Video Game News and Miscellany

Of course, that can be tricky, since with so many studios having shut down over the years, there are quite a few games that no one can say exactly who owns the rights to them, which in turn impedes remakes, re-releases, updates, etc.

Hence the drive for copyright reform.

It looks like the article is more about "phone-home" type games and ones that require actual server-based hosting to function than about copyright. If that's the case, I can see the point they're trying to make, but I still think that when a company decides to completely stop supporting a game (such as by, say, turning off the company-owned/-leased remote servers that the game requires in order to run properly), that should automatically start some sort of abandonment process.

Square-Enix tried jumping into Monster Hunter's territory with that awful Final Fantasy hunter game, so it makes sense for Capcom to jump the other way. It doesn't look bad considering it was just an antics cutscene with no sense of the gameplay. Can't say for certain I'd be into it; I feel like it would just make me want to go play Monster Hunter.

I knew Adderall was a "thing" in gaming, but I didn't realize just how much.
Also, it's weird to hear that it's generally assumed people in e-sports are referred to as "washed up" as soon as they hit their 20's.

The SECOND your reflexes start to go, you are done in most competitive eSports. That's the entire game and no one wants a 30+ year old on their team unless they are a consistent winner. As such, most players are retired well before 30 and ether become coaches/managers for eSports or go to school to get a real job.

Man, I was just reading discussions about the best TF2 players in the world for each class, and I've never heard of any of them. I come from an era when Reptile was considered the best TF2 soldier.

Bonus characters, levels, now cheating, what's the next thing to be sold through microtransactions? Graphics? I'm betting graphics, someone will sell a game with crap graphics and sell the "Visible" package, and that's when we'll know game companies have gone their farthest in terms of crazy greed.

In order to get DX11 features in Dark Souls 2 on PC, you have to buy the kind of fucked Scholar of the First Sin.

Selling EZMode Fatalities is lame, but not game-breaking (plus you can unlock them ingame anyway). Personally I agree with TotalBiscuit on pretty much everything, Goro is the second biggest crime NR and WB has committed, the weird, botched up PC launch being first. The EZM Fatalitiy thing doesn't really affect the game at all.

Mario Kart 8's second DLC pack, with mainly Animal Crossing stuff, releases April 23.

More importantly, it contains a Big Blue (F-Zero) track, along with what might be the best new arrangement of Big Blue's theme I've ever heard. I mean, holy fuck, listen to this:

MORE STUFF I'm so bored today.

WildStar is doing this new promotion where you buy a physical copy of the game and get one of three special items (two are mounts, one is a unique wardrobe set). In theory it's cool, a shot at a neat cosmetic item and the 30-day sub bonus from the purchase (which stacks, two boxes = 60 days, etc). What bugs me is WildStar is, for some stupid reason, still $40 a box (and a monthly fee, where even fucking ESO is ahead of them). Even FFXIV with it's pretty substantial success post-reboot is down to 15-20 bucks, and is on sale pretty often on Steam.

Ok, I think I'm the only one who has Mortal Kombat X, so I'm going to weigh in on what's been talked about.
Firstly, I don't give a flying fuck if someone wants insta-fatalities for money. It makes no difference to me. I'll just continue doing them the regular way. It has zero influence on my gameplay at all. If people want to waste money with simplified fatalities, more power to them.
The Krypt is BY FAR the best iteration of the Krypt that they've ever done. People are honestly screwing themselves over by paying to unlock everything. But again, it's individual, so I don't give a crap if someone doesn't want to play it and just get the unlocks by paying. Though, I do have to say that I think this is probably speculation because there's no option to pay to unlock the Krypt by paying for it.

OK, that being said, the launch yesterday was pretty much a cluster fuck. Steams new method of doing micro patches for downloading games is horrible. I hate it and I wish they would do away with it, but it looks like it may be the shade of things to come, and it may be possible that it will improve over time. It did take until about 7PM yesterday to finally get the game up to snuff to play online. But, it's not the worst launch I've ever experienced, but it wasn't great. I had school work to do anyway, so it didn't bother me much.

I'm LOVING the story mode so far. I like the next generation characters, and I like how they're covering character back stories from the interim between the end of the last game and the 25 year gap to the current game. I love playing the following new characters in particular: Ferra and Torr, D'vorah, Cassie Cage, and Erron Black. Having three different variations for each character opens up so much possibility for mixing up all your favorite character.

Despite the rocky launch, I'd say it's overwhelmingly good.

On a completely personal note, I'm ecstatic that one of the new characters is gay.

Now you get my point of view on Evolve skins.
