The EPIC WIN Thread 3: SON OF EPIC

I've spent the last week waking up at 5am, working out (20 minutes at least of cardio), drinking lots of water (I've cut everything except coffee and water), then showering and coming to work. Combine this with eating well and occasionally working out in the afternoon as well, and my blood sugar this morning is down to 155. If I can keep this up for a few months and drop another 15 - 20 pounds, I should be much, much healthier.

The longer you keep it up, the longer you'll get to keep it up.

Noah entered a writing contest sponsored by the base library. I got a call today to make sure he will be at the awards ceremony on Saturday because he placed! The person who called, though, started to say he won then quickly changed it to placed. So...maybe he won for his age group and they don't want to give away the winners just yet? Whatever! I'm so proud of him!!

His story was called The Dog King's Tomb. It was about our cat and two of her feline companions who had to find the Dog King's magic sword in order to save their town from being destroyed by the evil King Artivas of Mouselton.

@AussieT and I have talked to him about possibly making one of his stories into a book. He has one about Ninja Penguins that he started last year. His teacher read it to the class and the kids thought it was from a published book.
I was supposed to talk to some of the self-published authors here about what that process involves and forgot until right now. Oops.

Anniversary presents!
This is our 5 year anniversary. Traditional 5-year gifts are "wood" themed. I got my wife a hand-carved wooden statue of two lovers kissing, some Steven King books (because paper comes from wood), and another statuette from Willow Tree of a guy with his hands around his girl. She loves that kind of stuff.

I got pool cues and that globe mini bar that I was lusting after :D

I won a prize from MINI. They have a "lost & found" contest where they post a bunch of things that people supposedly left in cars following test drives. You can claim one of them as your own, and they ask you a question to "verify" that it's yours. I claimed a backpack, and here's the response I got. I'll let photos tell the story:

In retrospect, I should've guessed they'd put the thing into the backpack that I claimed was in there. Maybe I should've gone with a nice camera lens or something. Of course, then I probably wouldn't have won the contest, so whatever. Either way, I had fun and laughed.

HE WON!!! YAY!

At work, we have a program written sometime in mid-2000's (.NET Framework 2.0). It's used to calculate the mileage our field guys drive, for reimbursement purposes. It was last updated in 2012.

It broke in December. They just told me this last week.

Turns out it's using mapquest API, which changed...you guessed it...in December. The mapquest api calls are hardcoded into the program (rather than using config files) so I have to recompile the whole thing from scratch.

The code is compiled binaries, we don't have access to the source, and we don't have a working relationship with the company that wrote it. I'm expected to fix it.
dotPeek decompiler to the rescue! Look at all that pretty source code.

Oh look, you tried to make things complicated by divorcing some code from the main dll, and hiding them in the GAC? That's fine. I can find those and decompile them too.

Blah--.Net 2.0 bugs/idiosyncrasies converting to 4.0, and the 2.0 web.config is a nightmare. That's ok. I've worked in both. I know what program references to add, and what I can cut out of the config file.

Oh wait, you have strongly typed data classes, but no XSD files for me to compile from? No problem...I'll switch them all to generic data classes. You're not even using the strongly typed objects properly anyway, which would have made my job so much harder. Oh look, I found some bugs you left in the program. Those parts that never worked? They're working now.

Screw you, computer. I am your God, and you will do as I command. :D

Not bad for 8 hours of work.

FINALLY! I have my name in comics! Well...sort of.

Note: If you read the comic or plan to, just read my highlighted letter. There are spoilers in that image for major events.

One of my favourite comics, Chew, printed my letter in their latest issue (#48.)

Just got back from Kansas City where I was running a game show event. Not shown is me wearing a tux channeling my inner Richard Dawson. Show went very well and now in addition to Columbus (OH) and Chicago, we might be getting the Denver event. Score!

...That was the venue, 5 minutes after you started? Nice. Finally found an efficient way to clear the hall after the event is over. :p

Just got the keys for my new house. This has been such an insane 12 months. Was recommended for a huge promotion in June (didn't get it but still, its pretty unheard of for someone my age to get a shot at it). Started grad school in August. Married in October. Bought a house in April. Also just found out I'm STD free! Anyways, I know the world has become far more complex and the idea of the "American Dream" is something that a lot of people don't believe in anymore. Two cars and a house with a wife and a good job with a pension. And I have that now. I'm not saying this to brag. It's just....man....I was the last person anyone would have seen this happening too. I had a difficult childhood. I floundered in college, spent damn near the entire time high out of my mind, dealing drugs, and looking like a homeless person....worst of all joining letter writing campaigns for Howard Dean. I have a very ambiguous sexuality...and hell I may even have a problem there, we'll see. Yet here I am, working for one of the most conservative companies in the world. And I don't feel for a second like I sold out. I feel like...I'm infecting them (like I said though I'm STD free so this is meant metaphorically).

I feel like this is our century. This is our chance. It's not going to be easy, and we won't all get what we want. I mean hell. The house I really wanted, and kind of thought of buying 3 years ago? It's now almost doubled in value. The amount of money I could have made if I had bought it is hard for me to even understand. But you can't sit around and think about the shots you missed. Happiness isn't found in getting what you wanted. Happiness is found in learning to want what you can get. Charlie may call that "slave language", and I'm not saying you should just accept your lot and move on. What I'm saying is that, rich or poor, there are opportunities to find happiness and effect the change you want to see in the world, you just can't get bogged down on making it fit a certain design. I mean, ok, I just said that I have achieved the classic american dream, but that's only through my own perspective of it. If I spent my time defining that dream the way others do my situation wouldn't qualify for that.

But this is our time. Our parents lights are fading and it's our chance to bring our own stars to bear. I will be (my version) of the man my father wanted me to be and stand on his shoulders in this new century.

Anyways. Just...wanted to share my happiness.
