My husband and I were actually discussing the two different endings of Eva the other day (the series, and the quite possibly more nonsensical movie) and about the only conclusion we came to was that
If Shinji and Asuka are meant to be the new Adam and Eve, humanity is fucked.

Curse Gainax and their need to be overly philosophical in their endings.

They almost made me fly into a fit of rage at the end of Kare Kano, with their whole,
"If I don't NEED to rely on anyone else anymore, we can just break up right?!"
nonsense. But thankfully they didn't go that far.

No, overly philosophical would mean that there was something definite in mind, that got over-complicated or obfuscated in the telling. Gainax just grabs a big old bucket of symbols, characters, events, and concepts and splashes it against the wall, and whatever sticks is the ending.

Black: Play game, record video in fraps
Red: Wait days while hindbrain recognizes and eventually suggests pertinent meta references
Yellow: Take a cleaver to the footage, hacking out 90% of it as too boring/repetitive for the episode
Green: Narrate remaining footage, resize/tweak playback speed to fit narration time
Blue: Add music
Repeat red thru blue 4 times, once for each period of the day.
