[Movies] Talk about the last movie you saw 2: Electric Threadaloo

I've never heard of this movie. Lets look it up on wikipiedia

LOL NOPE
Even Christian and Creationist based reviewers are panning it, saying it lives up to every stereotype about christian movies being bad. Main concerns I keep seeing is that all characters are two dimensional caricatures, with every christian being painted as a pure and good person, and every atheist a horrible person.

You're Next
I thought it was going to be much better than what I saw. I heard enough positive reviews that I really wanted to give it a try. It just came off as a very low budget slasher with some very cringe worthy dialogue. In fact the movie is advertised as a comedy, but it feels more like an unintentional comedy due to poor writing and poor acting.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World: Gets better every time I watch it.

However, something I noticed was how well shot the action scenes are, and I realized what a loss it is that Edgar Wright won't be directing Ant-Man. I knew it was a loss on a comedic front, but he really knows his action, and so we lose on that angle too. And that really sucks.

Yeah, Pilgrim is one thing but dear God the fight scenes in The World's End are just a cut above. It's such a sad thing he's off the movie.

Mirrors

I've had an idea for a book or maybe a couple of books that would be for a teen series. Without giving away too much, the premise involves mirrors. So I've been doing a little bit of research here and there on mirrors, old wives' tales about mirrors, the science of them, etc. Picked up a collection of Alice in Wonderland, where its sequel partly dwells on the idea, as well. Anyway, a scan of TV Tropes gave me a list of some media with mirrors related to the story. This was one of them.

Aaaaand...it was dull, not scary, and had terrible special effects. It had some good ideas, including a pretty tense scene with a mother trying to save her children near the end of the movie. But honestly, I was so bored of it, I fast forwarded through most of it. The ending was kind of clever, if weird, though.

This weekend I had some really mediocre movie viewing.

The History of Future Folk
I had never heard of Future Folk, and this movie is obviously meant to be a vehicle for introducing the public at large to this musical comedy duo. They're kind of like a really family friendly version of Tenacious D with the satanism replaced with alien stuff. It wasn't a bad movie, but it was no where near a good movie. It did have a bit of heart and seemed like a really earnest attempt at telling a good story. Lukewarm at best.

Alter Egos
This movie was a big old burp of cinema. Not much substance and tastes vaguely of something you ate in the past. Basically take all "superheroes have become mundane" movie or comic and throw them in a blender and you have this movie.

Did you see Skeleton Key?

I watched the new secret life of Walter Mitty again and I really still enjoyed it. I was a bit disappointed in its performance. Thought it would resonate more with the dreamers. And the photographers. The cinematography was just gorgeous.

Ben Stiller definitely showed he had the chops for both dramatic acting and directing I felt.

Lucy

Okay, first, let me just say I'm sort of morally obligated to see this movie, because it was filmed in Taiwan.

Secondly, yes, the premise is dumb and scientifically bullshit. No denying that. Also, you can't ever ignore the premise, because it's not one of those premises that are just mentioned and then forgotten. No, this is mentioned and discussed and used as a plot point through the whole movie. So you have to suspend your disbelief for it. Wasn't too hard for me, to be honest. I saw it much like genetic mutation giving people psychic powers. Or a school of magic being reachable through platform nine and three quarters. Or a portal in a wardrobe leading to Narnia.

The rest of the movie's fairly interesting, I think. It tries to raise some questions and themes that artsy philosophical types of people will have a field day with. ScarJo gives a competent performance, although admittedly most of the movie only calls for her to express robotic detachment. The visuals are nice, too, and Luc Besson is more than competent when it comes to direction action sequences.

On the other hand, though, Luc Besson likes to insert action sequences when they're really not justified. There's a car chase scene in the middle of the movie that's way too long and way too pointlessly destructive. Lucy's use of her powers are also incredibly inconsistent.

Finally, some lucky Taiwanese actor got paid to stick his hand down the front of ScarJo's shirt. Seriously.

