[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

I bit a popcorn kernel and it knocked the filling out of one of my teeth. Unfortunately I'm heading out for a week-long trip to Tokyo tomorrow, so I won't be able to get a dentist to look at it until I get back, at earliest.

This is either going to be an awesome vacation, or a pain-filled one.

Well I was making good progress on Fade and promoting it around Twitter and the like. So of course my Mac's hard drive failed. Fortunately I have backups but no replacement yet.

Seems like actual failure to me. Cannot re partition or reformat it. It shows up as a disc but I can't even hear it spin up anymore. It's not apple's infamous hybrid disc issue--had to fix that for a neighbor (because as you say, once they find out...). It's just a plain platter drive.

If it was just a directory thing, there are tools to try and fix that. If it's mechanical, then that's the end of that drive.
What do you mean by the "hybrid disc issue?" Apple doesn't use SSHDs that I know of.

They do, since about 2012. They call it the Fusion drive. It'll lose its partition table essentially.

Ah, yes. I thought you meant some sort of "everything in one unit" solution like a SSHD rather than the 2-part solutions used by Apple (Fusion Drive) and Intel (Smart Response).

You should start going to meetings in a shirt with treadmarks on the back.

Covered with a Hawaiian shirt, if you don't actually want to get fired.

Oh, I should perhaps be more specific, it was the business owner (who doesn't actually have an office here or come to meetings, just drops by once every couple months to muck something up but otherwise is usually content to micromanage the hell out of us via e-mail), not my direct boss (The General Manager who's actually pretty cool to me when the owner doesn't prevent it), who did this.

I managed to get it back up for now, and the backups restored. I had restored from Time Machine without resetting the partitions. I guess something got borked there, because the second attempt worked. Which probably means it's about to permanently fail. Oh well. I've been meaning to put it all over on my PC anyway, since my Macbook is now 5 years old and it takes Photoshop CC 5 minutes just to open. I don't want to, though. Hate what you want about Macs, but they still art better.

That's sort of like the slime-encrusted human nightmare that is my department head. She works at a different campus, has no library experience, and most of her job is managing the professional certification / non-academic credit courses. But she micromanages us at jobs she doesn't know, via phone and email.

So I totally know that feel, man.

SO GRUMPY. I can feel the old GasBandit bubbling deep inside me. I had an impulse to tell a coworker today that her new hairdo reminded me of a prostitute in a spaghetti western. For no good reason. Fortunately I kept it tamped down.

Was it at least a high class prostitute?

Ha, today keeps getting better and better. I've been trying to figure out why we've been getting "destination net unreachable" from the first hop up from our router for a day or two now, and the engineer just found out that this ISP has just changed owners AGAIN (for the third time), and nobody we knew how to contact is answering any more.

Note - this is not the previous ISP I ranted about, where the owner going through a divorce is deliberately torpedoing his business so he can say he has no money when it comes time to talk alimony/child support for his eight kids. This is the one that got sold and the new owners didn't even know the physical location of all their assets.

So anyway, certain websites just.. don't resolve. And we've got no way to contact anybody to get it fixed. So, for users who are running into problems, I'm having to switch them over to the divorce guy gateway, and hope and pray IT doesn't shit the bed.

I don't get the Apple hate, either. I'm for whatever works the best, regardless of origin. It could be an ancient Amiga or something, but so long as it gets the job done, let it ride. Much of the Applebashing I hear reminds me a lot of that sort of gaybashing where the person doing the posturing might be doing so solely because they are terrified they might discover they like it if they try. Of course, my Apple/PC ratio is probably something like 2.5:1, so I realize my opinion may be discarded as "tainted."
EDIT: the same goes for Ford, Pepsi, Folger's, Star Wars, the Rolling Stones, or anything else where the entirety of the professed hatred stems from a stated preference for "the other guy" (GM, Coke, Maxwell House, Star Trek, the Beatles).
(Yes, I realize this might get moved to the political thread due to DEM'S FIGHTIN' WURDS)

You don't have a dumb box lying around that you can whip up to forward and cache DNS, do you?

I don't think that'll fix this. I'm still getting proper DNS resolution through Google's DNS, it's just the next switch above our gateway is fubar.
