@blotsfan: Whedon does pretty much the same cheap death of the fan favorite in all of his stuff. Happened with Anya and Fred in Buffy and Angel respectively, most recently with Coluson and Quicksilver in his Avengers movies. Heck he kind of does it multiple times in Buffy, both Tara and Jonathan kick it out of the blue.

I've always figured he's doing it on the off-chance that Paul Verhoeven is fan of the show, and this is Whedon getting his revenge for Dizzy getting killed off instead of that bitch Carmen.

Ah, I never watched any of his stuff before firefly/serenity. And this might be bad, but even right when Coulson died in the first Avengers, I didn't take it seriously. It just felt like disney wouldn't get rid of a character like that.

I know you're referencing Starship Troopers; Dizzy was way better than Carmen; I just don't fucking understand how it connects to Joss Whedon.

See, Whedon was a giant Dizzy fan, was horrendously outraged that she was killed off, and so now he kills off all his fan favorite characters in the hopes that Verhoeven is a fan. It's his comic book plot for revenge
