[Gaming] Board Game Praise

Talk about your favorite board games here. Get people interested in trying something new.

My list doesn't include a lot of new games. Don't have the time to play really, so no point in investing in anything new. But here are some great ones you guys should try if you have the chance.

Betrayal at House on the Hill: This is a co-op game where the players investigate the namesake House on the Hill. The house is made up of random room tiles, so the layout is different with every exploration. Things start off simple at first, but as the house is further explored the chances increase that the "haunt" will begin. There are about 60+ random scenarios that can occur with the haunt. Perhaps a mummy comes to life looking for a bride, or a werewolf stalks the halls, or the house itself comes to life. In every scenario a "traitor" is revealed, and one of the players becomes the villain and has his own set of winning requirements. There is a 2nd edition out. They fixed a bunch of stuff including making sure that the "Underground Lake" isn't an attic tile.

Robo-Rally: This is a game that comes with it's own level of frustration. Each player represents a group of bored-as-hell AIs who control the robots in a manufacturing plant. They decide "what the hell, let's have a race?" and Robo-Rally was born. Each player gets a robot to torment and is issued a series of move cards that they may input into their bot's programing. Each of the five moves is carried out simultaneously with each player, with a higher valued card having move priority. And since the robots can push, shoot, or screw with each other, there is a lot of potential for shenanigans.

Vegas Showdown: Each player takes on the role of a Vegas Hotel mogul who try to outbid each other on various hotel/casino rooms, and then use them to create a winning floorplan. The winner is the tycoon with the most "fame", however "Population" and "money" are almost as important as they are the only way of getting increased funds to help you outbid for the expensive additions available later in the game. Unlike the first two this one has a game play of only about an hour, which makes it considerably short.

Monopoly Deal: The card game version of Monopoly, and probably 10x better than Monopoly itself. Each game is about 10-20 minutes long.

We pretty much played the classics at my house, but game night was a HUGE deal when we were kids and is probably one of the reasons that our family is as close as we are.

Favorites include: Trivial Persuit, Uno (yeah, it's a card game, but you included the monopoly one :p), Yahtzee, Sorry, Mouse Trap, Boggle, Operation.

My favorite obscure game was I Vant to Bite Your Finger. I have to actually convince people that this game existed.

This one is my favorite too. I don't know any new games, but we always gather happily for a round of Robo Rally shouting "Do the Robo dance!"
The Robo dance is when everybody twitches and twists his head as he tries to figure out the movement planning for his droid. Because not only are the robots moving simultaneously but also the board, the droid factory, has a lots more potential for shenanigans as the conveyor belt pull robots along or change their orientation and direction.

I really enjoy Small World but don't get to play it enough. This video does a better job of explaining it than I can, while being pretty entertaining itself.

I've only recently been initiated into the world of super board games. Mansions of Madness, Colliseum, Small World, Shadows Over Camelot are the first bunch I've played. Apparently the next one we're playing is Relic, which is apparently the Warhammer 40K version of Talisman, a game I'm told is good.

Man, I haven't played Robo Rally in years! I miss it. :(

As for the classics, I played a lot of Clue and Scrabble growing up.

king of Tokyo
You hand your friends are giant robots battling one another for domain over Tokyo! Gain energy points to unleash attacks, and win by either killing your opponents or gaining enough victory points.

Sentinels of the multiverse!
You ad your friends are superheroes trying to stop a villain and his or her crew from their goals. Each villain has a win condition, and each hero a special focus. Gain powers or use tech to bring down the bad guy in a series of different environments. The best thing is the game runs itself on it's turn system so no one has to be the bad guy. Depending on the number of.heroes, the setting and the villain it can be either really easy and fun or really hard and also fun.

werewolf
Like assassin, but with a fantasy setting. You are either a werewolf, or a villager. If you are team evil you want to kill everyone at night in their sleep. If you are team good you want vote on who you think is a werewolf to execute. Try not kill villagers though! If it comes down to 50/50 good vs evil, evil wins. Lots of additional characters to play too, like the seer who can, once per night, determine if someone is a wolf or not. Con: needs a moderator

I'm a big BSG fan - am assuming that since you listed it it's decent - any specific thoughts about it?
Its one of my favourite board games and got me into the show

You play cooperatively as cast from the show trying to get to the lost colony. The different characters have different special abilities.

At the beginning of the game everyone draws cards that say you are a cylon or you are a human.

Give it a try its really cool.

No love for Risk?

True story: My family and I never bothered to read the instruction booklet for Risk when we first got the game, so we just houseruled everything at first. So you got wacky scenarios like "any territory can attack any other territory, regardless of location."

Played Settlers of Catan today. I've played it before a few times, but this is the first time we had a chance to pull out my copy of it which I received last Christmas. For those who are unaware for some reason, Settlers is a resource management game that requires careful planning and strategy to win. The board is made of specific land types that each yield a particular resource, and it's a race to tap these resources. There are a good number of expansions, but we just have the base set. My wife actually walked away the winner of our game. She was just as shocked.

Risk: I make it a rule to never break out Risk amongst my friends. I have become disenchanted with it over the years, but that's not the main reason I avoid it. Mostly it's the rage that the game brings out in people. After I denied him a continent bonus a friend of mine tossed the board into the air and proceeded to strangle me.
You think I'm kidding but this actually happened. He was pissed.

I have a specific thought: It's an awesome game! It's a bit hard to play as a cylon the first time though, because you can't ask about the rules, etc, if you want to stay undercover (no one knows who the cylons are), plus the humans can collectively devise strategies whereas you are on your own.

If your going to play Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill, you really do need to get the 2nd edition by Wizards of the Coast. It fixes so many things.

Arkham Horror is much better if you get the expansions, especially The King in Yellow.

I have never played a game of Risk that didn't ether end with everyone quitting or a fist fight.

You guys need to play war fish. It's an online RISK where you just get an email notification when it's your turn. You can okay a games.over a few weeks or if you have time start a Google hangout or something and just have fun. It's got different maps and stuff too so you can play differently scenarios.

Man, I love this thread. I love games, and I am desperately jonesing for a regular game night with friends. Worst part about being a grown-up = no free time. :(
