Ehh... maybe? It's a blurred line: the Klingons took the place of the Romulans in a lot of the story work for TOS because they couldn't afford to keep buying so many damn fake ears on their shoestring budget. So as originally written, it should be the Romulans as the Russians.

This is why, starting with TNG, the Klingons began to adopt more Imperial Japanese and Chinese stuff as the Romulans came to the forefront as the "sneaky, subversive" race they were always meant to be. It was an intentional course correction on Gene's part.

The Romulans were the Chinese, because the Vulcans (who were established as Japanese proxies) are considered a "sister race" to them.

Klingons always were the Russian proxies.

Cardassians as East Germany is a pretty good proxy.

Yeah, this is the lightest this thread has been since ... that subject we're not allowed to talk about.

And not being allowed to talk in this topic about that topic feels sorta meta.

And because they're apparently emotionless, secretive, and isolationists (and yellow fer cryin' out loud).
Klingons always were the Russian proxies.
They're violent, drink to excess, make rash decisions, and are expansionist.

I was never sure what the Cardassians were supposed to represent. They seemed to me an amalgam of various "big brother" type societies more than any specific culture.

Yeah but it was the Klingons who had their "moon-based power plant" explode in ST:V. Remind you of anything?

Star Trek VI. Which caused the economic collapse of the Soviet Union - I mean Klingon Empire. And the "slavic" accents on the Klingons isn't exactly subtle, either.

I mean, shit, Rura Penthe was as direct an analogy for Siberian gulags as you could get without saying, "THIS IS SIBERIAN GULAG IN SPACE."

Worth mentioning. Unbridled capitalism is what they were often supposed to represent, but did it work? Or did they just become a hackneyed plot device?
I... I'm not that much into Star Trek. I know just enough to fake it.

Maybe someone else can give you an answer?

Well, even the Ferengi started getting funny ideas towards the end of DS:9.

Yes, I meant VI. I often forget that V exists. For reasons.

Early in TNG when the Ferengi were supposed to be a serious threat, they were basically unbridled capitalists, exploitative and greedy and cruel. Later on, they became more like international traders and bankers with the "rules of acquisition", which determined the ethics of their businesses and society. Ethical on their terms, if not by other species. The Grand Nagus was less about "ruthless greed" and more about "smart, long term profit" - sure, you may get more for the moment by exploiting and shredding an opportunity, but if you nurture it along, you'll still be making money off it in 10 years, and be able to use it to build more off of. More Warren Buffett and less Gordon Gecko.

As of Star Trek Online... the Ferengi haven't changed a whole lot, but (like American Capitalism) the particulars have changed. Rom (Quark's brother) is still Grand Nagus, but has implemented a council of economists, business leaders, and other thinkers to basically run the Ferengi economy because he simply can't and this has basically kick started a new age of prosperity for the Ferengi. Woman have the right to seek profit now and have equal rights in all other matters. Ferenginar isn't part of the Federation, but there is a program to help members seeking membership in Star Fleet.

Basically, Ferengi Capitalism went the same way American capitalism did.

Wasn't there a Klingon in one of the movies called General Chang? I always thought that was weird.

EDIT: Ah it was VI.

I just remember them being gnomish barbarians when they were introduced in TNG.

Lying about donating to his foundation. Lying about his foundation doing charitable works. Congratulating himself in the third person for something someone else did. And that's just this week.

Have we waited and seen enough?
DarkAudit, I understand you man. I feel you, we're in the same shit, but it's going to be a long 4 years ahead of us. And it's not going to get any better with you constantly saying I told you so, especially when pretty much no one here disagreed with you.

Let's just all choose to suffer together and enjoy the apocalypse.

Don't be ridiculous, there is no way we're all living another 4 years...

The next four years might actually be fairly entertaining. Obama looks like he's just going to spend his post-presidency paying Donald back for the birtherism shit. He made one statement about how he could've won a third term, and it set Trump off for days.

It doesn't take much, and Barack has earned the right to enjoy every minute of it.

You know, all Obama needs to do is get a verified twitter account and just needle Trump once or twice a week and Trump will lose his goddamn mind.
