I know there are a few people playing the game here and I just wanted to see what other people thought of the game.

Overall I thought it was a pretty good remake but there were a lot of things that bugged me about it too.

Pros:
- Graphics were nice. Soldiers, aliens and effects were all great. The customization feature for the soldiers was fun. I love naming all my troops and configuring their looks and loadouts (minor nitpick... why can't I change the flag on a soldier's back?).
- The game lore was fairly faithful to the original. It was awesome seeing all our old favorite aliens like sectoids, floaters, chryssalids, sectopods, cyberdisks and mutons. I did miss the reapers and snakemen though.
- In game cutscenes with your customized soldiers were a nice touch... though this definitely could have been taken further.
- Sounds are music were great and a huge step up from the early days of xcom.

Cons:
- Game was way too short. I finished my first playthrough in about 13 hours on normal difficulty. This is really poor pacing. The original xcom could go on for way WAY longer.
- Aliens don't move around behind the scenes on their turn unless you've "activated" them (terror missions seemed to be an exception to this). It was annoying because you couldn't get aliens to blunder into an area with overwhelming overwatch fire on their turn unless you had already seen them first.
- I found the game too dumbed down and streamlined. No more inventory. No more general stores. No more ammunition (I loved having to manage all the base supplies, it made for some interesting strategic gameplay). Streamlining soldier stats worked okay with the addition of the skill trees but overall I think they just plain made things too simple (I also missed alien invasions of your own base).
- Why the hell can't I sell old laser weapons and obsolete armors on the black market? Militaries around the globe would pay top dollar for these things to help fight off the aliens.
- A lot of foundry upgrades seem totally useless to me.
- What the hell is up with stupid exploding cars (and tanks) killing soldiers in one hit when a super death beam from a Sectopod can't get the job done in one hit?
- No map function and only 6 soldiers max per mission? I loved having hordes of troops and tanks in the original. It made it feel like a large scale battle and not just a skirmish. (I also found the maps kind of small)

Despite my numerous cons, I felt the game was good overall and I'm going to be attempting an Ironman game on classic difficulty just to see how I do.

Still playing it, about 8-9 hours in.

Pros:

- I LOVE the music, there's one combat track that is amazing. Sounds are top notch.
- Storyline is solid, damned solid son.
- Game is streamlined, I do like it though and is a great game to entice new gamers for future games I hope.
- Plasma weapons. :awesome:
- Combat can get pretty intense. I love it. Playing it on Hard.... it's HARD. THANK YOU.
- Love the options to customize soldiers. I renamed all my characters to friends in RL. It felt cool as hell. Watching the memorial wall was touching, it'll be even more next game when I won't do the tutorial and have a few names up there that shouldn't be.
- Mind Control... holy fuck can that fuck up your day fast. You're NEVER SAFE. I like it.
- Perfectly well created PC release with no control or stability issues, this should be mentioned.

Cons:

- Enemy AI can sometimes be bullshit. I refuse to believe their ability to hit my soldiers at impossible angles. Mutons are the prime example of bullshit currently.
- In some missions, enemy spawns are bullshit. I've had a few cases where they spawned on top of my sniper.
- Reaction fire is not well executed, previously your soldiers had a reaction stat that would allow them to maximize their return attack now it's basically shooting it at a horrible % then watch the enemy walk up to him and miss an incredibly opportunity to blow its head off.
- Great for newcomers, solid game, wish inventories and stats had more importance.
- I can only shoot enemies, I wish I could make holes into walls without using my rockets or grenades.
- I hate how most enemies stay in the same place and you really need to work out a great plan to ambush a few shots in... they just have a 2 sec cinematic and go to their cover positions. Lame, I'd like to ambush them.
- Heard reports how this game can be done in 15 hours, old games would take nearly 100 hours.
- Fuck Nigeria.

^ I miss being able to shoot out walls and things too. Also I hate when my troops panic and they aim at another troop on purpose. At least in the originals I think they tended to fire randomly and happened to hit their own guys as in they were panic blind firing not "Hey things are going bad lets make it easier for the aliens to kill me"

That and when it is 4 versus 1 and I plow through 4 aliens and one alien manages to get a lucky shot and kill a guy and the 3 other soliders panic even though they have the alien surrounded. What sort of elite force was I given?

Though overall I love the game so far brings back memories.

I have prepared a statement.

Ahem.

To my friends and family who've died in the line of duty, your losses will be mourned, but they were a necessary sacrifice in the face of the unrelenting alien hordes. To my remaining friends, and Hulk Hogan, I will do my best as your leader to lead you to victory after victory. To my sniper Brian, fuck you. When you die, I will laugh. 98% chance to hit with a 70% chance to critical and you fucking miss. Eat shit you shaky handed fuck.

