Minor victory thread

for comparison, this is what a traditional keyless irish flute looks like, typically. This is a Doyle flute, running around $1150+shipping (or 300 euro less without a tuning slide...though why you'd spend that much to buy a flute that can't be tuned is a puzzle to me)

Alistar is at the animal hospital having emergency dental surgery. He started showing some minor discomfort 2-3 days ago when eating and yawing. Doctor takes one look at him and finds a completely infected tooth. She was genuinely surprised that he wasn't running a heavy fever, or showing more distress, but Ali really is the gentle stoic.

Anyway, he's out of surgery now (we can pick him up in 3-ish hours), they removed 4 teeth due to infection/rot, and he'll be on antibiotics. Last time we brought him to the vet they said he was OK mouth-wise, impressive how quick this can happen.

The minor victories are that the vet says we weren't negligent or anything bad, that he went through the operation without issues, that the bloodwork shows he's in (otherwise) great health, and that we can afford all this without stressing about the bill.

Long weekend this week (started today), long weekend next week (Labor Day), and I'm not feeling guilty at all about not being at work.

I'm the proud new mom of a big stuffed JigglyPuff. The kids and I went to a local games store that was full of Pokemon stuffies and had a huge selection of cards for sale, including solo cards. You could buy the specific EXes you wanted.

We always have Pokemon cards in the house, but we usually just buy pre built decks that we can pull out to play against each other once and a while. I still have first release cards here somewhere.

You should check out this Facebook page too. (Assuming the link works)

Ah, the temperature is finally starting to break a little here in Houston. Small animals are no longer spontaneously bursting into flames.

Judging from the forecasts, I think Texas Fall will officially start a week from today, as Sunday will be the last day the high is in the 90s. Starting monday, the highs will be no higher than 89! (That's 31.6 to the parts of the world less civilized)

You can just say 32. theres not so great a difference in 1 degree that we ever need to use fractions.

Not a perfect 5/7?
See, in order to convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius, you subtract 32 and then multiply by 5/9, which also makes an oblique reference to that very meme...
...aww, now look what you've gone and made me do. Now it's not funny any more.

My favourite is when something goes from say 10 degrees C to 20 the talking head tell us the temperature has doubled.

Not really since that would only be true in Kelvin or Rankine since 0 isn't an arbitrary point, but rather the lowest possible temperature.

I just moved into my new office on campus. Sure, it's still in the basement but I have a window. It has more privacy and I don't need to share it with anyone. This is where I will finish writing my PhD dissertation. Hey, there's even a fridge! You can put six-packs of be-... SODA in here. Milk, yogurt, candy bars in the freezer...

... I need to get a fridge for my office.

If you get one that's sturdy enough, then you can pile stuff on top of it, too.
Maybe two fridges? Then put a solid core wooden door across them and call it your desk?

That's practically what I did in college. Except it wasn't fridges I put the solid core wooden door on.

Sitting here listening to Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy by Return to Forever and watching the Blizzard CS tweets go by and I realize...
