Soliloquy

I found my first gray hair. I am far more not OK with this than I had anticpated.
I found my first gray hair at 24. Well, a white hair, but whatever.

My thought was, "well, maybe I get to spend most of my life with a full head of white hair. Not so bad."

I found my first grey hairs (there were 5 of them together) when I was 25. Now, 15 years later, I have been recently considering no longer dyeing my hair since the color never takes on the grey any how.

Wondering if I want to stop following Spoony on Twitter...

I turn 23 next month. So I only have just over a year to accomplish something great and be able to claim it was done in my "early 20's" :(

I'm glad I lost weight. I feel good and energetic. But how long is this change going to define me? It's all some friends and relatives can talk about. Maybe it's my fault. Did I let my personality go by the wayside while I was learning how to jog and do yoga. People used to say I was funny and smart. Now they say I'm thin (which isn't accurate anyway!). I'm grateful for the compliments and encouragement, but if my mother asks people to guess how many pounds I've lost one more time I am going to lose it. Balance. I need balance in my life again.

...and I know I bring it up a lot here in the fitness thread. But in life I often try to start conversations about other things, and this person only wants to talk about shopping for cute new clothes for me or something like that.

so thats why they call him fun size, its like an oxymoron term transplant. totally amazing!
I always thought fun size was a deceptive term anyway... More candy=more fun. Not that size matters that much anyway. That's the diplomatic female company line, yes?

Lost my mother-in-law to a combination stroke/aneurysm on Sat. She was in the room with a friend (who just so happens to be an RN) when it happened, was across the street from the Fire Dept, and the hospital is only 2mi down the road. Regardless, she was pretty much declared brain-dead within an hour and a half. Seems the resulting hematoma squashed her brain stem, rendering any kind of recovery pretty much impossible.

She was the one making all the money in the household (she not only ran/owned the business, she was also solely responsible for probably 75% of its output), so now we have a big pile of medical bills, her 90yr-old father and disabled husband to look after...and we have to cancel/repurpose her birthday party next week.

Fuck.

That....that qualifies as a "whiney baby rant" to you? Man, I don't want to know what your more serious rants are about.
Condolences and good luck and all that.

Didn't want to start a new thread, felt this warranted a lot more than just 25%. Also, I took off three days' vacation Tue through Thurs for my birthday, and usually during my vacations we burn some (most) of the time to go visit her family. However, since it was for my birthday, I decided we would skip that visit this time around so as to keep this vacation for myself.

So...yes. Plenty of primo rant potential in this whole situation.

Obviously a lot of rant potential there....I think you mistook my point. I consider this the "less" serious rant thread - to whine like a baby about the little stuff that annoys you, the silly frustrationss that bother you at the moment. Not....something serious like that.
Upon reflection, I realize we have a "minor rant" thread and a "whine" thread, but the "serious rant" thread seems to have gone the way of the dodo. Odd.
Anyway, I certainly didn't mean it disrespectful in ay way, to be clear.

Not at all. I wanted to give some explanation as to where I'd been the past few days, but I wanted to do more than merely say, "Someone I know died," or alternately start my own "I don't care" thread.

I'm really starting to get fed up with "ultra helpful" websites; especially hotels and insurance companies. My wife and I desperately need a weekend away from home in July, so I was looking up hotels in three cities, on two different chains' sites. I specified our arrival and departure dates, that there were 2 of us, that we wanted 1 room, and that we'd prefer a king sized bed and an in room jacuzzi/jetted tub. The two chains I was using were Choice Hotels (I somehow ended up a member of their occasionally shitty little savings club) and Holiday Inn. Things went... poorly. It looked a bit like this:

1) Log in to choicehotels.com, confirm my room preferences (they don't have a whirlpool pref, but they do have bed size and smoking/non-smoking selection), enter dates, number of adults, number of rooms, and first location. Hit search button. After searching I can miraculously choose that I want a whirlpool, so I do and also tell it to show me only hotels with available rooms (because apparently it assumes I want it to show me non-available rooms otherwise) then search again. Several hits come up, I start going through them to make sure that they really do have what I want and to check street addresses and prices. Hotel number 1, no rooms available with my preferences - you know, a suite with a king sized bed and wheelchair accessibility... which I can't seem to get rid of, because there's no option for accessibility, it's apparently a default option. Hotel number 2, no rooms; hotel 3, no rooms, etc. etc. on down the list. Of the 15 - 20 hotels on the list, none of them had the options I selected, but rather than tell me that up front, they decided to be super helpful and just show me a list of hotels in the area so I could decide that my requests were too demanding and start over. Get angry with web designer and wander off.

Okay, screw this. I don't really like Choice Hotels anyway, I'll go check out Holiday Inn.

2) Go to Holiday Inn's website, enter the same preferences as my choice hotels prefs, but choose the third location with a 100 mile radius search (which encompasses all three of my locations). Search brings up at least one hotel in each of my locations, so I go to compare prices. Price for location one comes up... looks a bit pricey, so I move on to location two. Except that it has now forgotten all of my information, so I put it in again with just location two as the location, and it brings up <drum roll please> location one. OK, let me try that again... close tab, open new tab, go back to site, put in dates/adults/rooms/bed/room type/location two, press search... location one. Gahhh!!! Why the hell won't you let me search for a new location?! What the hell is wrong with you morons?! Fine, fine... I'll close all the way out of the browser and then come back and try it again. Third try, decided just to open each location in a new tab after searching; get to a tab for each one with first night's room rate, go to check total weekend rate and the winner is... $0 for each one. But they'll still take my credit card information and charge me a rate that they're not willing/able to disclose for some bizarre reason.

Fine... you know what? I don't want to stay at your crappy hotels either. I need a damn cigarette. Come back 20 minutes later, try again (with Firefox instead of chrome this time, and discover that if I want to find out rates for three different hotels, in three different cities, I have to close and re-open my browser each time. And I have to use Firefox, because apparently Chrome remembers too much and will only give me $0 rates.

These web designers ought to be shot.

I work at a hotel in the Choice Hotels chain. I'll give you this chance to take back that "shitty" remark. :p

PM inbound as some secrets shouldn't be posted in an open forum. :)

Wait, so travel, which was arguably one of the first things to go completely online, is now going back?

Aaand now my Uncle's gone. This one is less of a surprise, his stomach cancer has been flaring up for much of the past year. Now I have to take a break from funeral prep so I can go to a funeral.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this.

It's like I explained to a gaming friend of mine. It's not unexpected for your perimeter defenses to take hits. But the enemy has unexpectedly broken through and they're starting to attack my main base. That is to say, I still have some grandparents left, so I was not expecting to lose parents and/or their siblings just yet, especially ones who are so much younger (both were only 60) or so active (uncle has been a marathoner for quite a while).

Rat stuff: I don't know which annoys me more, that Amun keeps burying the food dish in bedding, or that his brothers are too stupid to find it and act like they're starving. It hasn't moved in 8 months; just dig, you morons.

Man, I hope they don't just bulldoze wunderground's systems to put them out of business as a competitor, and actually keep all of their weather stations. Otherwise it's goodbye accurate weather predictions/observations/current conditions for me and hello pretending all of Western Washington is Seattle.
