If I had to pick a classic Batman story that would fit Snyder's grimdark style, I'd probably pick Dark Knight Returns.

But then again, we already had the classic confrontation between Superman and power armored Batman in BvS, and that's the scene that gave us MARTHAAAAAA, so....

We also have the problem that Snyder doesn't know how to tell a story anymore. So giving it to Snyder would likely still be a bad idea. I'm pretty sure Justice League is going to be a mess. What remains to be seen is whether or not it'll be an entertaining mess.

That's just it; they let the filmmakers do what they wanted without guidance or restrictions and the people they hired chose to do boring grimdark shit. That's why Suicide Squad is such a mess; suits finally stepped in to have the movie edited into something fun (too little too late). Not that it'd have been good in its original cut.

There was no DC/WB equivalent to Kevin Feige to guide all these projects, so here we are. It's probably not going to get any better, but I think the DCEU is enough of a shitshow without us making things up.

Buuuut let's play numbers!

At three movies:
Marvel had one good movie and two bad ones.
DC has three bad ones.

End of this year, DC will have five movies. At five movies:
Marvel had two bad movies, one okay movie, and two good ones.
DC will likely have four bad movies and one good one (hopefully but even okay would be an improvement).

I swear, I'm in the minority that thought NONE of the Marvel films were outright bad. Ones not as good as the others? Absolutely. As I've said before, Thor 2, Iron Man 2, and Incredible Hulk populate the bottom of the list. But they're still not bad.

I found Avengers 2 a little tiresome in the second half, and don't feel the need to ever rewatch it.

I was so disappointed in Iron Man 3 I wished it hadn't been made.

I never actually got around to seeing Incredible Hulk.

But all the others I've found to be absolutely riveting.

That's my feeling as well, and why I didn't really feel the need to watch it. Even though it came out after Iron Man, I don't get the feeling it really was "connected" to the MCU, from what those who have seen it have told me.[DOUBLEPOST=1493224739,1493224652][/DOUBLEPOST]WAIT, WAIT, I take it back, I have seen it. That was the one where Tim Roth becomes Abomination, right? I had forgotten all about it. But yeah, everything else I said holds. Doesn't feel connected.

Yeah, Tim Roth was in the 2008 one. And yes, it's not as tightly bound to canon as the rest of the movies are.

Out of the first five, I don't think highly of Iron Man 2 or Incredible Hulk, but neither is bad as the DCEU.

I think it might be more accurate to say that, after 3 movies:

Marvel had a breakout hit followed by two movies that were 'good enough'.

DC started with a movie with seriously mixed critical and fan response followed by two entries that made people question whether the filmmakers actually knew how to make movies.

After 2 more movies:

Marvel had two critical and financial successes.

DC has the one that everyone hopes will be good.

And one that no one is expecting to be any good, but hopefully it won't kill the brand so they can double down on the Batman and, hey, we're going to use the Rock in one of these someday.

Personally, I enjoy most of the Marvel movies. Of the first five, I think Iron Man 2 is disappointing and enjoy the other four quite a bit.

I have mixed feelings on Man of Steel. Taken on its own, it does some things very well. The problem is that it also has several flaws that are hard to get past. And the tone of the movie, while not a deal breaker, feels like a poor fit for Superman.

I really ought to rewatch the Monaco Grand Prix scene from that movie, to see if it was as horrendously irritating as I remember.

I was more frustrated by the 'we're going to do Demon in a Bottle, but not really' and the nonsense around the elemental structure being hidden in the diagram of the Stark Expo.

In other news, rumors are circulating that Robert Zemeckis is being considered to direct the Flash movie. (BleedingCool) While this is nowhere near a done deal, it is encouraging because, much like the recent Joss Whedon deal to head Batgirl, it suggests that Warner Brothers is looking for creative talent that will have a synergy with the source material, rather than try to mold it to fit that persons own style. It's one of the reasons Marvel's Phase 1 worked so well -- 'Who could possibly direct a movie about Captain America set in the 1940's?' 'How about we get the guy who did the Rocketeer?'; 'How can we possibly bring Thor to the big screen with its oversized personalities and fantastic elements?' 'Get Kenneth Branagh.'; 'Who could possible reconcile all of these comic book elements into one movie?' 'Get Joss Whedon.'

It was an interesting take on a frankly thankless role. After Ledger, no one was going to be happy with it. But he seemed like a goddamned psychopath. Was the thug life stuff a little distracting? For a couple of seconds, but I actually liked how he played it. Plus bonus points for giving a hint of the Sid and Nancy sickness that is his relationship with Harley. It was equal parts kind of romantic and completely fucked, which seems about right.

Suicide Squad had some good qualities. I liked Will Smith and Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller was just awesome.

It's the choice of villain that I think made the movie really go off the rails for me. If you have Enchantress as the villain, then why call in the Suicide Squad? I thought their purpose was to do the sneaky and dirty jobs legit heroes can't or won't do. I would think a crazy magic user tearing up a city would be more of a job for Justice League Dark.

I'd probably have a better opinion of Joker if I hadn't heard about Leto's creepy off-screen behavior. Blech.

I caught Incredible Hulk on TV a few days ago. Its CGI has not aged well.

Still though, I agree that even the worst MCU movies are at least solid. Incredible Hulk, Thor 1 and 2, Iron Man 2 and 3, Avengers 2 etc, they all had problems, but I still had fun watching them.

So is Wonder Woman bulletproof or not? And can she fly or not? They keep giving powers and taking them away again. They really want her to be a Superman with breasts but they are just not consistent with how they portray her.
