Minor victory thread

I've gained weight, but that's not the victory. The victory is I don't hate myself. It's taken a while, but I'm not going to punish myself for having a hard time and getting temporarily lazy. But I'm not giving up either. Made myself a nice salad for lunch, I put together a new exercise playlist, and I'm looking forward to actually having a whole hour to exercise tomorrow. I have that extra time because Jake offered to cook dinner for us. It's kind of a relief that the self-scolding in my head is gone for a while.

I make a great oat crumble with sweet potato and butternut squash. It's like eating a side dish and dessert at the same time.

Just had what is probably the best meal I've had in my life. It was a tapas place in Milwaukee called La Merenda's. We started with goat cheese curds, thinly sliced potato skins cooked in white truffle oil, Morracan goat with potato, and rainbow trout pan seared with coconut curry over rice and red peppers. Next we moved on to shrimp escabeche with mango, lime, and diced veggies on tortillas, empanada's, and the bread and cheese platters.

For a more detailed list the ingredients can be found here. It was freaking amazing.

Oh, and desert. Sadly, they don't have a menu of the deserts, but good god they were good.

While everything was fantastic, I could have ordered two or three plates of the rainbow trout and been ecstatic. Simply the best thing I've ever had to eat.

Safelite estimated my windshield replacement at $320 in June. Today? $220 including disposal of old one and taxes. Appointment made for Wednesday morning. :)

The main thing I always hated about UPS was that I'm not here during the day, so I have to work from home if I want to receive any package I order (I am NOT set up for that at all). If I miss the notice they leave in my apartment building's lobby (which is quite possible what with people coming and going and the wind), then I have to go to the UPS Depot that is located not just on the other side of the city, but on the other side of the city NEXT to it. Completely inaccessible except by car, which I do not have.

Or at least, that was the way things were. They now have a UPS Access Point roughly five minutes from where I live. On foot. Score! :minionhappy:

I used to live about 2 miles from a UPS depot.
It was not the UPS facility for my area. That one was about a 9-mile drive away. I could send packages from the nearby one, but if I missed a package, there was a 30min drive + wait time in my future.
Missing a package was always an opportunity for a rantfest.

Finally got a call back from Chapters about a job. It wasn't the longest amount of time without work, well for me it was, but it was really starting to worry me.

When you do your Ph.D. you work primarily with one scientist (your mentor). To graduate, though, you have to form a committee--basically, choosing several scientists as "impartial observers" to your work and deciding whether you're ready to graduate. If they feel you're ready, you then write and have to defend your thesis--your original contribution to scientific knowledge that sums up your Ph.D. work.

I had a meeting with my committee this past Friday. To make a long story short: while I have a hefty amount of work to do in the next six or seven months, I may be able to defend my thesis (focusing on chronic stress and its impact on genetics/neuropsychiatric illness) and earn my Ph.D. within the next year.

I had a job interview yesterday for a teaching assistant position in an elementary school. I think it went well. Even if I don't get hired, I'm happy to have gone through the interview. I haven't had to do one in quite a long time.

Work is done on the car. New windshield and wiper blades. The scuff and crack are gone. The blades don't chatter all over the place (even in a steady rain the old ones would). Yay me.

After searching everywhere to no avail, because they've been sold out -everywhere-, I was finally able to find one of these for purchase.

I didn't get the TA job...

BUT! I was asked if I want to be a substitute. The director told me that since I don't have a background in education, it would get me some experience and they would be able to see how I work with the kids. I'm going for it. Though I'm not looking forward to my immunizations. Eeek.
