Well, sure, because, you know, the war was (mainly) about slavery. I'm not denying that, but then again, I'm not propping up the Confederate flag, either. I'm just saying that you don't have to be some kind of genius or expert to be able to think of something. I'm pretty sure the interviewer would've accepted "state's rights" as a valid answer, even if it amounts to much of the same. I mean, I can easily give you "five good things about Hitler", "five reasons for WWII", "five reasons why Israel is right to blockade Gaza", "five reasons why the Palestinians are right to fight Israel",...it's not that difficult. If it's something you supposedly feel strongly about, I'd hope for some insight, even if it's superficial and doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
