Random Video Game Crap

Okay, what the hell? I just tried playing a game, but when I clicked on the shortcut on my desktop, it asked me what program to use to open it. It says it's a URL file. But this game - Dead Rising - I've played multiple times and used that exact same shortcut. Why is it suddenly doing this?

And of course, being an idiot, I thought I'd just find the Dead Rising launch file and use that. So now ALL my game shortcuts are the Dead Rising icon. Fucking hell.
Steam shortcuts are actually URL files. They usually contain an address like "steam://rungameid/3544734", but if something's gone wrong with how your computer checks URLs it might not know that the "steam" protocol goes to the steam browser.

I found the fix: when choosing an app, choose open with "internet browser." I set that to the default and all the icons returned the normal.

No idea how or why that screwed up in the first place.

Are you running windows 10? I've noticed a lot of people complaining about their steam shortcuts getting messed up by windows updates.

Did you choose to open the link with Dead Rising's executable when you first were given the option? That would explain why they all changed to Dead Rising, it was associating all Steam URLs with that program and getting very confused.

Jim Sterling has a new series called Commentocracy. He did a segment with this aristocrat character on The Jimquisition, but now it's its own thing.

It's hilarious, but I'm not sure if it'll work as its own thing on a regular basis.

Reminds me of Console Peasant Quotes from Bullet Barry (which, despite the name, also highlights elitist PC quotes as well. He tried renaming the series "Fanti-consumer quotes" but I'm assuming not enough people understood the portmanteau of Fan and Anti-consumer). I do like that Jim isn't bothering to explain why each comment is wrong. One thing that keeps me from fully enjoying Barry's videos is that he over-explains the joke.

It also reminds me of Gamespot's Feedbackula, which I enjoyed quite a bit. I may be biased since they featured my comments a few times. Like this! (I'm RedWave247):

I decided to pick up a steam link while it was on sale for super cheap. Once it finally shipped and arrived, I tried it out over wifi and it... sucked. At least on my wifi network, it was laggy and unresponsive.

So, after spending $5 for 50 feet of ethernet cable on amazon, the steam link is now hard wired, and holy shit it works great. I'm thoroughly impressed with how good it looks, and how good it performs, with a rocksolid fps and no stutter or input lag.

I don't play many steam games that use a controller, but when I do, I love that I can do so on my TV while sitting on the couch.

I did the same, except my router is 5 feet from the Link (the only cable access point is in the living room, so all our PCs are on wireless cards because I can't drill into this house). It's faaaantastic. Specially fond of running Kodi as a steam app.

My Dad helped me run Cat 6 throughout my house within a month of getting it. The only reason there's a wireless repeater in my entertainment room is for the Chromecast. Everything else that can be on the wire, is on the wire. And I have Gigabit Fibre to the house.

:)

Would love to do both of those here (working from home on the wi-fi is inconvenient at times, and extra speed never hurts). However, we can't fit fibre into our budget (yet), and won't be able to run wire in this house. The next one, though...

Listen, effeminate boys traipsing around the world carrying swords is no basis for a standard of how our kids should behave.

Is it called Cryengine just because it makes programmers cry?
Also where is Bethesda's Creation Engine or Assassin's Creed's Anvil? Where are my glitches, dangit?

Those aren't one of the common "licensable" engines, AFAIK. Unity, Unreal, and CryEngine are all meant to be go-to engines for licensing, whereas the other ones are in-house proprietary engines.

That said, they did leave out Gamebryo... probably because Gamebryo hasn't seen a major PC release since Rift. But Creation Engine is mostly Gamebryo with extensions to push it past its limitations.

Now that I'm playing MGSV, I really wish that Konami would just sell off the Fox Engine, because gat-damn that's a beautiful, extremely optimized engine.

This made me wonder what a Source Engine game would look like these days, which led to me looking up Source Engine games, which in turn led to me learning that Titanfall and Titanfall 2 were made in Source. I did not know that.

I know because of NDA that there is a AAA franchise with yearly releases that's on a HEAVILY modified Quake ONE engine.

Think on that and be horrified.

Everquest, yes, the first one, just put out its TWENTY FOURTH expansion. THAT is a horrifying thought.[DOUBLEPOST=1506440146,1506439851][/DOUBLEPOST]Dave has gifted me with Forced: Slightly Better Edition. Thanks @Dave!

Yeah, I had 2 that were just taking up space. And since it's a coop game and Dei already had a copy, I figured you'd play it. Then I randomized my friend list and gave the other to someone else. Don't remember who, though. Stupid old guy memory.
