It is a good idea. Besides, since when do you of all people care about another's feelings.

It is a better indicator of how a person stands within the community than the join date, or post count.
Who knows, it may cause posters to become more helpful, knowing that they can flaunt their karma as a new e-peen.

She's just bitching because I gave her negative karma in another thread.

I like the idea of it, but I don't think I'm popular enough to be rated positively or negatively, and I'm not going to lie: my self-esteem gets affected by shit like that. You have no idea how happy I am when people respond to my posts, or laugh at my jokes. It's almost enough for me to generate some stupid-ass persona like others on the forum have, just for the validation. But I don't want to be a jackass. I just want to be noticed.

Wow, this turned into a manbaww. About the internet, too. Is there any worse? Perhaps it's pathetic, but it's my $.02

Also, I suspect what'll happen anyways is that there will be a lot more negatively rated people than positively. Even putting grudges and shticks aside, people are much less likely to recognize a good post than a bad one.

So while I like the idea, I doubt very much in it's execution.

I pretty much agree with Rob King.

Don't see the point either. Reading the forums has always been enough for me to see how people stand in the community.

Well, for example, I just agreed with Charlie of all people in a thread.
Then, I gave him good karma. End of story.
Like I said, I think that people will be more friendly/helpful if they know that everyone else is looking at their karma.
Some of these jackasses will tone it down when they notice that they have -9001 karma.

I, for one, will give you karma if laugh at one of your jokes. You have my sword.

actually, I dont give a fuck if anyone gives me bad rep. God knows I probably earned it. but I just think it's a shitty way to snipe at people. If a dozen fucktards harsh on a newbie who posts for example, it could discourage them, thereby driving membership down.

and the only negative rep Ive given out is to Shego, as a test. I figure she won't hate me for it.

I've only given out neg rep to you, 'cause I know you don't care.
So far, I've given pos rep to RK,Ed,Charlie and I think Susan.

I swear if I start getting some "positive" rep it's going to be all half-eaten baby pictures and goatsecx.
Shouldn't have said that.

Can't say I've honestly ever looked at the rep ratings on any board I've ever been a part of....didn't even notice it was active here until seeing this thread....

Take that as a ....I dunno....a big 'ole "I don't give a fuck"?

Its only been enabled for 10 minutes.

Uh.. I got reputation now but it didn't tell me who gave it or for what.... that sort of defeats the whole point, doesn't it?

Or is there a "karma" section that breaks that info down somewhere I'm not noticing?

I think that is a good thing, so that you don't get into a karma war with people.

---------- Post added at 03:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:22 PM ----------

Maybe set it so that you can see the comments people leave with it,and for what posts, but not their names.

But then how will you know what you're being rewarded/punished for?

My rep could skyrocket cause of a contribution on a subforum somewhere on the same day I get in a huge flamefest with someone or something, and then I'd be all "..do people really like it that much when I'm flaming?!"

or something

I have 9 now.

Someone, dunno who, said, and I quote "i DISAPROV" about a post I made on doomdragon's chicken biscuit thread.

I'm torn up about it, as I'm sure you can tell.

I am not a big fan of the rep. I have seen other boards where people either purposefully tried to get bad rep and some people used the rep to try and force people to not post certain thing or at least use it as leverage.

Ok.. I have gotten a few more votes on the rep thing and I think I figured something out.

If someone with zero Rep Power reps you, it doesn't count, it's a grey dot in your rep's notification area in the UserCP, but doesn't give you points. It's just when the rep they give you is a golden square that you get the +10 to rep.

Isn't all this explained in the mod page, turbo? I feel like we're playing archaeologists here.

He himself doesn't know what the Rep Power: x @ x means, which makes me think... he found no explanation?

My guess is that the number before the @ is how many "reps" you have to give, and the number after is your actual rep points. you get +10 for every "I approve" and -1 for every "I disapprove".

I'm all detective-y.

My bet is that most people won't notice it or won't want to be bothered with it, at least at first.

Then, it shall become a weapon of fear and intimidation, and Gasbandit will be pleased.

C

Cuyval Dar

No, it will be used as a tool of the Light Side, not a weapon of hatred.

What does it actually do, anyway? Besides giving you grey or green dot under your avatar. Because if that's all it does, it seems a bit useless to me.

C

Ok, lets say that someone answers a question, helps you with a problem, post something that made you rofl for hours. You give them positive rep.

By the same token, if someone is being a raging jackass, you give them negative rep. Others notice it (Especially newcomers) and think, well, this guy must be an asshole to have -9001 rep, so I'll take what he say with a grain of salt.

Oh, no, we're crossing our wires.

Rep is the little rectangles on the bottom, where it says "rep power" the bars above your avatar are this little "experience" thing Dave is trying out. It gives points for active participation and shit.
