Comic Book News

Marvel's current time travel nonsense makes what the Berlantiverse does look sensical.

I mean really, HOW many young X-men from alternate timelines are there now?!

Soooooooooooooo not only is Lauren Faust directing but JESSICA CRUZ is in this?! FUCK YES!
I'm really glad they're continuing this series. It's been a big hit with the little girls around here. One of them told me the other day that she "really likes [my] hair because it's orange like Batgirl's!"
It's nice to have a current-day Super Friends that has more than just a token woman character (not counting Jayna or Wendy).

"It's not time travel."

Except solicits already say it is. -_-

Also "yeah we're also celebrating Jack Kirby, if you like variant covers."
Never believe anything that comes out of Axel Alonso mouth. At least if the solicits are inaccurate the books retailers can get the books returned.

Can't wait to see the time travel characters suddenly finding themselves 40 years in the past instead of the 4 it probably would be in the Marvel timeline. *sigh*

No kidding. The Jean Gray one flat-out says she goes back in time. Not sure how that makes sense post-Secret Wars; that was Marvel's equivalent of a DC Crisis.

August's solicits leave me nonplussed. There's so little of interest, meanwhile I have to restrain myself from pulling too many DC titles.

Oh sweet gods, I hate Marvel Legacy already.

I mean, how can't I get excited with suck wonderful quotes as

Brevoort: " No character, no franchise will be untouched by the game-changing events that play out across its pages."

I can't wait to see Squirrel Girl's cosmic placement. I'm sure Ryan North will have a blast parodying that bullshit if it's foisted on his title.

Alonso: "Not only will this be the catalyst for Marvel evolving and moving forward, but expect it to be the spark that will ignite the industry as a whole."

:pud: Uh-huh.

DC September solicits ring in the Dark Days/Nights event.

At this point DC is almost making fun of the New 52. You know how they tried to make everything dark and gritty and "more like Batman because Batman sells"?

Well the evil invading universe has superhumans, each getting a one-shot, and essentially it's Batmanized Wonder Woman, Batmanized Aquaman, etc. :D I won't be buying them all, but I think this is pretty funny.

Something something they're copying the Rikti invasion from City of Heroes.

And now I have a sad because I miss that game.

It was just as much fun to hang around Atlas Park and read the origin stories of passing heroes.

I tried and failed to trigger the copyright police on a couple of my characters. I guess Ambush Bug and Captain Marbles were a little too obscure to be worth the bother.

There were way too many hordes of would-be-wolverines to swat down to be worried about 3rd stringers :p

Marvel's industry shattering event is ... another relaunch! Yeah, that's about it.

Marvel, DC was fading out and needed a light, but you guys are burning yourselves. You can't put out a fire by lighting another fire.

DC put out the list of main event issues, one-shots, and tie-ins for Dark Nights: Metal.

This is pretty handy--I wonder if I could print this out and hand it to by LCBS, thus avoiding getting my pull saddled with more of the one-shots than I want just because I'm subscribed to the main Batman title.

The tie-in count is tiny and the one-shots can be ignored, though there a couple of them I do want. I don't see why this has to go into 2018, but my guess is because DC has said that you only need to read the main event, and the way to make that easy on wallets is if it only costs you $5 a month. That said, they skip an issue in November--I just have a hard time seeing it hold interest from June 2017 to February 2018 unless it's a truly amazing series.

There's something about this event that feels like it should have been released in the late 80's or early 90's. It's hard to think about "Metal" anymore without picturing Ozzy sadly shuffling his way across a stage.

Report back once you start reading it. I'm curious, but maybe not enough to pick it up myself.

Someone at DC is definitely a fan of recent retro movements. It does feel like a 90s branding event, though the meta of it couldn't exist without DC today being like "hey, we ALSO hated the New 52, and to prove it we're making a universe of that kind of character the antagonists for a Rebirth event!"

I think I'll make a new thread for this. I can at least see myself reading through this entirely, unlike a certain event that is a secret :p.

...being like "hey, we ALSO hated the New 52...
Slightly off-topic, but I got the TPBs of the beginning of Rucka's run on Wonder Woman, and it feels like this was the first message he wrote. :D (Refering to her splintered "memories" and how some of them maybe aren't true, hint hint, Nu52 crap origin). I need to catch up on the rest to see if he rectified it.

One thing that still bugs me about the New 52 and current universe (Christ, so many reboots in such a short time) is Barbara Gordon is still Batgirl. It bugged me at the start of Nu52 that she wasn't Oracle again. I felt being Oracle defined her better than Batgirl ever did because they took a horrible, fridging-like moment for the character and made her one of the most interesting, and inspirational characters in the DCU.

EDIT: I should add that I feel a bit monstrous putting someone back in a wheelchair. But I found her infinitely more interesting as Oracle than as Batgirl.

That's the conundrum. Now that they've taken her out of the chair, it'd be even worse putting her back now than it was before because we know better these days. There's a new Oracle in the Birds of Prey title, no idea who it is though.

Random thought: I feel like Tim would make a good Oracle.

It's ok, they're just comic book characters, none of them will actually care.
(I feel like this must be the reasoning behind at least some of the managerial decisions regarding the characters)

Grant Morrison told us that comic books are protrusions of other universes into our own.

But he also told us to engage in synchronized masturbation, so YMMV.

I was tempted to say I wanted to see Grant Morrison and Alan Moore have a "crazy wizard" contest, but first off, Alan Moore would win hands down because, well, Alan Moore, and secondly, they might open doorways that should stay shut.

Bryan Hitch begins his final arc of Justice League in November and will most likely be leaving the book by February 2018.

Fingers crossed for Dan Abnett to take over. He's only doing two monthlies now and it'd be his angle to touch on the lives of each Justice League member. It'd certainly be a memorable run. I'm hoping he'll get the chance.

Am I the only one underwhelmed so far with the San Diego Comic Con news? So far, nothing's really been announced that's got me excited. New season of Young Justice is promising, but I worry too much time has passed and the momentum will be lost. We'll see.

But yeah, nothing's really doing it for me. I mean, Grant Morrison doing ARKHAM ASYLUM 2? Was anyone really clamoring for that?

I think Image has a panel sometime this weekend, so maybe they'll announce some new creator-owned books I can look forward to.
