My 4 year old daughter was really quiet for a few minutes yesterday. When she was done, she gave us this. All by herself. No coaching.
She can read very well. I have been reading Lord of the Rings to my 8 year old at night. While I was waiting for him to settle (he's fidgety), she started reading LotR out loud to everyone. *sniff*

Just officially finished my first year as a teacher! The fifth graders have this beautiful bridge ceremony where they cross this cute little fake bridge. On one side they hug their teachers goodbye, and on the other side the superintendent welcomes them to middle school. I didn't even teach the fifth graders, and I cried like a bitch. What a great day! 
11 Days of vacation starts Saturday morning. Right after payday.
Booked 2 nights in DC at a Clarion just E of Alexandria... at $35 per night. I might need a 3rd. Los Straitjackets and Atlanta Rhythm Section are in Annapolis on Wednesday.
Anyway. first on the agenda is the Air & Space annex at Dulles Airport. My sister is going to send me more scenic directions to Dulles than the beltway. Then it's more of the Smithsonian, the usual monuments, and whatever comes up from the peanut gallery that I haven't thought of yet.

Been away for a while, but a list of epic wins over the past couple months:
-Bought a house! Granted, it was RIDICULOUSLY cheap (<$15k) because it's a) in a really depressed area (center of Michigan) and b) fixxer-upper in relatively bad shape, but it's halfway between my school and my fiance's school, so it was cheaper than two rents in two cities an hour apart.
-Learning to fix a LOT of stuff (bonus for me!). I worked at a hardware store for two years, so I know the 'how' of fixing most of the stuff, but theory doesn't always translate into application...
-For your first two years as a PhD student, you're a pre-candidate. To become a candidate, you have to go through 'prelims' which are a fancy way of saying 'ball-bustingly hard two-week-long trial by fire'. I passed with flying colors, and was one of the first of my cohort to do so!
-Adopted another kitty! Pictures soon!

Our prelims vary by department, but our program is less 'everything' and more 'here's fourteen questions; choose an area of neuroscience, learn it in-depth, and write a grant on it in two weeks. Then defend it against three experts.' It's a useful and interesting experience, and would have been fun if it wasn't for the whole, "If you fail hard, you're kicked out of the program" thing.
Where, if you don't mind us asking? A possible future rendezvous may depend on it.

Had an early beach birthday party for my son today. It's the first time I have had to conduct one of their birthday parties all on my own. Usually my parents would come to CA to give me a hand. But I did it and everyone had a good time, most especially my son who has talked about nothing else since we left the beach when it was all over.
Jackson, actually; although I spend most of the week in Ann Arbor due to labwork. How about yourself? (Though this might be something to take to PMs...)
Got to Skype with my husband today. He's been gone for over 2 months now and we have quite a few more to go. The kids were so happy to see Daddy! I was, too.
And may involve more of his face than is in his avatar.
Screwed up getting tickets for last night's Nats game and bought a ticket for tonight instead. Since I got it on Stub Hub, the exchange office wouldn't help me. So as I walk out the door, I sarcastically say "anyone want a free ticket for tomorrow?" This group of guys says "We'll trade you for our spare for tonight." Sure.
My ticket: a regular field box seat on the first base line.
Theirs: PNC Diamond Club behind home plate. Complete with private bar/restaurant and server service right at the seat.
THEN, the game goes into extra innings. I left right after the 10th because I took the train to the game, and didn't know how they ran things if the game went long. But that's another thread. Things got weird in the area while I was in the stadium.
