Rant VIII: The Reckoning

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

The last time I saw my aunt was when I visited her at home, while she was recovering from her first operation. There were a whole bunch of other visitors there, all of them giving their share of advice and trying to help out. I tried to just stay in the background and keep her company. During a lull in the activity, she turned to me and said, "How the hell did things end up like this?" And that was it, that was the last thing I heard her say.

Be excellent to each other, my good forumites. For you never know when things may abruptly change.

dad went from stomach pain to gone from cancer in 45 days. if you dont think I did some growing up that summer, prepare to be surprised. I can write volumes about my transformation from tough guy pretender to serious contender for "alpha male" of my circle in that span of time. I feel you bhamv, life is short, dont waste your energy on the petty stuff.

My dad broke his hip in December of 2011. He went into the hospital and never came out. I know exactly how you feel, @bhamv3 and it sucks. Sorry to hear that.

So my mom has had back and hip pain for a long time. She was supposed to have a second hip surgery right before everything got cancelled, but she's been pretty much couch ridden and playing Animal Crossing instead. My dad just called and said they had to call an ambulance because her legs and arms went numb and she couldn't move at all. He couldn't go with her, but now I have to worry about both her actual health problems AND the fact that she had to go to the hospital during a pandemic. So fuck.

They apparently gave her a bunch of drugs and are sending her back home because they don't want her staying in the hospital. I'm sure she'll tell me later what they gave her, my dad didn't specify.

So I never got updated again yesterday, I assumed my mom got a steroid shot and was sent home, but apparently according to the text I got while I was still sleeping, she went back in to the hospital for back surgery? 0_0

If its any consolation, the hospital system around here is still holding up relatively OK and we're expected to be a week or two away from shit really hitting the fan, so now is a good time for her to get surgery.

My dad says she might have to stay there for a couple of days, so I fucking hope so.

So apparently, they had her come in for surgery, then while she was there they denied surgery and sent her back home because she can still sort of function. She apparently almost passes out just trying to pee, but it's not enough to justify it until she literally cannot function. Which, by the time that happens, I really will have to panic about her going near a hospital.

My brother was taken my ambulance to the ER about an hour ago.

So, he was sick a couple weeks ago, got tested for COVID-19, tested negative, been having headaches, and then parts of one side of his body was getting numb. He's fairly recent Type I diabetes diagnosed, so he thought it was his blood sugar. His tester said sugars were normal, so he though maybe its more serious, so he went to the ER a couple days ago. He was sitting there until 4am, and they did a bunch of tests, including a scan of his brain (CT scan), and everything was fine. Apparently, in the last 30 minutes, he was on the phone with one of his patients and he couldn't finish his sentence or talk, so my mom (who is up there watching his kid) and his wife called 911. I talk with his wife, who is also a doctor, and she said it honestly looked like a stroke, but he really doesn't have the risk factors for it. Blood stick before he went into the ambulance showed over 100, so it doesn't seem sugar related. She also said he seemed confused and kept repeating "I feel numb". She couldnt go with him on the ambulance because of the virus, so now we just kind of have to wait to see what they say.

My mom just had her 3rd serious fall. I don't know how serious it is. But I don't even know if I can go up there with the corona virus situation. An 81 year old going into the emergency room during this time is scary. Luckily there are only a handful cases during this time.

Shaker and Terrik, I feel you guys SO hard. My 93-year-old grandma had to go to the emergency room last week with stroke-like symptoms (turned out to be a UTI and she's fine and back home, thank every god out there, I'm not picky). I live 6 hours away, and my now 94-year-old grandpa couldn't even go with her. Like, I understand why, but they've been married 69 years and for a while it looked like they wouldn't even be together for the end...

She was quarantining in their appartment (retirement home, one of the really fancy ones with all the amenities) when she got back of course, and now a staff member tested positive, so EVERYBODY's quarantining. At least they're together now.

Hephaestos is happy and pleased with your gratitude ;)

More seriously, glad she's okay for now and they're together.

The hospital called and think it might be a brain infection. They're probably moving him to the ICU. They're still waiting on the results of the lumbar puncture they did.
