[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

Kurtz is not wrong about Twitter being awful. I'm not sure how you get "Twitter is a he?" from that.
@DarkAudit replied with: Twitter or the comic?

I read that as: Twitter or the comic (is not wrong)?

Buuuut....now I see he meant it to be: Twitter (has gotten better) or the comic (has gotten better)?

Which makes even less sense to me, since I didn't see any ambiguity there to question in the first place.

Can we still make a statement about how funny it is that Scott needs help with his comic at a time when he literally can’t leave his house?

Eh, I think I read something that he’s had some family problems that he’s been struggling with. Seems like a bad time for that.

Scott has been taking care of his father since last year, even moving him out to Seattle to live with him after his father suffered a second stroke that made it so he couldn't live on his own anymore. Scott even made a comic or two about his struggles with it.

Scott has been missing a lot of update days and I completely understand why.

I can't think of the last time a webcomic I followed had guest strips. Granted, I only still actively follow 5 webcomics at this point (though I check up on PvP every month to read the new strip*), but still, that seems like a relic of the past.

*I dont feel bad making jokes about his irregular update schedule since it was like this way before anything happened with his dad.

Oh I get it, I actually am not surprised he hasn't updated Table Titans or Binwin's Minions for around a month now because I find his interest always sort of wanes on his side comic projects, let alone with a big family issue to take care of.

PVP however? He usually is pretty decent about at least getting one or two updates a week on it, but there was a few weeks where he didn't have any update at all this year. Shows how hard it must be these days.

Incidentally, of the webcomics I still follow, all but one has a super reliable update schedule. I guess I just don't have much patience for "will there be a strip today? Who knows?"

I give Scott all the leeway on this. Being the caregiver for a family member who is on the way out is fucking tiring.

I don't even thing he's responsible for Binwin's and Table Titans any more. Isn't that written and drawn by different teams?

Can I play devil's advocate here and wonder aloud how long Scott's actually needed to be the "caregiver" in the family?

I think one or two of the webcomics I follow will do this, but it's usually when they finish a chapter, and they'll post a couple of guest strips or even fan art before they start the next chapter.

Least I Could Do updates EVERY day. And I don't think they've missed any updates in years.

I was a big fan of Table Titans, but he hasn't updated that since January. Granted, he has a lot of other things to do right now. And I get to read it for free so I really can't complain.

The worst is Zombie Hunters. The creator didn't update for over a year because of severe depression, and she didn't print the second book for a long time despite many people already paying for it. She went back up for a few more months but then "fell into the depression hole again" and hasn't updated for nearly two years. Fans who have tried to ask her about it on Twitter get blocked.

I will say, doing those strips actually gave me the itch to go back to comic strips. I know my new plan was to do something more along the line of a comic page format, but there’s just something about four panels.

Plus, I figured out a way to get clearer art and letter the strips with differently. I kind of want to do a different project next now. If I do go that direction, I could be up and running with that in a couple weeks.

So Scott just announced he’s launching a revamped PvP on Monday. Unless he’s posting guest strips over the weekend...I guess I’m not making the cut. That’s disappointing.

So anyway, here’s what I sent him.

Hopefully not because you misspelled "Sesame."
I love the punchline, btw. And thank you for doing at least one B&W frame. :D

Is this a full on reboot? I can't imagine Kurtz tossing aside the main cast, but it's interesting that he's throwing in these new people who've never shown up in the office before.

...And exactly what point in PVP was 2.0? The 2008 wedding?

I think PvP V1.0 was back when Jade looked like this.

And then V2.0 happened in June 1999, when Scott put the strip on haitus for a few days with images like:

And 2.0 has lasted until now, when he's moving on to 3.0.

And I just realized that image up there says V.20.

Also I just realized that since PvP started in 1998, the comic has, in fact, reached 20 years.

Did Scott out Francis?
He barely acknowledged the 20th anniversary. I think he later posted a news blog that he didn't even realize it had come and gone. But I think he's been distracted with taking care of his dad since at least 2018.

Man, feels kinda weird he just kinda ended PvP and the characters he's been writing for over 20 years without even the slightest attempt at an ending.

Well, I think they'll still be there - he's just re-starting with a "fresh set of eyes" - looking at the cast from the perspective of a new student arrival...Which is why Francis suddenly looks older (along with a time jump to skip the quarantine), assuming that guy is Francis.
I think the stereotypes on which PvP was built are sort of worn out; the Mac Guy from the '90s was a weirdo, and not at all the same as the iZombie of today. Francis as the camper-gamer still exists, but since he's aged it doesn't fit him anymore - and Scott never really managed to transition him into something new. Etc etc. Brent and Cole don't go on wacky adventures anymore, they're old and tired. Francis and Macy are realistically as old as Brent and Jade were when it all started - or older.
A new perspective, a few new characters, and keeping the old cast as the background for a new generation of hijinks might just work. Scott doesn't really get the trust to pull it off easily, but I'll be a naive idiot and give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

NGL I didn't realize that was francis.

Also I'm realizing that girl in the first comic is probably Brent and Jade's daughter.

We're going full Funky Winkerbean.

To be fair, I can't guarantee that it's Francis - it's just what the art makes me think. And yes, that might well be Jade and Brent's daughter...Though one would think she wouldn't need to have a meeting with Francis to get in.
I'm just guessing, based on a full three strips, of course. It just looks like an older Francis slowly morphing into Cole for the next generation, is all.