Thank you, and good night.

Jay I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment. Telphius, I agree with you too.

I really REALLY miss being able to shoot out walls and doors and such. I remember missions in the old xcom where I would just level buildings with insane volumes of HE autocannon fire.

I'm still irritated with forced weapon choices and no inventory. I like having resupply soldiers and crazy assed grenadiers (take the guy with the highest strength and throwing accuracy and load him up with as many grenades as he can carry plus a pistol as backup. Super dangerous as he gains skills).

Overall though... a very good remake.

I've started my Ironman Classic game. HOLY SHIT is it rough.

I never even used a pistol yet.

Depending on how you set up your snipers... you may or may not need pistols. My snipers all had the ability where they could shoot at targets that other soldeirs could see (so they gave up the snap shot sniper rifle ability). Plasma pistols were INSANELY useful for them as they were accurate as hell and they could run far and still shoot a snap shot. Plasma pistols still pack a good punch too. They typically did between 4-6 damage with my snipers using them.

I still equipped all my troops with the best pistols I have because sometimes you just need an extra few damage points (and you are out of ammo for your main weapon). They also come in handy for whittling down wounded enemies so you can stun them.

What difficulty are you playing on Jay? Classic?

Classic Hard. I don't believe on Ironman until I know the ins and outs of the game 100%.

Beyond stunning alies for research... is there a point to keep stunning them?

There isn't much benefit to stunning more than one of each type (as far as I can tell) except that you get to collect their weapons without them self-destructing. It's a very cost effective way to equip soldiers by stunning multiple mutons and getting their plasma rifles (and grenades). That's how I stocked my armory without having to spend gobs of money (I stunned sectoids for their plasma pistols).

I will tell you this. Ironman is brutal... absolutely brutal. I have deaths mounting like you wouldn't believe and I'm resorting to protecting experienced soldiers with meat shields. Despicable... but it's the only way until I get better armour.

I didn't know that... now I do.

SO STUN EVERYTHING cause 220 dollars per weapon is bullshit once I research them and use the cash to buy armor.

I think sometimes the weapons still blow up but your chance at keeping them is much higher... and the extra cash allows foundry projects, officer training and armor for your soldiers :).

Basically if you can work in a stun without endangering your soldiers too much... it's worth it (except on a cyberdisk... fuck those assholes).

Man, I had to abandon a 5 hour ironman game due to far too many casualties crippling my progress. This is going to tear my hair out crazy to finish an ironman game lol

XCom is very mod friendly - there's already a strong showing of mods that will likely be supported by Firaxis:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/10/17/xcom-mod-second-wave/

Par example:
  • New Economy: The funding offered by individual council members is randomized
  • Not Created Equally: Rookies will have random starting stats
  • Hidden Potential: As a soldier is promoted, his or her stats increase randomly
  • (Bugged) Red Fog: Any wounds taken in combat will degrade a soldier’s stats for that mission
  • Absolutely Critical: A flanking shot guarantees a critical hit
  • The Greater Good: The secret of psionics can only be learned from interrogating a psionic alien
  • (Bugged) Marathon: The game takes considerably longer to complete
  • Results Driven: A country offers less funding as its panic level increases
  • High Stakes: The rewards granted for stopping alien abductions are randomized
  • Diminishing Returns: The cost of satellites increases per construction
  • The Blitz: Aliens target a larger set of cities during abduction attacks
  • More Than Human: The psionic gift is extremely rare

Top mods out so far:

I started a new Ironman game (again) and I'm 3 hours in with only 1 casualty. However, I've lost one country from the council and I have 4 others at critical levels. Freaking aliens.

Adam, a lot of those mods sound really interesting. I really REALLY miss my inventory though. I hate having one stupid grenade or one medikit or one scope or whatever the hell.

I'll wait a bit for a mod to become stable, I want the PC doesn't cheat like fuckers one. I always felt some level of bullshit when in firefights.

It really does feel like bullshit doesn't it? Oh look... 95% chance to hit... failed... twice in a row. Then alien fires shot from halfway across entire map, crits your best guy in full cover wearing titan armour. Dead.

You know what I've actually found really useful for shooting through walls? Suppression fire.

It's not the same of course, but when the only fucker in range of your heavy has full cover and a 10% chance to win, it's fucking satisfying to lay down suppression with a heavy plasma rifle, give him an aim penalty, the rest of the squad an aim bonus, and blow away all his cover.
