Board game suggestions!

My wife and I are wanting to start up a game night. We have a couple of decent board games, but we are sorely lacking in anything really cool and different.

What we have:
-Axis and Allies
-Risk
-Mancala
-Chess/checkers
-Trivial Pursuit
-Scrabble
-Cards/dice

We want something that is fun for 2 - 6 people. Any suggestions (besides video games) would be appreciated. They don't have to be board games. We do like card games too. Thanks all!

If you've got 6-8 friends with loads and loads of patience you should check out Twilight Imperium. It's an awesome, intense game but they do tend to run looooong.

Oh! It's a card game rather than a board game but Munchkin is always loads of fun. It's got a ton of versions out now from regular fantasy, to cowboys, pirates, chop sockey movies, sci-fi, and even horror. Mixing two or more different decks will allow you to play with more and more people.

Crokinole!
Cranium
Dominoes
I could teach you how to play Sweeps/Scopa/Scopone

Or if you hate your family and friends you could try

Ubi
Monopoly
Mercanauts

We've got Cthulhu munchkin here at the house. Always good for some fun :)

Girl Genius: The Works is a pretty fun card game. Granted luck plays a pretty big role in it but it is fun none the less.

I have only played the XBLA version of it but The Settlers of Catan is a great board game.
Can that be played with just 2 players? I've heard a lot about it, but I haven't played it yet.

Sounds interesting. I'll check it out.[/QUOTE]

On the XBLA version you needed at least 3 people

Cranium is loads of fun. We play that a lot at my folks' place.

Yeah, I thought so. That's keeping me from snatching it up right away, but it's certainly on the list.

I'll have to look into that. Thanks, BD.

I recommend both Small World and Stone Age as simply, strategic games that are pretty fun with 2-5 and 2-4 players respectively. They don't run too long (45min to an hour) and are easy enough to pick up but take some time to really learn the dynamics of. Additionally, Board Game Geek (to which both of the previous links go) is the place to see reviews and ratings for all board games. They will tend to prefer those that require a little more strategy over party games, but you can read the descriptions to get a good sense of each game's flavor.

Thanks MD. I'll check those out too! That site should be quite useful.

Munchkins!!! even my wife who is NOT a roleplayer (tabletop version) loves it. It is fun stuff for the whole family.

Fluxx - a great card game that never plays the same twice. All you have to do is follow the rules on the cards.

Apples to Apples - very fun, but only good for 4+ people.

Woo! Much love to Apples to Apples on this board!

Puerto Rico is fun.

Dominion is awesome, if a card game more than a board game.

Here's my list thus far (from suggestions and my own searching):

In no particular order

-Pandemic
-Zombies
-Munchkins
-Stone Age
-The Farming Game
-Settlers of Cattan
-Dominion
-Fluxx

Keep bringing the suggestions!

I like Carcassonne and Citadels. Citadels is a very, very easy to get into card game and it's loads of fun.

I like King's Blood. It's like Uno with combos.
Fluxx is a lot of fun. There are multiple versions available. One of the more entertaining ones is Stoner Fluxx.
Ticket to Ride is a lot of fun. You build railroad routes across the continental US.

BANG- this ones a great crowd pleaser. It's best played with 4 or more but the goal is simple. Kill someone. Well technically WHO you kill depends on what Role you draw. There is the Sheriff who needs to kill the Outlaws and the Renegade, the Deputy who needs to keep the Sheriff alive, the Outlaws who need to kill the Sheriff, and the Renegade who needs to be the last man standing. The game is played only using a deck of cards that consist of Bang cards (shoot), missed cards, items, and events. Oh, and when the game begins you only know who the Sheriff is. You have to kill another player for them to reveal their role. Usually this means that the outlaws will be gunning for the Sheriff, and the Deputy and the Renegade will be gunning for the Outlaws (the renegade MUST kill the Sheriff last or the Outlaws win even if they are dead), and the Sheriff is trying to figure out who his Deputy is while he takes the majority of the fire and defends himself.

Each player also randomly draws a character that comes with a special power. One allows you to draw a card whenever you are hit, one that allows you to heal if you discard cards from your hand, etc.

Your placement at the table also limits your ability to shoot other players. Everyone starts with a weapon with a range of 1. A 1 allows you to attack the people on each side of you. But you'll need a 2 to hit the next person around the table, and so on. A lot of items can help you achieve this, but there are a lot of items that can increase your range away from people as well (such as the Mustang). Killing the person next to you also reduces the range on the next person in line by 1 (because he's no longer in the game).

And once you start to lose interest in the game you can get expansion packs that add additional cards, characters, and increases the max number of players from 7 to 8 (an extra Renegade is added to the game).

Games usually last about 20 min each, and there isn't a lot of setup/cleanup involved.

Race for the Galaxy: It's a bit tricky to learn, but great fun. It's also pretty short (30 min-1h), with very little set up time so you can so you can fit in several games. Base game is 2-4, each expansion adds an additional player.

Settlers of Catan: Also pretty short (1-1.5 hours), and probably easier to explain than RftG. Be wary of the expansions: Seafarers is fine, but Cities and Knights transforms it into an epic 3+h game in my experience. Needs 3+ players though.

Carcasonne: 2+ tile placement game. You place the tiles, put meeple on a feature in the tile and collect points once you complete the road/city/whatever. Also goes pretty quickly. You should use the new scoring system, available on the intertubes, since it's more balanced and easier to understand. There are also too many expansions for this; I've only played the base game.

-Fireball Island (though long out of print). It's my all time favourite board game.
-Mwa-ha-ha. Bit of a steep learning curve but a LOT of fun once everyone gets it.
-Pandemic. Really neat game, which I call the reverse Risk. Instead of playing against each other, you actually all work together to stop a virus to destroying the world.
