when you pick up a tool off of the ground, two are placed in your inventory. "Aw yiss! Infinite diamond picks!" you might say. But don't be fooled. One of the items you picked up is real, and the other is a cheap copy manufactured in China. The cheap copy only has One HP and will break the first time you use it.

Does Notch do any kind of internal testing before dumping these patches? I mean, I realize as an alpha stage... we pretty much are the testers, but damn can't he at least fire it up on a server and play with it for a half hour or so?

Ugly ugly bugs.

Also, I am very sad that my neighbor FnordBear's tree got burned :(. I liked that tree FnordBear!

The code he released today is the official BETA code. While in most places beta means, "Features are complete and mostly working" in Notch land it really means, "We're doubling the price and ending the "free lifetime updates" offer. Oh, and leaves now decay. Sorta.

But, honestly, it his customer's fault for buying it and continuing to talk it up to other people.

The air is ripe for some other developer to iterate on the theme/genre, and if notch doesn't stay on his toes (and honestly he's only putting in a half hearted effort now, and it really shows) it'll be one of those, "here today, gone tomorrow" 15 minutes of success stories.

Hopefully he's invested his earnings wisely....

Heh, he probably has. In the "swedish 60% tax to live in our socialist paradise" plan. I'm probably not reading it correctly, but if I am, the way their government pensions work, he ought to be comfortable for the rest of his life pretty much now.

Cheesy, I won't be building much near ground level and a lake would improve the view. I'll try to give you a hand as well when I can. Haven't been on much lately.

Also, I've found building a lake/river isn't all that bad. Once you've got an infinite supply going on in a corner somewhere, just add source blocks along the edges and it goes pretty fast.

Okay, cool. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't gonna interfere with anything you might have planned.

And drifter, that was pretty much what I was planning on doing. But with how large this project will be, it's still gonna be a long process. But it'll be cool to have water access from where Far and I are all the way out to near Gasbandia.

So now that we are in beta and supposedly mod support is on Notch's radar has any more thought been given to mods?

Thinking especially item generation mods. A few folk have really big projects going and if item duping no longer works that is really going to stifle a bit of the creativity of some of the things I have seen. It leaves hard to get blocks in just the hands of the admins which means they either get pestered to be block generators or only they get to build really cool stuff.

Not trying to rock the boat just bringing up something that is kinda food for thought/relevant.

This is actually a great time to do a bit of a reveal. We had talked before about the possibility of going to a dedicated server instead of leaching noax's as his hadn't yet been upgraded to the super-speedy pipe he was hoping to have in place already.

So I leased one for a year. I did this for a number of reasons.

  1. Updates are done automatically - Having this server doesn't require Noax to be online for an update. The server farm will do that automatically.
  2. Mods are updated automatically - One reason we don't have mods right now is because it's a pain in the ass for Noax. When they change the version he'd then have to go update all the mods one at a time. It's why we haven't had mods at this point. Or at least a good portion of it.
  3. The server comes with a 15 man Vent server - As of January or February the HF vent server expires. I'd have to spend $40 or so to redo it. This way I don't have to spend the money for it but we can still use one for gaming and WoW, etc.
  4. Easier server manipulation - Right now if there's something up with the server Noax has to be around to restart it. With a dedicated it can be Noax, Gas or anyone else who has the power. By the way, that does not include me. I don't know enough about it to even start being an admin of that.
So there you go. Right now Noax and Gas are looking at the new server and have been doing some tests. With the beta coming out today and everything down anyway they figured it was a good time to make the switch. They will be doing the work and testing it. If it goes fine they'll let us know. If they don't test successfully then we stay as we are with no harm no foul.

Thoughts?

That sounds pretty damn spiffy actually. If it does turn out to be a better option on the technical side of things count me as a supporter of a move to the new venue. I would even fire up vent and play around on it, something I haven't done since killing my WoW addiction.

So things are looking up.

Excellent....exxxxxceellllent</burns>

Something else that this does. It has better logging and player control. So the griefer? Not as much of a problem.

Fresh server to play around on? Awesome. Count me in. :D

That is also a huge plus. Still though I try to staple a sliver lining to everything. When the server is back up Ill be clearing out the wreckage of my tree and building floors and making basically a large, central tower.

Out of a non-flammable material at that.

Nothing new & fresh. All of your current builds will be there. You will lose NOTHING!

So Gasbanditia is still there with his insane zepplin. The death star is intact.

Yeah, as Dave said, we'll be migrating the existing map, as of midday monday, to the new server. You just put in the new address, which will be revealed soon, and you're back in the world just as it was and can continue. We'd kinda been holding off for a couple reasons - 1, we were testing out the capabilities of the server to a degree, 2 - we wanted to see how the server handled patches/updates, and 3 - due to the nature of the server, moving the map file from noax's box to the new server would take at least a day, during which both servers would be down. Since Notch forced that happenstance upon us anyway, we decided to pull the trigger on it now, while the downtime was already a given :p

Yes, we'll be using some mods going forward, especially administration and security mods to squash this griefer problem before it blooms out of control. I've already got it set up so that we should all have build/dig access, but anybody who comes on new from this point forward (or who I didn't recognize the username of) will only be able to look but not interact, at least until an admin promotes them.

I've also gone ahead and activated two other mods on the server - minecart mania and magic carpet.

Minecart Mania makes boosters more reliable - no longer do you have to rely on friction-glitches, rather you just build a section of track across a gold block and any minecart moving over it will immediately accelerate to 100%. There are other tricks too, but you'll have to look them up in minepedia.

Magic Carpet is... well, it's not quite a poor-man's "fly mode," it's more like a self-adjusting scaffold. turned on and off by typing /mc, magic carpet builds a 5x5 flat grid of glass in any empty space immediately under you, and destroys/builds itself as you move. IE, you could walk off a cliff and a moving platform of glass will keep you at the same altitude. Jumping will raise the scaffold, looking straight down while moving will lower it. This will make it so building on the outside of tall structures is much easier, as will be getting a bird's eye view. But be careful... you CAN lag off the edge of the scaffold if you aren't careful.

Once we get the thing up, established and stable, I'll fiddle around with it a little and figure out some kits and or /give permissions. Meanwhile, I'm 99% certain the vast majority of us stocked up on contraband/memory hacked items and hid them away in chests somewhere, so that should tide you over until we get the item spawning straightened out :p

For a complete list of available mods on the server, click here.

It should be noted that this solution will always mean some down time every patch day - the guys at multiplay have to get and process the new server software, AND wait for the new version of hMod to support it (hMod is manditory for all multiplay.co.uk servers). However, I don't think this will be much of an inconvenience, as the benefits of the mods outweighs the down side of the downtime, and frankly, every patch seems to need a day or two to shake out the bugs anyway before things work right again. And it's a huge load off any of our admin's plates, because the guys at multiplay are basically already paid to maintain and update all these umpteen quadrillion mods for us.

We shall not discuss my Vault! :)

Otherwise this is all pretty frackin cool. Are there plans to take care of the Forrest of Fire to the east...Been kinda wanting to expand my operations out that way with a series of flying islands.

Noax already dealt with the forest fire. You will note it is no longer present on the cartograph.

And there's something else cool in the pipe Noaxark has been working on. I'm not sure if it's quite ready yet for public consumption, but it should be soon if it isn't already, and it's pretty darn cool.

Gaaaah! You jerk! Don't tease us :)

Seriously though everyone of you guys deserve our thanks. You have gone to a big effort to let us play in your sandbox :)
