Mad Max: Fury Road

It was pretty intense. And it hardly let up for the whole run.

Non stop action and it was amazing. Solid female lead, solid male lead, no romance... solid script. It was goooooood fun summer action flick.

And that guy with the guitar made my day, every scene he was in was awesomesauce.

I wouldn't go THAT far, no one is in blackface/yellowface here. But it still kind of made me double take and enjoy the movie less. Did a character accidentally wander into the movie from the set of the latest Seth McFarlane/Adam Sandler movie? She just felt completely tone deaf (HAHAHAHAHAH I'M HILARIOUS) from the rest of the movie's humor. At least when John Michael Higgins' commentator says hideous shit, it's undercut by Banks or from him in general just being a gigantic boob.

Hot Fuzz

Eh. It was overlong, and predictable at every turn. Yeah, I know it was kind of supposed to be, what with being a sendup of action movies. But still. It might've been funnier if it was shorter. I paused it at the point where Pegg accuses Dalton, and you know exactly how that's going to turn out... except I saw that there was an entire hour left. This one might have suffered from too much buildup, because I've heard nothing but praise for it.

Honestly, I wasn't crazy about it the first time I watched it, either. Liked it more than you did, from the sounds of it, but still didn't see what the big hullaballoo was.

But I found repeat watchings of it and cathing more and more of the little jokes, I wound up liking it and appreciating it more.

Mad Max: Fury Road

What the fuck did I just watch?

Was it art?

Was it trash?

Was it the fever dream of a madman?

I mean, the cinematography was just absolutely amazing. Parts of it were just beautiful. Parts of it were poignant even if the characters were incidental to the action.

Then it becomes a Megadeath album cover. Then it becomes a Whitesnake video. Then it becomes beautiful haunting imagery.

I feel about this movie like I felt about Shoot 'Em Up. I know from a story and character perspective it's ridiculous, vapid and spectacle for the sake of spectacle. But what a spectacle it is.

I mean, jesus christ, how surreal is it when there's a car made almost entirely out of speakers with a guy dressed like a cenobite hanging from it cirque du solei style playing a guitar that spits flame out of the end.

Funny thing is, in the wrong hands, we've already seen this movie. It's not the story that makes it art, but the way it's told and shot.

Can't wait to see it again. Probably in a couple weeks.

I thought I would hate Chappie. I went into it with a lot of preconceptions that turned out to be all wrong. I expected a light-hearted affair thanks to the trailers and instead I got a pretty gritty view of how putting a sentient robot in the hands of petty criminals might turn out. It was like Robocop meats Short Circuit, but without the good-natured humor of either. All in all I rather enjoyed it and thought the actor who portrayed Chappie did a wonderful job with the conflicting emotions.

I was curious to see it myself, and I understood it was going to be the latter gritty story, but when it got 30% on rotten tomatoes I decided to skip it.

Also, District 9 put me over my tolerance quota for the south african accent. It just sounds too much like a dutchman with a head cold for me to take seriously. My warhammer guild had a member from south africa who was incredibly vocal on ventrilo, and the more frustrated he got the more he would talk, and I had to start literally biting myself to stop from bursting out laughing at him.

Home Alone - 54% (#2 only got 24%)
Tommy Boy - 44%
Hook - 31%
The Butterfly Effect - 33%
Kung Pow! Enter the Fist - 11%
Constantine - 46%
Boondock Saints - 20%
Tango & Cash - 39%

You get my drift? I'll bet you liked some of these. And if you decided not to see them based on their RT score, you'd have missed out on something you enjoyed.

See the movie. If you don't like it you've only wasted an hour or two.

I'd actually say those are pretty fair scores - Hook, Constantine, and Tango and Cash actually should be lower. Just because I like a movie doesn't mean it's good

I do know that critics, however, definitely have to be taken with a grain of salt where comedies are concerned - none of them seem to have a sense of humor.

Movie criticism rules and everyone should read critics they agree with and disagree with. They also love funny movies that are good. Doesn't Hangover 1 have like 80%+? Bridesmaids is probably 90+. Recently The Duff, Spongebob, Paddington Top Five, St. Vincent were all fairly well-reviewed.

I'm gonna agree with Gasbandit; those seem like more than fair scores for some of them. I like Boondock Saints, but I'd never defend it.

Also, the closer a movie is to 50%, the more divisive it is, not like getting an F in school. That's how Rotten Tomatoes scores should be taken, as they tell you a percentage of agreement. If a movie is near 50%, that means you probably need to see it for yourself to judge.

The billboard is there because the movie goes to great lengths to exaggerate/spotlight (depending on your point of view) the depravity of humankind, especially in LA.

It's alright. I saw it in the theater with some family. If I'd been on my own, I probably would have wanted to wait for it to come out on premium cable/netflix. But hey, it's definitely worth a torrent.
