How did we go from "As loud as a bag of hammers" to "As dumb/crazy as a bag of hammers"? I get the loud one, a sack of hammers would be loud, and to be equated to said sack would mean you are either loud or obvious, but I disagree that a sack of hammers is dumb. I can see the "As dumb as a rock" phrase, a normal ass rock can barely do anything, you gotta sharpen that shit if you wanna cut something and after that its only good for bashing, but a sack of hammers is hardly dumb. If your in a position where you ware out hammers fast-BAM-bunch of hammers, making the sack not dumb. Either way I find the corruption of colloquialisms FASCINATING.
I cited the original version of the phrase, the latter is the one more commonly heard today.
