"Our machines are too dependable and the replacement motherboards are backing up in the warehouse."

"Call up the BIOS engineers, and let's have a little chat with them..."

They're just trying to do people a favor by keeping them from using Dells.

As someone who does Tech Support for an organization that exclusively uses Dell Computers, I can assure you that no one has ever said that.

Sure hope that's a model that supports recovery BIOS update from a USB stick.

No kidding. I think I saw one bad mobo in 2 years doing tech support for a decently sized Dell-only university.

I'm not counting the ones users destroyed via coffee and such, of course.

Oh I caught about 5,000 bad Dell Mobos at my office once. Dell had to do the warranty replacements for free. I got a wireless headset as a bonus.

... Damn. What was the issue/symptoms? I'm guessing it was all from the same shipment.

Yes, one shipment. About half the computers for the agency. It was around 2004 when Dell bought some shitty, mislabeled capacitors. The mobo would fail, and take the power supply with it. When a user went to turn on the PC, they would only get a amber light on the power button. I had about 10 of these calls a day for a week, and I took the evidence to the head of IT once it was obviously state wide.
