Rant VIII: The Reckoning

I am just so angry right now, I don't know whether to scream or cry.

The Z family is going to be traveling to Taiwan at the end of April. (Hey, @bhamv3, how you doin'?). It's Mr. Z's grandmother's 80th birthday, so we've known attendance is mandatory for quite some time. Also, she's never met her only great-grandchild. That being the case, I asked my mother back in December/January if she could watch our dog. For the entirety we had him, she's watched him if we've ever had to go away. She loves having him around and he's always been an easy dog to care for. (He's very mellow and go-with-the-flow.) Plus, she only lives about 25 minutes from us.

Tonight, she and her husband (not my dad, obv, they just married last summer) stop by for an early Easter dinner, and while preparing said dinner, she drops the bomb on us that she scheduled her belated honeymoon that same week. Not because it was the only time they could go, it's just that she forgot. Even though I've reminded her of our trip several times since January. Did I mention, while my mother is a lovely and generous woman, she has also been known to be an airhead sometimes?

This is not a small issue. We don't know of anyone less than an hour and 1/2 away that could maybe watch him, due to allergies/not having a place that allows pets, having another pet/s already, can't drive or stay at our house/lives close enough to drop in and walk him. Not to mention the kennels around here aren't cheap, and know a woman who's dog died in the "care" of one of them, so that's out of the question. Mr. Z and I are desperately scanning our friends list trying to think of someone who'd be able, when my mother walks in and asks, "So, what's new with you?" which I curtly replied, "Having to find some to watch Tofu!" and gave her the cold shoulder. Did I also mention I started potty training Li'l Z this weekend? Needless to say, I'm already stretched thin and my patience is low. I also rarely fight with my mom, so rather than scream and rant at her, I'm seething in the other room, trying to focus on getting Li'l Z to potty. Mind you, my mother is well aware she screwed up, so she is not pushing me or trying to defend her position.

So Mr. Z goes into the kitchen while we're trying to get Li'l Z fed in the other room, when mom's husband decides to chew Mr. Z out, telling him "people make mistakes" and "stop acting so childish". This, from a man who is NOTORIOUS for throwing temper tantrums, like storming out of a car at a traffic light, when he doesn't get his way, to the point where they were engaged for 3 years because my mother wasn't sure she wanted to put up with them. In fact, pretty much every holiday for the past few years he's guilted my mother and tried to keep her from coming over because my dad is there. (They get along, despite being exes, and my dad has always been nice to him. There's zero jealousy from my dad, and frankly, they have one kid and grand kid.) I couldn't hear what was said, but he goes off on Mr.Z and storms out. Mr. Z, clearly furious, turn to my mom and says, very calmly, "Mom, I love you very much, but I think it would be a good idea if you guys went home now." My mother, to her credit (and knowing her husbands tantrums), very calmly said she understood, kissed us goodbye and left without a fuss. Mr. Z then filled me in on what was said in the kitchen and I actually got up and stormed out to the car to chew him out, but they had already pulled out of the driveway and I wasn't going to make a scene. And then Li'l Z had an accident to literally put the crap cherry on my shit sundae.

TL, DR: family does stupid things sometimes. Mr. Z has fixed me a drink and I'm a lot calmer now, though still pissed at the whole evening. Also, I don't like fighting with my mother, so I just sent her an email saying while news of her mistake couldn't have worse timing, I love her and thanked her for dinner.

That sucks.

Well, I and a number of other halforumites would no doubt be happy to host your dog while you're out of town, but unfortunately we're all a great deal further than an hour and a half away.

Thanks, guys! My luck turned around a little after I wrote that: my dad called and when I told him why I was a wreck, he offered to drive down and take our dog back to his place for two weeks. It's a 3 1/2 hour drive for him each way, but he and my grandmother wants to see Li'l Z every chance they can get, so they're going to visit with us before and after we get back. I think it's a fair trade.

Do you not have any neighbors you trust? Man that sucks. Glad you got it taken care of but what a pain in the ass.

This Saturday we decided to get the dog groomed as she was shedding over the world. Here was the plan: take her to the dog wash place (Soggy Paws - awesome place!) and THEN vacuum. So we got her down and washed, came home and the vacuum went *whirr**click**THUNK* and then refused to do anything else. I took it apart but couldn't find any obstructions so it has to be the motor. So we took the dead thing to the garbage. And then since we had people coming over I took a dog brush to the carpet and cleaned it by hand.

And now we have to go buy a new vacuum.

Dysons are insanely overrated and overpriced. We decided to spend our refund on a nice vacuum a few years back. After much research, we decided on the following: 1) a bag vac is superior to bagless, mostly because the bag is the filter, and it gets tossed regularly. 2) Dyson is expensive, but underperforms in tests. Not terrible, but not worth the extra cost.

