Minor victory thread

I'm still waiting on 1099s :(
I still haven't gotten the paper copy of everything yet, but I discovered that most everything I needed was online except for one interest deduction that I only knew up through November. For that one I'll admit that I just did ($NovTotal / 11 * 12) because at most I'm going to be off by a dollar.

Huh, so I was watching a thing on youtube about hidden gems on the NES, and they mentioned a game by the name of MetalStorm. The guy talking about it also said it's a very rare game, and buying one off ebay set him back a bit.

And I thought to myself hold on... MetalStorm? I have that game! I loved it as a kid, I never would have thought of it as a rare or sought after game. Who knew.

I'm getting temporarily transferred to another department at work (March to July) because they have a sudden and catastrophic manpower shortage. I expressed slight reluctance at the transfer, since the other department's not really my area of expertise. They said they'll give me a 16% raise. So I said okay.

Yay raise.

It didn't get a big print run, isn't on the virtual console, and is pretty well regarded, so yeah... you could make a few bucks on it you wanted. Going for about 100 bucks loose right now, which is pretty good.

This isn't related to the little accident that happened two days ago, I hope?

I bought it for $5 as a kid in bin somewhere. It was one of my favorite NES games though, it's pretty good.

I wonder if I have any other gems in my collection. I've never sold or traded any video game I've ever owned.

Except for FFXIII. Fuck that game.

Last night two of the rats started having a fight in the center of the cage. Before my wife or I could get up to go break it up, the one we've dubbed "Mama Rat" for all her nest-making skills did a vertical run down from the top of the cage, and then leaped off the side, landing on top of the two and pushing them apart. Then she held each one down and cleaned them.

It probably sounds stupid, but I was really proud. When it was the three boys a couple years ago and two would start fighting, the third would just watch from above.

I RMA'd my video card. It tested as bad, and they're sending a replacement. It's a newer model with better specs. Sweet.

Looks like I'll be a teacher a bit longer. An opportunity has come up that I didn't think ever would. As much turnover as there is with assistants and special subject teachers at this school, a homeroom position almost never becomes available.

My evaluation with our head of school was yesterday. We talked about my strengths, my recent struggles, my discomfort with advanced math that I never trained for... and how strange and unpredictable my schedule has become. She communicates to me that I'm an asset and she wants to keep me--and she wants me to be in a place where I feel happier.

Anyway, long story longer--a 3rd grade teacher is leaving in May, and she wants me to take the spot. She said I could take the Mardi Gras holiday to think about it, but I'm pretty sure I'll take it.
________________________________________________________________________________________

Pros:
1) My biggest issue with this job right now is that I don't like my planning time being taken away. I'm at a lot of people's beck and call simply because I'm a one subject teacher. One subject, but 3 grades... As a homeroom teacher, I would have a more rigid schedule with less planning time--time I'd be allowed to make the most of.

2) I'd get to read to kids again--and to teach them to enjoy literature. I miss that so much.

3) Parent interaction. One of my worries about moving out of a teaching career is how little I get to interface with other adults sometimes. This way I'm guaranteed a meeting with most of my students' parents. I get to practice talking to grownups again.

4) Grade level work is highly collaborative. I have a pretty good idea about who's leaving, and if I'm right, I get to work with one of my favorite people at this school. And if not, I'm still ok with the change.

5) The standards I need to meet are more clearly-defined. With Science I have national and state standards to refer to, but there's so much information that I have a scary amount of freedom that I never felt comfortable with. I like the idea of having parameters, especially since this school is so flexible in how I get to teach.

6) I'll get to spend more time with a group and really bond.

Cons:
1) More work functions that I have to attend.

2) I'll have to really learn how to hold my pee.

3) I'll miss getting to know three grade levels' worth of kids.

4) I will miss science a bit.

Sorry that was a lot to read... but I am actually pretty excited.

Forgive me if I'm wrong - these things surely are different between countries - but, as a homeroom, teacher, couldn't you still sneak in some sciencey stuff now and again? Not the same as really teaching science, obviously, but the occasional cool experiment and such?

Either way, enjoy :)

Absolutely. They encourage that! :)

I got myself an old Ross roadbike today for $5. It's an absolute mess, an I'm pretty sure the frame is shot. They did some serious damage trying to get the seat post free.

Why buy it then? Surprisingly enough it had a shimano 600 arabesque groupset on it. Everything except the rear derailleur. It has a fully chromed fork too, but it's got a few rust spots. We'll see if they can be cleaned up. I'll be stripping it and putting the parts on a steyr clubman I have. Gotta find that rear derailleur though.

Well just don't get the sherriff's boy trampled by a horse when you try to win that bet by riding your velocipede across the quagmire of the boardwalk and thoroughfare, Tom!

@Shakey

Tom Nuttall, in Deadwood, is very proud of his fancy bicycle.

NSFW Dialogue

He wins a bet that he can ride his fancy bicycle from one boardwalk, across the muddy unpaved road, to the other boardwalk.

Later, the sheriff's son, when helping Tom with his bicycle, is trampled to death by a runaway horse. (couldn't find video)

Tom never could bring himself to ride his bicycle again.

I may have to check it out. I might need a break from TV though. Watching walking dead from start to the current episode burnt me out a bit.

Was able to get the bill for my hospital stay cut into 5 monthly payments, and an extra two weeks to get the first payment in. Got to ease the pain somehow after that $300 estimate on car repairs (but that's another thread).
