Yeah, you can do it. It's just a lot harder and will take a lot longer.

I find it ironic that people complain about the lack of replay value in this game, and then complain that it's impossible to beat. Every elite/champion pack I face is a unique experience in emasculation.

Ironic?

Edit: Scythe, you absolutely do need AH gear to progress in inferno. There is no room for slack in your gearing, it has to be perfect for your build. I mean, ofc you can run inferno without it, but its harder
You seem to be speaking in circles here.

You do not need AH gear to progress in Inferno. You can run it without AH gear, but it will be much harder. That is the intent of the system. Inferno was defeated, even soloed, in the first 48 hours, before the vast majority would be far enough in Inferno to actually have Inferno gear on the AH. All I am saying is you do not need AH gear, it just would make your life a lot easier because you remove a lot of the randomization from the system.

It was defeated by a team of people all funneling their drops to the single person soloing it. Suggesting that that's somehow representative of how the game actually works is...not accurate.

Now, of course you can run anything in the game without gear from the AH. All the stuff on there dropped for someone, in a game just like yours. The thing is, the AH takes all of those drops that other people have had and puts them in one place, where you can get at them and buy them if you have the money - it takes millions and millions of random drops and lets you trade yours in for them, basically. While I agree to some extent that it seems like the AH is a bit too central to the gearing process, I don't understand why people seem to be so up in arms about using it at all, ever. The end result would be the same as if you got a really good item for another class, found someone who wanted it, and then traded for one that you wanted. It's just a bit more impersonal.

Was it? Because the person that beat it solo claims he was just going through the game with two friends, not an entire team. Unless you are talking about Method, which did the World Second Inferno kill hours after the first solo kill was achieved by Sygodoeden.

Is that the one who corpse-hopped past all the random elites in order to do the story bosses only?
Never heard of him corpse hoping, but I didn't exactly go through the entire thread. Though I would be surprised if he would be able to beat anything in Inferno if all he did was corpse-hop the entire game, considering how much it has been talked up here.

It could be someone else, but I did hear about someone getting through it that way. Thing is, the story bosses are - for the most part, anyway - way easier than some of the random elites, given the ridiculous combinations they can have, and the fact that you're fighting them in random areas that may or may not be incredibly punishing as well. The bosses are typically easier to deal with, and for the most part they're loaded with abilities that can be completely avoided. And as Necronic said earlier, it's a lot easier to put together a set of items to glass cannon through things than to construct a balanced one that can handle everything.

I understand that. I am not arguing that going through Inferno with all the gear I get myself is going to be a cake walk, I am simply pointing out it is possible.

I am just tired of everyone calling it impossible to beat Inferno without AH gear, that sentence is false, it is possible, but it sure ain't going to happen as easily as farming gold for a week and buying all the best items you can possibly find on the AH. I have never claimed everyone can beat Inferno without the AH, only that the AH is not the end all requirement to ever succeed in Inferno.

Edit: Fixed a mistyped word.

After reading all these angry words, I'm glad I never played D1 and 2. I'm having a blast with this game: the servers have only been down once when I wanted to play because of maintenance, I consider the auction house just another vendor, just with a lot more options, and I haven't even gotten to inferno yet, I'm just playing through all the classes before I start there. I just wish the AH was available without having to log out, because I'm lazy as heck. It's really my only annoyance with this game so far - well, that and the fact I'm in Europe so I usually don't get to play with you Americans unless you're on early.

I think the reason that they are doing that is to reduce stress to the database. Items are tracked at an individual level in D3, which makes the database significantly more resource heavy for queries. That said from what I understand they are running this database on 7200RPM platter drives. Which is a bit bwuhhh??

Ah, lovely...Disconnected "failed to create your party"; I can connect to the Battlenet servers, but it can't retreive my hero list.
Y'know what? MMOplayers may say all they want that the issues aren't that bad, that WOW has known much worse, that everything is smooth past the slightly bumpy launch, and whatever. This is 3 days in a row where I've had trouble playing because of the servers/connection isssues. I'm not even out of Act I on normal yet and I'm fed up with it. For all of the hundreds of hours I've wasted on D2, I honestly can't even see me playing more than this one character through normal if things don't get better and fast. Single player should NOT be fucked up because of server issues. Dcrew that shit, and all that.

I've logged over a hundred hours at this point. Possibly into multiple hundreds, I'm not sure. I've had problems connecting a handful of times. You may just be having bad luck.

While I still highly agree that we shouldn't have to connect to servers at all to play, every time you've said that the servers are down, I've logged on around the same time with no issues, so it sounds like the issue may be on your end.

Yeah, but which servers are you trying to connect to, and what country are you trying to connect from (ie, are you in the US and trying to connect to the US servers)? The EU servers could be down and the US servers not be down - the first night of release, when the US servers buckled under the load, I was over on the EU servers for a while. They'd already crashed and burned and phoenixed their way back up.

I only use the US servers. I don't think it matters where you're connecting from.

I mean, you guys may be incredibly unlucky, but I've clocked more D3 time in US prime time than probably anyone on this forum other than maybe Vrii and I don't have the issues you guys do. I've seen it a couple of days, but it usually gets cleared up in hours.

Auction house also is a bit spotty, but if you just check on it an hour or so later it's usually working again.

Yep. Couple times it's gone down for "scheduled" maintenance, and otherwise I'm able to get in and playing with no troubles. AH is spottier, but usually not down for more than a couple hours, tops. Also NA servers, connecting from Canada.

Right, but Bubble is in Belgium, I believe. So, unless he's skipping over the EU servers in favor for the US servers, everyone in the US checking to see if the server is up when he says it's down, doesn't really mean anything...

I tried to brofist you, but then I hugged you.

That felt gay so I unhugged you, and then I fisted you.

That sounds a lot gayer.

EU servers, obviously....And I don't know, it's not usually the connection failing - my internet's perfectly fine (I downloaded the client in 20 minutes :p). Guess I'm unlucky.

Noticing a huge jump in difficulty between Nightmare Act 4 and Hell Act 1. Shit, I can barely get out of New Tristram before an elite spawn rampages my corpse.

Sounds interesting. I just got to Act 4 NM so kinda looking forward to it myself. I know I've had to get a lot more strategic when it comes to taknig down elite packs over the course of Nightmare.