Sin City 2

Even if it had a lot of Miller-esque trappings, I still enjoyed it. You pretty much have to know what you're walking into in order to enjoy it. I think anyone who enjoyed the first one - like myself - will enjoy it. It's not as good as the first one, but still pretty good.

It has some problems with it. The stories told aren't as diverse as the first one, for starters. In fact, two of them share the same villain. The titular story, A Dame to Kill For, is great if only for Eva Green, who puts in a great performance - most of it bare naked. The Long, Bad Night is also pretty good, if only because it's Jason Gordon Levitt, one of my favourite actors. The third story focusing on Jessica Alba's the weakest, if only because Alba is a terrible actress. It's still fun enough, I suppose.

The problem I had mostly is two things: two of the stories feature an assault on a mansion. At least in the first one, each of the stories had very different endings. Second, I think there's some big continuity issues with the new story. I'll spoiler it for anyone who didn't see the first one:

Shouldn't Marv have been dead by the time Nancy's story was told? How was he able to tag along with her to Roarke's mansion when, by that point, he should've been long dead, himself? This kind of bugs me because the other ones had a relatively good timeline continuity, even if they didn't follow a sequential timeline.

Unrelated to that, it's a shame they couldn't get Clive Owen to return as Dwight at the end, post-plastic surgery. It would've tied back in with The Long Hard Kill story in the first movie. That's a minor complaint, though.

Still, I dug it. I was in a noir kind of mood and this delivered. Even if the movie has problems story and acting-wise (much like the first), it's still absolutely gorgeous and still has some fantastic shots.

One of your favorite actors, but you don't know his name? :p

As for continuity:

The stories aren't told in order. Marv is still alive at the end of Nancy's story in the first one, as you can see him at the bar while Bruce Willis is there, so presumably her revenge sequel also takes place before Marv's story.
Heh, whoops. Just woke up.

They're not told in order but they've always had something of a good timeline continuity. The problem is a few things:
1) Part of the reason Marv was sent to the chair so quickly was because of the Senator that Nancy killed.
2) Nancy wasn't scarred and was still pretty upbeat when Marv brought Goldie's sister to her.

Eh, it's minor at best. It was absolute fun to see Mickey Roarke back in the role. It's clear he has a blast playing it. Just watching him move in such awkward ways because he's a big lug is always entertaining to watch.

The Loved Ones
I'm not really big on these torture - horror movies, but this was still in my "Recommended for You" list on Netflix. The premise of this was messed up and I like Robin McLeavy. When the film is all said and done those are still the two best things I can say about it.The premise is messed up, and it has Robin McLeavy.

I Know That Voice

Been waiting for this movie to become available for like two yeara.its finally on Netflix and I watched it last night. Honestly didn't really give me much new information; a lot of the stories I'd heard before on Rob Paulsen 's podcast. But it was of course still a joy to watch. Voice Actors seem to just be having the most fun of anyone on the planet.

Wreck it Ralph

Fun and definitely interesting for the adults as well as the kids. There are a lot of references they just won't get. The movie does a pretty good job of evoking emotion even when toeing the standard line on plot.

Watched Muppets: Most Wanted again (again), and yeah it isn't quite as good as the first of the new movies, but there's just something about the Muppet sense of humor that gets me every time.

I saw the new Ninja Turtle movie.

I didn't hate it.

It wasn't good, don't get me wrong, but I didn't hate it.
Just out of curiosity, what did they do with Karai and Baxter Stockman? I'd read they were both in the film, but with basically very little done with them.

I didn't even know there was a Baxter Stockman until the credits and Karai is just a Shredder goon that doesn't wear silly makeup. She is more or less this movie's Tatsu.

Sounds about right from what I've heard.

Honestly, based upon some of the descriptions of what Eric Sacks does and what his character is, it sounds like they could have just had Baxter Stockman as the villain and do that stuff.

Yes, yes they could have. It has some baffling choices.
