I was just having a discussion about this today with a coworker. My company is very diverse, but one thing caught my eye the moment I started working here. The Europeans are generally smaller, but they eat the same portion sizes, the same food types, and aren't necessarily any more active that the Americans. But the Americans are larger. The Europeans have slighter builds, even when they do gain weight. It made me wonder if Americans truly are eating more than other populations, or is there something wrong with our food itself? Is it something to do with, for example, growth hormones and the like that go into our meat and milk?

That's an interesting question, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if there was something going on with our food supply and or food preparation that's influencing our weight as a nation. It's something that I was thinking of when I brought up my IBS when I switched doctors a while back, and he mentioned that as long as certain conditions don't appear, I don't really have anything to worry about, as just about everyone has at least a touch of IBS these days.

not just hormones, we have "sugar" in nearly all our foods. Another thing I've heard before is HOW we eat compared to the Europeans. i.e. Fast food and eating like you are at a trough compared to sitting down for an hour and eating the meal much more slowly (slow food.)

Corn sugar, I'm guessing.
Yes, there is so much HFCS in our bread, we might as well eat cake. Then there is the salt content of our food. Years ago a serving of Hidden Valley Ranch met your daily intake needs for salt. Then consider most people would put 3 servings of that crap on every salad and dipping health food in that swill.

I've been out with the French contingent a few times. They do indeed spend a long time at lunch, but not at eating. They seem to eat just as fast. They spend the rest of the time talking. Which could also be good. Less stress, less cortisol, etc.

Ye gods. Got a picture back from the conference I was just at in Vancouver. I designed a logo for credit unions that they hope to sell 250,000 of and as part of the kick off, here's a group of young leaders from around Canada and me....lounging in the middle.

In my head, they're all saying something in unison, like "I'm also a client!"

I have no idea why that picture is funny. I just know it is.