In the end, we settled on a Kenmore Intuition 31100, which has also been a top pick from a lot of reviewers for several years now. It's not cheap ($260), but it's cheaper than a Dyson by a long shot, and it does a better job, and it has Sear's warranty. I really like this vacuum. The only catch is that the bags are stupid expensive. But we have had no problem with the Amazon knock-offs that are not expensive.

Do you have any local vacuum repair places? We have plenty around where I live where you can regularly get "reconditioned" Dyson/Kirby/etc at significantly lower prices.

Is Oreck still a thing?

Oh, and you remember this bad boy? It wasn't the fanciest or the strongest, but man, a 5 year old could fix it no matter the problem.

The one my family had was orange though, not mint green.

(Iunno bout vacuums. I have a Dirt Devil upright I barely use).

Go luxury, get a Filter Queen.

Had one growing up until I moved out of my mom's place. That thing was a stalwart. I think she still has it. She's had it since the 70s.

Holy shit, just looked into them. They're like 2000 bucks.

FUCK.

The best IAMA on Reddit in 2013 was with a vacuum repair technician. Check it out before you buy a new vacuum.
That dude really, REALLY likes canister vacuums. I remember that. Gonna have to peruse it again. But they still talk about spending HUNDREDS on vacuums, which we just plain won't be able to do.[DOUBLEPOST=1427729787,1427729474][/DOUBLEPOST]Link for the lazy.

I got a refurbished Oreck and am really happy with it. I have a tiny vacuum with attachments when I need to get into smaller places or do the curtains. I guess it would be nice if my full size vacuum could do all that, but it works for now.

I hear that sharks are pretty dang good, and cheaper than dysons
Not according to the vacuum tech guy on Reddit.

Firstly, we have a saying; There are no bad vacuums (except Shark). You should match a vacuum to your particular needs.
The brands I endorse: Riccar - America for their uprights
Miele - Germany for their canisters (best filtration. period)
Sebo - Germany for its solid performance and suction
Brands to avoid:
Shark - Just don't....ever.
Bissell - used to make grea machines. now have crappy parts and complicated crap
Eureka - their top models are the only ones I would consider buying if I wanted something disposal.
Kirby - might get raped in your home.
Rainbow - Seriously? Complicated crap w/ poor design.
Find a vacuum dealer in your area if you have one, and ask them what they think. Research brands and avoid paid reviews like Consumer Reports. What is important is buying a vacuum that meets your needs.

This is my vacuum, except my model is brown. It came from my grandfather, who used it forever, and then my parents, who decided they would use it until it stopped working, and it never did. So now I use it, and it still works like a boss.

I personally used to use a Dyson Animal (the purple one) we got on sale for something like $250 off once the second generation came out. We still have it, it's just back at the house we don't live in, waiting for us to finish cleaning it out so we can use it there one last time before we pack it up to come over to the new place.
For now we are using a Kirby Sentria that my father-in-law got at a garage sale for something like $100. That man and his garage sales. No lie, about five years ago he bought a 2000 Range Rover...at a garage sale.

I used to buy all my baby toys at garage sales. People only use them for a very short while, and then they need to get rid of them...why pay $70-100 for an "exersaucer" if you can get one at a garage sale for a buck. Most of the baby stuff I got at garage sales was in remarkably good shape.

I didn't mind cleaning them up before he used them..hell, I was already cleaning up baby toys and stuff every day anyway.

We have a refurbished Dyson that we bought at Frys while we were in CA. I think Noah was 2 when we got it. So that makes it 7 - 8 years old. The only problem we have is the on/off button sometimes sticks. That wasn't a problem until I lent it to a neighbor who needed to clean for housing's check out inspection, but their household goods had already shipped.

We also got the Dyson Animal as a bridal shower gift 8 years ago, and it still works like new. Plus the allergen filter is really easy to clean. I'm pretty happy with it, and I use it fairly often, thanks to kid, pet, husband...

We bought a Hoover upright canister vac a year ago from Costco for $99. So far it's worked great except that I accidentally stretch the belt out that runs the brush so it sounds a little clunky. I just haven't gotten around to finding out what model belt to replace it with, and it still works well, so, I'm not overly fussed.

Do you not have any neighbors you trust? Man that sucks. Glad you got it taken care of but what a pain in the ass.
We have some nice neighbors across the street that moved in a few months ago, while we're friendly with them (we exchanged cell numbers in case of emergencies) we don't know them well enough, or hang out with them enough, to ask them that big of a favor. Mr. Z and I thought about it, but we didn't want to be jerky neighbors.

Smashed the shit out of my finger about 4 hours ago at work (and it's still bleeding a little bit) but if I report it I'll get fired or get days off work that I can't afford, so that means I'm stuck here at work with either a broken or (I think this one) a badly bruised finger on my left hand that I can't even put a disinfectant on until tonight (4 hours from this post) when I get home. Blah
Yucky picture
