I've been manning the phones here at home. Since this went nationwide I'm hearing from everybody. Even though my daughter is usually banned from the computer on school nights, I think I'm going to let her get on tonight. I doubt she has any homework and it'll be good for her to talk it out with her friends both near and far.

One thing I do have to say, and that's that the Omaha Police Department did an awesome job in responding. From first shooting to apprehending the guy (or finding him as the case may be) it was only 30 minutes. They had his information posted before he left the area. Fantastic job with this and getting the information out.

Sammi was huddled in a classroom for over 2 hours. She was in class when it came over the intercom: "Attention: The school is under Code Red lockdown. This is NOT a test!" After that, the teacher moved them all into a corner that could not be seen from the door. They were not allowed to text or call anyone or speak as it had to be as silent as possible. They had also shut off the lights so it was dark in the room. For 2 hours. They had NO idea what was going on, if the shooter was still in the school or anything else.
Once they finally found out what was going on they still had to stay there for a long time. About 4 hours later they were finally released. To get released to their parents they had to go through 3 individual checkpoints and get counted and marked off. After the third checkpoint they were released ONLY if their parents were there. A great number of kids who were eating lunch at the time had to hide in the kitchen.
Now to Robert. My daughter says he was a nice kid who was very funny and fun to be around. He worked with kids and had a big heart. This morning he was suspended by Dr. Kaspar for driving his car onto the football field and doing a lot of damage to the turf. He left, went home, posted the above on Facebook, grabbed his dad's gun and went back to the school.
Right now there's a lot of people blaming the kid's dad, the school administration and whatever else they think can make them justify what happened. But this kid messed up and didn't know how to handle it. I don't know why he did what he did and I doubt anyone ever will. But he deserves our thoughts as much as the others.

Robert was charismatic and outgoing. He worked with children, gave his all for his friends, and he was always smiling. He did whatever he could to help people. It's so difficult to believe that such a sweet boy could do such a horrible thing.

He walked into the school, shot Dr. Kasper in the head first, and then shot Dr. Case. He then fired a random shot down the main hall way and proceeded to flee the scene.
Dad informed you all of their conditions, I believe, but now it's being said that they aren't sure if Dr. Kasper will make it.
Thankfully, nobody else was injured.
We still have school tomorrow, as far as we all know. Students and teachers should soon be able to pick up their cars and take them home.

Such a tragic event made even more tragic by the loss of life and the fact that we will probably never know the full reasons the kid did what he did. My wishes go out to the families of everyone involved in the incident and I hope they are all able to cope with the situation (at least as well as can be expected given the circumstances).

Obviously Rob Jr.'s actions are nobody's responsibility but his own. I'm not even sure I can fault the father for leaving the weapon accessible, since were I an officer of the law, I would want to make sure my family could defend themselves if someone with a grudge against me (or my position) came knocking at/in my door and I was not at home. It's a shame he decided not to face up to his actions. I honestly don't know why he would've thought this was something worthwhile enough to throw away his life. If he were going to sacrifice himself, I would've hoped it would be for something more meaningful than mitigating his own embarrassment, and not in a way which brought suspicion and dishonor on his family.
I know some of the above may sound a bit...cold, but I just can't think of someone deciding to sacrifice themselves for anything that wasn't undeniably Epic (at least to them) in nature, and certainly not spur-of-the-moment. I almost wonder if his intended target was really his father, and the school was merely the billboard upon which he decided to write his message.

That's horrible. Something like this will always leave people with more questions than answers. Sadly those questions will never be answered.
I am at a loss of words on what to say during something such as this. It always rings hollow to me and never feels like enough. I can't know how you feel, I can't understand the pain you must be feeling for the loss of a friend and Principals you've no doubt seen in the hallway all the time. All I can say is I send my sympathies and hope you and their families never experience a tragedy like this again.

High school is a tough time, but there's never an excuse for this.
More and more we need to teach the younger generation that things get better. High school is when you first really start to notice the bullshit all around you and how life is not and never will be fair and so it seems like a really challenging time. I don't know what all this kid was dealing with besides his suspension but I wish he had known that his problems won't mean a thing latter on in life.

Oh, no.... I'm so thankful that your daughter is safe, but I'm so sorry for the him. I'll say a prayer for his family tonight. I hope that his family has lots of love and support around them in this difficult time. You guys have a restful day tomorrow. I'm so sorry y'all had to go through this.

Dude, any problem that makes you shoot someone and then kill yourself is either way more serious then a suspension or the result of some mental illness... not likely to just go away after high school is over.
I disagree, to a point. Obviously there will always be people who are just messed up for whatever reason and there's not much anyone can do with them. I'm not convinced this kid, or most kids that age are like that. If what Sammi says is true and he helped younger kids a lot and was a generally good kid then I'm thinking he just got to some breaking point that only seems as bleak as it is because you're in high school and everything is more dramatic when you're 18.
Maybe he was a bad kid at home, and this suspension meant getting kicked out of his home. Or maybe he was really good and this was the most trouble he'd ever been in and he feared an extreme punishment from his parents. I don't know him, his parents or anyone involved so I can't say. I'm just saying that I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to this then him having some kind of go crazy and kill yourself and others "mental illness"

I'm in no shape or fashion qualified to even guess what was going through this young man's head when he picked up the gun. If anyone here is, it's likely Sammi herself. She knew him, and by the way you wrote, Sammi, it sounds like you too were pretty shook up by all this. Not just because of the shooting, but because it was someone you knew and apparently considered a friend.
I can't even begin to fathom what that must feel like. But if you ever need someone to talk to... well, your dad's got a bunch of us weirdos here, all ready to lend a shoulder to lean on and an ear for listening.
