...I really saw it as too little, too late.
I mean, it's one thing to pardon someone because you later realize they were unjustly accused of something.
It's something else entirely to pardon someone because you were the one in the wrong. Then it just seems more like trying to soothe a troubled conscience.

And as a gesture of sorryness and goodwill it really has more meaning thant when the catholic churchfinally pardoned Galileo Galilei for believing in a heliocentric universe.
