In all seriousness though, my brain has set up this defense mechanism wherein everytime my daughter starts sassing me, I find it hilarious and start laughing, which really only serves to escalate the issue. I swear I try really hard not to laugh, but when a 9 year old girl is trying to assert that I am not allowed to clean her room unless she is there watching me (and not helping), or tells me that she doesn't have to go to bed on a school night because she's not tired, all I can do is laugh.
There isn't a kid in all of human history that hasn't tried that, nor is there a single case in which it has worked. :D

I honestly never really had a problem with bedtime. I didn't want to regularly stay up past 10pm until I was in high school, and at that point, no one cared.

According to the book's description on Amazon, author Stephanie Messenger "has devoted her life to educating people about vaccines and natural health choices."

Natural meaning anti-vax, of course. From the book's back cover:

Melanie's Marvelous Measles was written to educate children on the benefits of having measles and how you can heal from them naturally and successfully. Often today, we are being bombarded with messages from vested interests to fear all diseases in order for someone to sell some potion or vaccine, when, in fact, history shows that in industrialized countries, these diseases are benign and, according to natural health sources, beneficial to the body.

Having raised three children vaccine free and childhood disease free, I have experienced many times when my children's vaccinated peers succumb to the childhood diseases they were vaccinated against. Surprisingly, there were times when my unvaccinated children were blamed for their peers' sickness. Something which is just not possible when they didn't have the diseases at all.

The internet isn't taking this one lying down, of course; the Amazon reviews include requests for a Braille version for a child blinded by measles and a glowing review from someone who claims to "specialize in itty bitty coffins".

She had a child die early in life and her aunt told her that when she worked in a hospital, she saw lots of babies die the same way and the only thing they had in common was vaccines. That's the entirety of her research into how melon juice and not getting vaccinated makes you immune to the vicious but super fun to get disease measles.

Oklahoma does not have Trader Joe's yet (and probably won't until they change their arcane liquor laws) so I didn't have much exposure to them. I went to one in CA and MA and I wasn't super impressed. I wrote them off as hippy-dippy Whole Foods knock-off. Since moving to NC, I have changed my stance on TJs. Their food is fantastic and their staff is always so happy and cheerful and helpful. I actually look forward to shopping there. I still don't care for the over-priced Whole Foods, but maybe that will change someday.

Whole foods never impressed me because they don't really carry much that you can't get at a normal grocery store, yet they charge more for it. Trader Joe's has more unusual and fun things, and they're not overpriced. In fact, for a lot of things, they're cheaper than Kroger around here.

This is what I'm hearing too. We're finally getting a Trader Joe's here in Columbus, along with an IKEA nearby. It's official: Columbus, Ohio is officially a cheaper, more accessible Portland, Oregon.

And considering Ohio already has the Republican National Convention and might be getting the Democratic one as well, it might be an interesting an interesting election cycle.

It's nearly mid-february and we're finally getting a decent snow fall. Decent as in more than an inch. Hopefully we'll get the full 4 inches they were talking about. The cross-country ski trails haven't even been able to be groomed this year. It's been a boring and lazy winter.

I'm thinking if the snow sticks around till the weekend, it'll be a drop everything and go sledding day.

I watched a paramecium die yesterday. I added a PH 8 solution to a sample yesterday for lab. I watched it swim around, getting slower and slower until it stopped and exploded. Science is weird.

Well, at least now you should be able to see Thestrals unaided.

Hah.. my cat just tried to eat a dorito. He looked at me imploringly as I ate some, so I decided, "fine, I'll give him one and he can discover cats don't like tortilla chips."

He really really tried, you guys. Didn't just lick off the seasoning, he bit the chip, it fragmented, he tried to pick up the pieces off the desk but that's hard to do with just your tongue and kitty fangs. I held it up for him to try to bite some more, and I think eventually the whole thing just became too troublesome for him.

My wife wants us to go watch Fifty Shades of Gray on V-day. I said yes because I'm fairly confident I'll end up seeing some boobies.

It is impossible for me not to laugh at the commercial for this season of "The Following", it has a super dark serious cover of "One Way or Another" and I just can't stop laughing that it exists.
