Former President Trump Thread

I thought they were trying to put in a provision that essentially made the reclassification read-only, and prevented the FCC from ever reclassifying it again?

Yeah, that.

--Patrick
Until somebody decides that it doesn't. Seriously, nothing in government is read-only anymore.

If what happened in Virginia happens across the country, they'll make Net Neutrality a freaking Amendment.

I mean, it won't, but it would be nice.

Edit for Clarity: Massive Democrat gains happened in Virginia. There's a few still up in the air, but they might take the majority in the statehouse.

I'm not sure where else to put this sooooo what do you guys think of this thing happening in Colorado? Does it have a chance?
I wouldn't bet against it in colorado. Given enough time, it could even spread further. But I wouldn't be surprised if this forces some kind of constitutional crisis when the cable/telecoms try to find a way to get their federal puppets to squash the Municipal ISPs through some form of blatantly-10th-amendment-violating measure.

It's happening specifically because the city right near me did it and it was wildly successful. They have the fastest internet speeds in the county and for half the price of Comcast. Comcast literally has tables in stores with people who do nothing but try to convince people that they are better while everyone points and laughs at them.

It's already happening, has been happening. As a resident of one of the twenty-one states (so far) that currently have some sort of ban in place against publicly-owned Internet infrastructure, I already know this all too well. Here's an excerpt from the latest in my home state of MI:
A freshman Michigan state representative introduced a sweeping bill last week that would ban any city and town in the state from using public funds to provide municipal broadband service — publicly owned internet infrastructure. [...HB 5099] says that a city or town “shall not use any federal, state, or local funds or loans to pay for the cost of providing qualified internet service,” effectively banning municipal broadband outright. However, it provides an exception for public-private partnerships.
...so basically, a city can't raise and spend its own money to build its own network, but it CAN raise and spend its own money to build a network for someone else. How charitable!
Investigation usually shows these pieces of legislation tend to be written by the telecom itself and then handed over to whichever lawmaker has been incentivized to put them in place.

This was the whole reason that the FCC pulled the Title II thing in the first place, to get around these laws, and probably why the current administration wants that classification removed, so they can go back to having their "It's only okay when WE do it" guaranteed oligopoly back.

Longmont had that law, it took them several tries to repeal it, thanks to the amount of money Comcast threw into propaganda.

At least one of the linked articles breaks down the cost, explaining that it's cheaper to hire lobbyists and throw a couple of million dollars at politicians than it is to actually go out and upgrade equipment.

Oh, and AT&T/Comcast just won a ruling that makes it harder for anyone to compete with incumbents in Nashville, which is going to make Google unhappy. Google can no longer take advantage of the "One Touch Make Ready" rule that was put in place so only one truck would be needed to make adjustments to the wiring on poles. Now the judge's ruling puts things back to the way they were, where each individual company has to come and make any adjustments to their own stuff, kind of like most labor union jokes go. And this means that trying to do anything will be a scheduling nightmare and the incumbents will no doubt find some reason to delay coming out to move their stuff which while technically not prohibiting Google from coming in will certainly delay it for ... who really knows how long? As long as they can get away with it, that's for sure.

... why? Just, why? Why even make it up? Does he not have enough to do? I know his supporters will eat up his first comment and never even hear about Time's response, but this doesn't seem to have any benefit one way or the other. It's just pointless noise.

He loses his fucking mind over Time's Person of the Year every year.

He gets fake Time covers made with himself on them to hang in his establishments.

He's mentally ill.

He's the president of the United States.

I still can't believe there are people who approve of this guy.

Trump calls Warren 'Pocahontas' at event honoring Native American veterans
We were discussing that at work today. The context of the conversation was that he is ramping up his efforts to deliberately get himself impeached so that Pence can be President, like he is just some kind of orange sabot wrapper for a Pence presidency. And he’s getting more and more outrageous because everyone thought someone would’ve either impeached or assassinated him by now, but they’re running behind schedule.

Conspiracy theories seem more plausible to the party not in power.

Until the Republican party as a whole comes out and condemns Trump as a flaming asshole, I just have to assume that having tact is a partisan thing now. :p

The only thing that gives me hope is that Senate Republicans were talking about unseating Moore if he wins. Unfortunately, talk is cheap.

I am at a loss as to why some people don't understand how the "Pocahontas" thing was racist. I mean come on, he used the name in a clearly derogatory fashion toward another person, thereby affixing a negative meaning to it right in front of the people he intended it to represent! Why not call the Black Panthers up and refer to Warren as "Shaniqua" in front of them while implying that doing so was an insult.

They totally understand that it was and they either (a) feel the same racist way and don't give a shit or (b) can't admit that their side is racist as fuck.
