Rant VIII: The Reckoning

Coworker came into contact with bed bugs while on the job. Now multiple cruisers are quarantined and we all get to pray he hasn't spread them to all of us.

I'll take "sentences I never thought I'd have to write" for $500 Alex. I think one of my friends may have just been indicted for international espionage. Been on the news.

Welcome, folks, to the multiple ranting rant thread. This was a ranturrific weekend.

  1. Car turned out to be $1207, not "just under $1000". I'd already paid the mechanic $300 so now I owe $907. Paid him $300 on Thursday with the knowledge that I was paying him the remaining $607 out of the two events I was working this weekend. So it turns out I did two events for my mechanic.
  2. Had an event in Cedar Rapids, IA. That went...okay. Crowd was large but also largely uninterested, except the teams that were participating. That was Friday night. Saturday night our event was in Des Moines, which is a couple hours away. We took our sweet time getting there but when we did - now only hours before the event - I discovered I'd left all of the awards (trophies) at the hotel. They had them and are mailing them to me, but now I have to pay for that as well as paying to ship 5 of them to the winners from last night.
  3. Get home about 1 am last night and the engine on the van just starts pegging RPMs. I put it in gear and it tries to do the old "power stance" where you burn rubber by having your foot on the brakes. So I get to unload all my gear and take it back to the mechanic. How much will that cost? Unknown. Still haven't paid Sam for working tech on the events and that's $400.
Deep breath. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-!

Yikes. That's crazy. Is it someone you're in contact with often?
Yeah he's one of the senpai at our dojo. The charge seems a bit trumped up. He's Iranian and he and his uncle own a computer business here in the states. They're accused of providing prohibited tech to Iran.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just an import/export issue. I know for awhile it was illegal to export video game consoles to Iran because the government was worried they'd take the chips and make missiles.

It's most anything covered under the Iranian trade embargo. You couldn't even sell them cell phones.
Although this may also have been someone rushing to get the charges in before the trade embargo was lifted about 5-6 hours ago.

I just cannot fathom the mind of someone that would do that.

It also means that the server that went down the previous weekend probably wasn't random either.
Shortly after this our office admin/accountant blew up at another employee. This wasn't the first time, but it was the last and they were fired that evening, and the locks changed the next day (and security rented for a few days) because of the nature of the angry tirade.

Hired an accountant part time to fill in and straighten things out, and they discovered that this office admin had embezzled something on the order of $25k over the previous six months.

I now strongly suspect that they were the culprit in the server destruction that led to this whole problem, probably trying to hide evidence of their embezzlement.

I can now fathom the mind of someone that would do that - it wasn't random wanton destruction as an outlet from an unrelated person lashing out due to bad circumstances. It was most likely someone I knew and trusted trying to hide their crime of theft. I still have no actionable evidence that they were the culprit for the server damage, so we can't do anything about that.

Fortunately this new accountant is meticulous, the case regarding the embezzlement appears pretty solid, and they are pressing charges shortly. A felony theft on this admin/accountant's public record isn't going to look very good, and hopefully will prevent them from being in a position to steal from any future employers.

Something tells me that the previous owners of this company sugar coated the position they were in to the company that they hand picked to be the receivership firm - because after 18 months of lying to each other and themselves, why wouldn't they? I have a feeling we're going to be liquidating this place, unless they can find a buyer by the end of the week.
