Looks like Nevada is screwed either way

Okay, as the title suggests, I'm no fan of Harry Reid.

Having said that, his Tea Party-backed Republican opponent keeps getting farther and farther out onto the fringe. A sampling of her positions include:

1) Banning homosexual couples from adopting on the basis that they are unfit to be parents
2) Allowing various religious leaders to endorse candidates and become involved in campaigns
3) Trying to tie government and religion closer together
4) Dissolving the Department of Education
5) Dissolving the IRS
6) Deny protection of civil rights to homosexuals
7) Ban abortion in all cases, even rape and/or incest
8) She's rumored to be a Birther, though she won't admit it publicly

And that's just the stuff from recent articles I've read. Now, I'm sure some people will agree with some of those ideas. Obviously Libertarians are in favor of removing the Department of Education, for example. But taken as a whole, this paints the picture of a person who is wildly reactionary, in my opinion. It also suggests a woman whose ideal world doesn't include anything but straight, white protestants.

Were I to live in Nevada, I would seriously start looking at 3rd party candidates.

I agree, what I've heard about her is pretty nutty, but I find it surprising that anyone thinks almost any of those things could ever get past candidate pandering and into actual law.

Even if those specific things do not, there are still a good number of highly damaging things she could do to further her goals that do in fact have precedent. Observe, for instance, the ghastly state of the Arizona education system, the abortion mess in Utah, and how far Prop 8 managed to get in California.

Her specific, stated objectives need not be feasible in order for her to be dangerous.

It's all polishing doorknobs on the titanic anyway at this point, might as well get some conservative insanity damage in there with all the liberal insanity damage being done. After all, it's not like we're on the verge of electing a new, competent congress who can get things back on track and THIS is what threatens that.

/guns and canned goods. Hope you got yours.

I for one welcome such a strong supporter of Christian family values. I can't wait to see her put paid to all those casinos and brothels, those godless basta... wait, you mean she isn't intent on shutting down those dens of iniquity? Well I don't know what to think now.

That voting for her or Reid is like choosing if you want ice or fire to destroy the world?:p

I hold with those who favour fire.

I'm voting for Jon Snow, because it sucks to be him the least.

I dunno, Daenerys has a pretty sweet deal by the end of the third book. If you discount those shifty mercenaries and her pets' eating habits, of course.

I really hope I can move out of Nevada before the crap hits the fan.

Because along with our crappy candidates, our budget is pretty much screwed over.
Oh hey, you can come over to California. We don't have ANY budget problems whatsoever.*

*We're so in debt that we don't have a budget anymore, it's just a large sucking black hole where the capitol used to be

My favorite story about Sharron Angle is from early in the campaign when she was talking to a reporter about her plans after she becomes the Senate Majority leader... because she thought that if she beats the Majority Leader, she becomes the new one.

Pfft. Everyone knows you have to defeat the Senate Majority Leader in single combat to do that.

Seriously though, the only reason that Angle is the republican candidate is because Reid released advertisements against Sue Lowden during the primaries, since he thought he'd have a better chance against Angle.

Well, I can keep my beer cold with ice, but with fire I can still barbecue. Damn, this is hard.

True, but in her case it's more like she's constantly getting better again after having awful things happen to her. One of these days, a messenger will come at 3 in the morning, saying that Stannis is raising an army to cross the sea in the next 3 months, and what is she going to do?!.

Jon Snow knows nothing.
Which is why the least amount of bad shit has happened to him. Nothings sucks more in those books for a POV character and everyone around them than actually knowing something important.

Probably nothing, because the book ain't never gonna get written.

If some pol made a campaign promise to force George R.R. Martin to actually move it along with those books, I might actually vote for him.
The reason I never read past book two was because I found out how long it's been since he published the last book, and realized it wasn't worth it.

Same reason I never started book one.

I'll get to it if/when he finishes the series.

question though: does Tyrion Lannister end up growing a beard to cover up his scars?

---------- Post added at 12:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:17 AM ----------

Aha! He does! I knew it!
So by the end, Tyrion's a bearded dwarf who wields an axe into battle and, like all Lannisters, has a thing for gold.
I hope I'm not the only one who noticed that.

This, my friends, is why Mr. Martin is a genius fantasy writer.

Y'know... when he actually writes.

I love the Song of Ice and Fire...But damnit, when's the next one coming out? Stop making TV, you idiot!

Oh, also, I'm still waiting for Bran to do something spectacular.

It's general advice for if society falls apart due to an uprising, quarantine, or natural disaster: You want canned food so you have something to eat/barter with (because safe, reliable food sources will dry up very quickly) and you want weapons for the obvious reason. It's sound advice if a bit morbid. Disasters in places like New Orleans really do highlight why having a plan for a long term disaster IS a good idea, but Gas really IS suggesting people do it because he predicts the balkanization of the US within our lifetimes.

And I expect him to pop out that map again now that I said "balkanization" :D

I

Iaculus

Honestly, I suspect that there's been crazy survivalists stockpiling for the US going under since the Declaration of Independence. This is hardly a new thing.

Yup, they're the two I'm most curious about...All the rest, I can sort of see fitting together (though, obviously, there are plenty of unknowns) in the greater scheme of things. Arya and Bran clearly DO have importance, and interesting things have happened to both, but how/where will they fit in the story later on?
Especially since both seem to be on a path that will require a lot of time to learn - which they don't really have....

Daenarys as well.

She's older, but she's all the way across the sea with basically no functional army, and it seems unlikely that Children of the North, or whatever is coming over the Wall will wait for her to get her shit sorted out if she takes her time.

That said, I'm going to be a little irritated if after all that buildup, she shows up in the last reel and her dragons save the day, and the grateful folks make her Queen of the World. Even with all the time spent on her story, that would still be a bit too much Deus out of my Machina.

This is the greatest thing I've read in a week. Thanks for that.
It has to be a local thing. No one here is screaming about collecting guns and canned goods for the supposed coming apocalypse.
Try going to a Southern Baptist Convention Tent Revival, you'll hear all that that you can stand and then some.

It is also the policy of the Mormons to maintain years worth of provisions.
